English translation

That pillar of the saints, that elite of the chosen, that accepted one in trust, that designated one for miracle-working, that hidden Sheikh, Abu Ali Juzjani, may God have mercy on him, was among the great masters and the chivalrous of the path. He was perfect in spiritual struggle, and he has authored works in transactions that are reliable and famous, and words that are accepted and mentioned. He was a disciple of Hakim Tirmidhi. It is his saying that: The resting place of creation is the field of heedlessness; their reliance is on suspicion and accusation; and in their view, it is as if their deeds are based on truth and their words on secrets and revelations. And he said: Three things are from the bond of monotheism: fear, hope, and love. An increase in fear is from abandoning sin due to seeing the threat. An increase in hope is from righteous action due to seeing the promise. And an increase in love is from the abundance of remembrance due to seeing the favor. Thus, the fearful never rests from fleeing, the hopeful never rests from seeking, and the lover never rests from the joy of remembering the beloved. So fear is a luminous fire, hope is a luminous light, and love is the Light of Lights. And he said: Among the signs of happiness is that obedience is easy for the servant to perform, and following the Sunnah in actions is not difficult for him; and he is a lover of the people of righteousness, and is good-tempered with brothers, and can give something for the sake of people, and can rise to the service of Muslims, and can observe his own times. And he said: Unfortunate is the one who manifests sins that have been made forgotten to him. And he said: The saint is the one who is annihilated from his own state and remains in the witnessing of Truth; and God Almighty is the guardian of his actions, and he has no choice for himself, and has no rest with anyone other than Him. And he said: The gnostic is the one who has given his whole heart to the Master and his body to the creation. And he said: To have a good opinion of God is the ultimate knowledge of the Truth, and to have a bad opinion of the self is the origin of knowledge of the self. And he said: Whoever perseveres at the threshold of the Master, what is there after perseverance except the opening of the door? And whoever is patient for God, what is there after patience except arrival at the Truth? And he said: Be a person of steadfastness, not a person of miracle-working; for your soul seeks miracles, and God seeks steadfastness. And he said: Contentment is the palace of servitude, and patience is within it, and entrustment is its house, and death is at the door, and leisure is in the palace, and rest is in the house. And he said: Stinginess is three letters: the 'ba' is affliction, the 'ha' is loss, and the 'lam' is blame. So stinginess is an affliction upon one's own soul, a loss in one's hypocrisy, and a blame in one's stinginess, may God have mercy on him.
