ز مرغ خانگی بازی برآشفت
بمرغ خانگی آنگه چنین گفت

که مردم داردت تیمارخانه
دمی نگذاردت بی آب و دانه

نگه می دارد از اعدات پیوست
که تابر تو نیابد دشمنی دست

تو پیوسته ز مردم می گریزی
چنین بد عهد از بهر چه چیزی

وفای تست مردم را همیشه
ترا جز بی وفائی نیست پیشه

نیامیزی تو با مردم زمانی
چو تو نشنیده ام نامهربانی

مرا باری اگر مردم بصد بار
ز پیش خویش بفرستد بصد کار

درآیم عهد ایشان را بپرواز
بزودی هم بر ایشان رسم باز

وفایی نیست مرغ خانگی را
که پیشه می کند بیگانگی را

چو مرغ خانگی بشنید این راز
جواب باز داد اندر زمان باز

که ای بی دانش بی قدر و مقدار
نه بینی باز کشته سر نگون سار

ولی صد مرغ بینی سر بریده
به پای آویخته سینه دریده

وفای آدمی گر این چنینست
ازان بیزار گشتم این یقینست

چنین عهد و وفا را در زمانه
چه بهتر، خاک بر سر جاودانه

چه گر این ساعتم می پرورد لیک
برای کشتنم می پرورد نیک

تو گر این را وفا دانی جفا به
بسی کفر از چنین مهر و وفا به

ز دیری گه ترا ای چرخ گردان
روانست آسیا برخون مردان

شگفتا کار تو ای چرخ ناساز
که در خاک افکنی پروردهٔ ناز

جهانا حاصل پروردن ما
چه خواهد بود جز خون خوردن ما

کس از خون خوردن تو نیست آگاه
که پنهان می کنی در خاک و در چاه

جهانا چون حیات تو مماتست
وفا ازتو طمع کردن وفاتست

جفات اول مرا در شور انداخت
وفات آخر مرا در گور انداخت

نمی دانم که تا این بی در وبام
برای چیست گردان بام تا شام

عجایب نامهٔ این هفت پرگار
مرا در خون بگردانید صد بار

ز سر تا پای رفتم هر زمان من
نمی دانم سراپای جهان من

چو گوئی بی سر و بی پای ازانم
که سر از پای و پای از سر ندانم

چو جان اینجا نفس از خود نهان زد
چگونه لاف دانش می توان زد

English translation

A falcon became angry with a domestic fowl, And thus spoke to the domestic fowl: 'Humans provide you with a sheltered home, And never leave you for a moment without water and grain. They protect you from your enemies constantly, So that no foe may gain hand over you. You constantly flee from humans; For what reason are you so untrue to your covenant? Is this your loyalty to humans always, When you practice nothing but faithlessness? You do not mingle with humans even for a moment; I have never heard of any creature so unkind. As for me, even if humans a hundred times Send me away from them for a hundred tasks, I fly up in fulfillment of my covenant with them, And swiftly return to them once more. There is no loyalty in the domestic fowl, Who practices nothing but estrangement.' When the domestic fowl heard this secret, It immediately gave an answer to the falcon: 'O you who are devoid of knowledge, value, or worth! Do you not see the falcon slaughtered and hung upside down? Yet you see a hundred fowl with their heads cut off, Hung by their feet, their breasts torn open! If the loyalty of humans is of this sort, Then I have turned away from it, that is for certain. For such covenants and loyalty in this world, What could be better than casting dust upon one's head forever? Though they feed and nurture me at this hour, yet They nurture me well only to slaughter me! If you consider this to be loyalty, then cruelty is better; Infidelity is far better than such affection and loyalty. For a long time, O turning wheel of heaven, Your mill has been running on the blood of men. How wondrous is your work, O discordant wheel, That you cast into the dust those nurtured in luxury! O world, what will be the outcome of our nurturing Except the drinking of our blood? No one is aware of your blood-drinking, Because you hide it in the dust and in the well. O world, since your life is death, Expecting loyalty from you is demise itself. Your cruelty first threw me into turmoil; Your loyalty in the end threw me into the grave. I do not know why this roofless and doorless structure Turns from morning till night. The wondrous book of these seven compasses Has turned me in blood a hundred times. From head to toe I went every moment, Yet I do not know the head or toe of my world. Since you say I am headless and feetless, I do not know my head from my feet, nor my feet from my head. When the soul here has drawn its breath in secret, How can anyone boast of knowledge?'
