English translation

That heaven of worship, that sun of prosperity, that spring of contentment, that point of loyalty, that divine shaykh, Shaykh Abu Bakr al-Saydalani, may Allah have mercy on him, was among the prominent and eminent shaykhs, and possessed a beauty such that he had no equal in his era. He was unique in state, in transactions, in piety and devotion, and in spiritual contemplation. He was from Fars and passed away in Nishapur, and al-Shibli held him in great esteem. It is his saying: 'In the entire world there is but one wisdom, and everyone has a share of that wisdom according to the degree of their spiritual unveiling.'

And he said: 'Associate with God, Almighty and Majestic, and if you cannot, associate with someone who associates with God, so that by the blessing of their association, they may bring you to God and there may be salvation for you in both worlds.'

And he said: 'Whoever associates with knowledge, has no choice but to contemplate the commandments and prohibitions.'

And he said: 'Knowledge severs you from ignorance; therefore, strive that it does not sever you from God, the Exalted.'

And he said: 'Union is without separation; for when separation comes, union no longer remains.'

And he said: 'Whoever guards truthfulness between himself and God, his truthfulness will keep him too occupied to have leisure for people.'

And he said: 'The paths are as numerous as the breaths of creation.' And he said: 'The path of God is straight, and there are not two paths to Him.'

And he said: 'Sit much in the company of God, and little in the company of creation.'

And he said: 'The best of creation are those people who do not see goodness in other than Him, and know that the paths to God are many, apart from the path that is specific to this person; yet it must be that one knows the shortcoming of one's self in whatever state one is in.'

And he said: 'It must be that the movements and stillness of a man are for God, or out of a necessity in which he is compelled; and any movement or stillness other than what we have mentioned is nothing.'

And he said: 'The wise person is one who speaks according to need, and refrains from whatever is in excess.'

And he said: 'Whoever does not possess silence and restraint is engaged in futility, even if they are still.'

And he said: 'The sign of the disciple is that they feel aversion toward what is not of their own kind, and seek after their own kind.'

And he said: 'There is no life except in the death of the self, and the life of the heart lies in the death of the self.'

And he said: 'It is impossible to emerge from the self by means of the self, but emerging from the self is possible through God, and that cannot be realized except through the sincerity of devotion to God.'

And he said: 'There is no greater blessing than emerging from the self, for the greatest veil between you and God is the self; thus, reality is nothing but the death of the self.'

And he said: 'Death is a gate among the gates of the Hereafter, and no servant can reach God unless they enter through that threshold.'

And he said: 'What can I do when all of creation is my enemy?'

And he said: 'Be sure not to be deceived by deception, for it may well be.'

Someone said: 'Give me a counsel.' He said: 'Aspiration, aspiration! For aspiration precedes all things, the pivot of all things is upon it, and the return of all things is to it.'

When the Shaykh passed away, his companions said: 'We set up a tombstone over his grave and wrote his name on it. Each time, someone would come, destroy it, make it disappear, and carry the tombstone away, and no one else was destroying it.' They asked Master Abu Ali al-Daqqaq about the secret behind this. He said: 'That elder had chosen obscurity for himself in this world, and you wish to make him known. God, the Exalted, keeps him hidden. And Allah knows best.'
