آن پاک باز ولایت آن شاه باز هدایت آن سالک بادیه تجرید آن سابق راه تفرید آن برکندهٔ بیخ خودی شیخ عبدالله تروغبدی رحمةالله علیه یگانه عهد بود و نشانهٔ وقت بود و از جمله مشایخ طوس و از کبار اصحاب و در ورع و تجرید کامل بود و او را کرامات و ریاضات شگرف است صحبت بوعثمان حیری یافته بود و بسی مشایخ دیده و ابتداء حال او چنان بود که در طوس قحطی افتادکه آدمی می خوردند و یک روز بخانه درآمد مگر دومن گندم یافت د رخمره آتش درو افتاد و گفت: این شفقت بود بر مسلمانان که ایشان از گرسنگی می میرند و تو گندم در خمره نهادهٔ شوری بدو درآمدی روی به صحرا نهاد و ریاضت و مجاهده پیش گرفت.
یک بار باصحاب خویش به سفره نشسته بود بنان خوردن منصور حلاج از کشمیر می آمد قبائی سیاه پوشیده و دو سگ سیاه در دست شیخ اصحاب را گفت: جوانی بدن صفت می آید و باستقبال می باید رفت که کار او عظیم است اصحاب برفتند و او را دیدندی می آمد و دو سگ سیاه بر دست هم چنان روی به شیخ نهاد شیخ چون او را بدید جای خویش بدوداد تا درآمد و سگان را با خوددر سفره نشاند چون اصحاب دیدند که استقبال او فرمود و جای خویش بدو داد هیچ نتوانستند گفتن شیخ نظارهٔ او می کرد تا اونان می خورد و به سگا ن می داد و اصحاب انکار می کردند پس چون نان بخورد و برفت شیخ بوداع او برخاست چون باز گردید اصحاب گفتند شیخا این چه حالت بود که سگ را بر جای بنشانیدی و ما را باستقبال چنین کسی فرستادی که جمله سفره از نماز ببرد شیخ گفت: این سگ نفس او بود از پی او می دوید از بیرون مانده و سگ مادر درون مانده است و ما از پی او می دویم پس فرق بود از کسی که متابع سگ بود تا کسی که سگ متابع وی بود سگ او ظاهر می توانست دیدن و بر شما پوشیده است این بتر از آن هزار بار پس گفت: این ساعت در آفرینش پادشاه او خواهد بود اگر سگ دارد و اگر ندارد کار روی بدوخواهد داشت.

نقلست که ازو پرسیدند که صفت مرید چیست گفت: مرید در رنج است ولکن آن سرور طلب است نه عنا وتعب.
و ازو پرسیدند از صوفی و زاهد گفت: صوفی به خداوند و زاهد به نفس.

و گفت: حق تعالی هر بنده را از معرفت خویش به قدر کاری بخشیده است تا معرفت او یاری دهندهٔ او بود بر بلا.
و گفت: آلات مکشوف است ومعانی مستور.

و گفت: هرکه خدمت کند در جمله عمر خویش یک روز جوانمردی را برکت یک روزه خدمت باو رسد پس حال کسی چگونه بود که جملهٔ عمر در خدمت ایشان صرف کند.
و گفت: هیچ انس نیست در اجتماع برادران به سبب وحشت فراق و هیچ کس را وسیلتی نبود به خدای جز خدای وسیلت نیست.

و گفت: هر که دنیا را ترک کند از برای دنیا از غایت حب دنیا بود، رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

That sincere devotee of the domain of sainthood, that royal falcon of guidance, that traveler of the desert of detachment, that forerunner of the path of isolation, that uprooter of the root of selfhood, Sheikh Abdullah Taroghbadi, may God have mercy upon him, was unique in his era and a sign of his time. He was among the sheikhs of Tus and one of the great companions, perfect in piety and detachment, and possessed wondrous miracles and spiritual struggles. He had associated with Abu Uthman al-Hiri and seen many sheikhs. The beginning of his state was such that a famine occurred in Tus, so severe that people ate humans. One day he came home and found only two maunds of wheat in a jar. A fire fell upon him and he said: 'Is this compassion for Muslims, that they are dying of hunger while you have stored wheat in a jar?' A frenzy came upon him; he headed for the wilderness and took up spiritual training and striving.

Once, he was sitting at the table with his companions eating bread. Mansur al-Hallaj was coming from Kashmir, wearing a black robe and holding two black dogs in his hand. The Sheikh said to his companions: 'A youth with such a description is coming, and you must go to welcome him, for his state is great.' The companions went and saw him coming, holding two black dogs, heading towards the Sheikh. When the Sheikh saw him, he gave him his own place. He entered and sat the dogs with himself at the table. When the companions saw that he had ordered him to be welcomed and gave him his own place, they could say nothing. The Sheikh watched him as he ate bread and fed it to the dogs, and the companions disapproved. Then, when he finished eating and left, the Sheikh stood up to bid him farewell. When he returned, the companions said: 'O Sheikh! What state was this, that you sat a dog in your place and sent us to welcome such a person, who rendered the entire table impure for prayer?' The Sheikh said: 'That dog was his carnal soul (nafs); it was running after him, kept on the outside, whereas our dog is kept on the inside, and we run after it. So there is a difference between one who is followed by the dog, and one who follows the dog. His dog could be seen outwardly, but yours is hidden, which is a thousand times worse.' Then he said: 'At this hour, he will be the king in all creation; whether he has a dog or not, things will turn towards him.'

It is related that he was asked, 'What is the attribute of a disciple (murid)?' He said, 'The disciple is in pain, but that is the joy of seeking, not suffering and distress.' And they asked him about the Sufi and the ascetic. He said, 'The Sufi is occupied with God, and the ascetic with the self.' And he said, 'God Almighty has granted every servant a portion of His gnosis according to their capacity, so that their gnosis may assist them during trials.' And he said, 'The instruments are revealed, and the meanings are concealed.' And he said, 'Whoever serves a chivalrous man (javanmard) for a single day in their entire life, the blessing of that single day's service will reach them; so what would be the state of one who spends their entire life in their service?' And he said, 'There is no intimacy in the gathering of brothers because of the dread of separation, and no one has any means to God, for God is the only means.' And he said, 'Whoever renounces the world for the sake of the world does so out of the utmost love of the world, may God have mercy upon him.'
