آن سفینه بحر دیانت آن سکینه اهل متانت آن بدرقه مقامات آن آینهٔ کرامات آن آفتاب فلک رضا ابوعبدالله بن الجلا رحمة الله علیه از مشایخ کبار شام بود و محمود و مقبول این طایفه بود و مخصوص به کلمات رفیع و اشارات بدیع ودر حقایق و معارف و دقایق و لطایف بی نظیر بود ابوتراب و ذوالنون مصری را دیده بود و با جنید و نوری صحبت داشته بود ابوعمر و دمشقی گفت: ازو شنیدم که گفت: در ابتدا مادر و پدر را گفتم مرا در کار خدای کنید گفتند کردیم پس از پیش ایشان برفتم مدتی چون بازآمدم بدرخانه رفتم و در بزدم پدرم گفت: کیستی گفتم فرزند تو گفت: مرا فرزندی بود به خدای بخشیدم و آنچه بخشیده بازنستانم در به من نگشاد.
و گفت: روزی جوانی دیدم ترسا صاحب جمال در مشاهده او متحیر شدم و در مقابله او بایستادم جنید می گذشت گفتم یا استاد این چنین روئی به آتش دوزخ بخواهند سوخت گفت: این بازارچه نفس است ودام شیطان که ترا برین می دارد نه نظاره عبرت که اگر نظر عبرت بودی در هژده هزار عالم اعجوبه موجود است اما زود باشد که تو بدین بی حرمتی و نظر دروی معذب شوی گفت: چون جنید برفت مرا قرآن فراموش شد تا سالها استغائت خواستم از حق تعالی وزاری و توبه کردم تا حق تعالی به فضل خویش قرآن باز عطا کرد اکنون چندگاه است که زهره ندارم که بهیچ چیز از موجودات التفات کنم تا وقت خود را به نظر کردن در اشیاء ضایع گردانم.

نقلست که سئوال کردند از فقر خاموش شد پس بیرون رفت و بازآمد گفتند چه حال بود گفت: چهار دانگ سیم داشتم شرمم آمد که در فقر سخن گویم آن را صدقه کردم.
و گفت: به مدینه رسیدم رنجدیده و فاقه کشیده تا به نزدیک تربت مصطفی صلی الله علیه و علی آله و سلم رسیدم گفتم یا رسول الله به مهمان تو آمدم پس در خواب شدم پیغمبر را دیدم علیه السلام که گردهٔ به من داد نیمه بخوردم چون بیدار شدم نیمه دیگر در دست من بود.

پرسیدند که مردکی مستحق اسم فقر گردد گفت: آنگاه که از او هیچ باقی نماند.
گفتند چگونه تائب گردد گفت: آنگاه که فریشته دست چپ بیست روز بر وی هیچ ننویسد.

و گفت: هر که مدح وذم پیش او یکسان باشد او زاهد بود و هر که بر فرایض قیام نماید باول وقت عابد بود و هر که افعال همه از خدای بیند موحد بود.
و گفت: همت عارف حق باشد و ازحق بهیچ چیز بازنگردد.

و گفت: زاهد آن بود که به دنیا بچشم زوال نگرد تا در چشم او حقیر شود تا دل به آسانی ازوی بر تواند داشت.
و گفت: هر که تقوی باوی صحبت نکند در درویشی حرام محض خورد.

و گفت: صوفی فقیری است مجرد از اسباب.
و گفت: اگر نه شرف تواضع استی حکم فقیر آنستی که بزودی میلنجیدی.

و گفت: تقوی شکر معرفت است و تواضع شکر عزو صبر شکر هر که مصیبت.
و گفت: خایف آن بود که از غمها او را ایمن کنند.

و گفت: هر که به نفس به مرتبه رسد زود از آنجا بیفتد و هر که را برسانند به مرتبه بر آن مقام ثابت تواند بود.
و گفت: هر حق که با او باطلی شریک تواند بود از قسم حق به قسم باطل آمد به جهت آنکه حق غیور است.

و گفت: قصد کردن تو برزق تو را از حق دور کند و محتاج خلق گرداند.
و نقلست که چون وفاتش نزدیک آمد می خندید و چون بمرد همچنان می خندید گفتند مگر زنده است چون نگاه کردند مرده بود رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

That ship of the sea of piety, that tranquility of the people of fortitude, that escort of the stations, that mirror of miracles, that sun of the sphere of satisfaction, Abu Abdullah bin al-Jalla, may God have mercy on him, was among the great sheikhs of Damascus. He was praised and accepted by this group and distinguished by lofty words and original signs, and was peerless in truths, gnostic knowledge, subtleties, and graces. He had seen Abu Turab and Dhul-Nun al-Misri and had kept company with Junayd and Nuri. Abu Amr ad-Dimashqi said: I heard from him that he said: In the beginning I told my mother and father, 'Commit me to the work of God.' They said, 'We did.' So I left them for a time. When I returned, I went to the door of the house and knocked. My father said, 'Who are you?' I said, 'Your son.' He said, 'I had a son whom I gave to God, and what I have given I do not take back.' He did not open the door to me. And he said: One day I saw a beautiful Christian youth. I was bewildered by the sight of him and stood before him. Junayd was passing by. I said, 'O Master, will they burn such a face in the fire of Hell?' He said, 'This is the marketplace of the soul and the snare of Satan that urges you toward this, not a gaze of admonition. For if it were a gaze of admonition, there are wonders in eighteen thousand worlds. But soon you will be punished for this irreverence and gaze.' He said: When Junayd left, I forgot the Quran. For years I sought help from God the Almighty and lamented and repented until God the Almighty, by His grace, granted the Quran back. Now for some time I have not had the courage to pay attention to any existing thing lest I waste my time looking at objects. It is related that he was asked about poverty. He remained silent, then went out and came back. They said, 'What happened?' He said, 'I had four silver coins; I was ashamed to speak of poverty while having them, so I gave them as alms.' And he said: I arrived in Medina, suffering and hungry, until I reached the tomb of Mustafa, peace and blessings be upon him and his family. I said, 'O Messenger of God, I have come as your guest.' Then I fell asleep. I saw the Prophet, peace be upon him, who gave me a loaf of bread. I ate half. When I woke up, the other half was in my hand. They asked: When does a man deserve the name of poverty? He said: When nothing remains of him. They said: How does one become a repenter? He said: When the angel of the left hand writes nothing against him for twenty days. And he said: Whoever regards praise and blame as equal is an ascetic. Whoever performs the obligatory duties at their first time is a worshiper. Whoever sees all actions as coming from God is a monotheist. And he said: The aspiration of the gnostic is Truth, and he does not turn from Truth to anything else. And he said: The ascetic is one who looks at the world with the eye of its passing so that it becomes small in his eyes and his heart can easily let go of it. And he said: Whoever does not have piety as a companion eats what is purely forbidden in his poverty. And he said: A Sufi is a poor person stripped of means. And he said: Were it not for the honor of humility, the state of the poor would be quickly inclined toward arrogance. And he said: Piety is the gratitude for gnosis, humility is the gratitude for glory, and patience is the gratitude for every misfortune. And he said: The fearful one is he who is made safe from sorrows. And he said: Whoever reaches a rank by their own soul will quickly fall from it, but whoever is brought to a rank can remain firm in that station. And he said: Every truth with which a falsehood can be shared passes from the category of truth to the category of falsehood, because Truth is jealous. And he said: Your striving for your provision distances you from Truth and makes you dependent on creation. And it is related that when his death approached, he was laughing, and when he died, he was still laughing. They said, 'Is he alive?' When they looked, he was dead, may God have mercy on him.
