آن واعظ اقران، آن حافظ اخوان، آن زاهد متمکن، آن عابد متدین، آن قطب افلاک، محمدبن سماک رحمةالله علیه، درهمه وقت امام بود و مقبول انام بود. کلامی عالی و بیانی شافی داشت، و در موعظت آیتی بود و معروف کرخی را گشایش از سخن او بود. و هارون الرشید او را چنان محترم داشت و تواضع کرد که گفت: ای امیرالمومنین! تواضع تو در شرف شریفتر است. بسیاری از شرف تو.
و گفت: شریفترین تواضع آن است که خویشتن رابرهیچ کس فضل نبینی.

و گفت: پیش از این مردمان دوایی بودند که از ایشان شفا می یافتند، اکنون همه دردی شده اند که آن را دوا نیست. پس طریق آن است که خدای را مونس خود سازی و کتاب او را همراز خود گردانی.
و گفت: طمع رسنی است در گردن و بندی برپای. بینداز تا برهی.

و گفت: تا اکنون موعظت بر واعظان گران آمدی چنان عمل برعاملان واعظان اندک بودندی چنانکه امروز عاملان اندک اند.
احمد حواری گفت: این سماک بیمار شد، تا آب او حاصل کردیم تا نزد طبیب بریم، نصرانئی که دروقت او بود. در راه که می رفتیم مردی را دیدیم نیکوروی و خوش بوی و پاکیزه و جامه پاک پوشیده. پیش ما بازآمد و گفت: کجا می روید؟

گفتم: به فلان طبیب ترسا خواهیم که سماک را تجربت کند و آب می بریم تا بر وی عرضه کنیم.
گفت: سبحان الله! دوست خدای از دشمن خدای استعانت می جوید؟ و به نزدیک وی می رود؟ بازگردید و به نزدیک ابن سماک روید و بگویید تا دست بر آن علت نهد و برخواند اعوذبالله من الشیطان الرجیم و بالحق انزلناه نزل الآیة.

مابازگشتیم و حال بدو نمودیم. او چنان کرد که فرموده بود در حال شفا یافت، و گفت: بدانید که او خضر بود، علیه السلام.
نقل است که چون وقت وفاتش آمد می گفت: بارخدایا! دانی که درآن وقت که معصیت می کردم اهل طاعت، تور ا دوست می داشتم. این کفارت آن گردان.

نقل است که او عزب بود. او را گفتند: کدخدایی خواهی؟ گفت: نی. گفتند: چرا؟
گفت: از بهر آنکه با من شیطانی است. یکی دیگر درآید و مرا طاقت آن نباشد که دو شیطان در یکی خانهمن باشند گفتند چگونه ؟

گفت هر یکی از ما را شیطانی است یکی مرا و یکی اورا دو شیطان در یک خانه چگونه بود.
بعد از آن وفات کرد. او را به خواب دیدند. گفتند: خدای با تو چه کرد؟

گفت: همه نواخت و خلعت و کرامت و اکرام بود، ولکن آنجا هیچ کس را آبروی نیست الا کسانی را که ایشان بار عیال کشیده اند و تن در رنج دبه و زنبیل داده اند رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

That preacher of peers, that keeper of brothers, that established ascetic, that devout worshiper, that pole of the heavens, Muhammad bin Sammak, may Allah have mercy on him, was a leader at all times and accepted by all people. He had sublime speech and healing eloquence, and was a sign in preaching, and Ma'ruf al-Karkhi found opening through his words. And Harun al-Rashid held him in such respect and humbled himself before him that he said: 'O Commander of the Faithful! Your humility in your noble status is nobler than much of your noble status.' And he said: 'The noblest humility is that you do not see yourself as superior to anyone.' And he said: 'Before this, people were a medicine through whom healing was found; now they have all become a pain for which there is no medicine. Thus, the way is to make God your companion and His book your confidant.' And he said: 'Greed is a rope around the neck and a shackle on the feet. Cast it off so that you may be freed.' And he said: 'Until now, preaching was heavy upon the preachers just as action was upon the doers; preachers were few, just as today doers are few.' Ahmad Hawari said: Ibn Sammak fell ill, so we collected his urine to take to a physician, a Christian who lived in his time. On the way, we saw a man of beautiful face, sweet fragrance, clean appearance, and wearing clean clothes. He approached us and said: 'Where are you going?' I said: 'We want a certain Christian physician to examine Sammak, and we are carrying urine to present to him.' He said: 'Glory be to God! Does a friend of God seek help from an enemy of God and go to him? Go back, go to Ibn Sammak, and tell him to place his hand on that affliction and recite: I seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast, and: With truth We have sent it down, and with truth it has descended (the verse).' We returned and showed him the situation. He did as he was told, and was instantly healed, and said: 'Know that he was Khidr, peace be upon him.' It is related that when the time of his death came, he was saying: 'O Lord! You know that at the time I was committing sin, I loved the people of obedience to You. Make this the expiation for that.' It is related that he was a bachelor. They said to him: 'Do you want to marry?' He said: 'No.' They said: 'Why?' He said: 'Because there is a devil with me. Another one will enter, and I do not have the strength to have two devils in my house.' They said: 'How so?' He said: 'Each of us has a devil—one for me, and one for her. How could two devils be in one house?' After that, he passed away. He was seen in a dream. They said: 'What did God do with you?' He said: 'It was all kindness, robes of honor, bounty, and respect; however, no one has honor there except those who have borne the burden of a family and subjected themselves to the labor of the leather bag and basket, may Allah have mercy on him.'
