English translation

That Qiblah of the God-fearing, that exemplar of the pure, that bird caught in the snare of the foremost, that true dawn in the evening of Syria, that one who passed away from self and remained in God, the devout Ibrahim ibn Dawud Raqqi, may Allah have mercy upon him, was among the greatest of the scholars and sheikhs, and of the elders of the groups, respected and a possessor of miracles and high discourses. He was among the great figures of Syria, a contemporary of Junayd and Ibn Jalla, and lived a long life. It is related that a dervish was walking in a valley when a lion approached him. When the lion looked at the dervish, it roared, laid its face on the dust, and departed. The dervish looked at his clothes and saw that a patch from the garment of Sheikh Raqqi was sewn onto his cloak; he knew that the lion showed respect to that. And he said: 'Gnosis is the affirmation of the Truth, beyond whatever the imagination can reach.' And he said: 'Power is manifest and eyes are open, but vision is weak.' And he said: 'The sign of loving the Truth is choosing obedience to Him and following His Messenger, peace be upon him.' And he said: 'The weakest of creation is he who is unable to restrain his desires, and the strongest is he who is capable of abandoning them.' And he said: 'The value of every person is according to the measure of their aspiration; if their aspiration is this world, they have no value, and if it is the pleasure of God, it is impossible to find the ultimate limit of their value or to comprehend it.' And he said: 'The content one is he who does not ask, and insisting in supplication is not among the conditions of contentment (rida).' And he said: 'Trust (tawakkul) is finding peace in that which God Almighty has guaranteed.' And he said: 'What is sufficient reaches you without trouble, but your preoccupation and trouble lie in seeking excess.' And he said: 'The sufficiency of the poor is trust, and the sufficiency of the rich is reliance on possessions and means.' And he said: 'The discipline of the poor is that they come from reality (haqiqat) to knowledge (ilm).' And he said: 'As long as there is a thought of the universe's affairs in your heart, know for certain that you have no worth in the sight of God Almighty.' And he said: 'Whoever becomes honorable by something other than God Almighty, the truth is that he is humiliated in his honor.' And he said: 'Two things of this world are sufficient for you: first, the companionship of the poor, and second, the respect for the saint.' And Allah knows best and is the Wisest.
