آن شریف اقران آن لطیف اخوان آن متمکن طریقت آن متوکل حقیقت آن کعبه مسلمانی ابوحمزهٔ خراسانی رحمةالله علیه از جملهٔ مشایخ بود و از اکابر طریقت و رفیع القدر و عالی همت بود و در فراست همتا نداشت و در توکل بی نهایت رسیده بود و در تجرید به غایت کشیده و ریاضات و کرامات او بسیار است و مناقب او بی شمار خلوات شایسته داشت بوتراب و جنید یافته بود.
نقل است که یکبار که به توکل در بادیه شد و نذر کرد که از هیچ کس هیچ چیز نخواهد به کسی التفات نکند و برین نذر بسر برد بی دلو و رسن متوکل وار مجرد برفت پاره سیم در جیب داشت که خواهرش بدوداده بودناگاه توکل داد خود طلبید گفت: که شرم نداری آنکه سقف آسمان بی ستون نگاهدارد معدهٔ ترا بی سیم پوشیده نگاه ندارد پس آن سیم بیانداخت ومی رفت ناگاه در چاهی افتاد ساعتی برآمد نفس فریاد برآورد بوحمزه خاموش بنشست یکی می گذشت سر چاه بازدید خاشاکی چند بیاورد که سر چاه بگیرد نفس بوحمزه زاری آغاز کرد و گفت: حق تعالی می فرماید ولاتلقوا بایدیکم الی التهلکه بوحمزه گفت: توکل از آن قویتر است که بعجز وسالوس نفس باطل شود تن زد تا آنکس سر چاه استوار کرد گفت: آنکس که بر بالا نگاه می دارد اینجا هم نگاهدارد روی به قبله توکل آورد سر فرو برد و اضطرار به کمال رسید و توکل بر قرار بود ناگاه شیری بیامد و سر چاه باز کرد و دست بر لب چاه زد و هر دو پای فرو گذاشت بوحمزه گفت: من همراهی گربه نکنم الهامش دادند که خلاف عادت است دست در زن دست در پای او زد و برآمد شیری دید بر صورتی که هرگز از آن صعب تر ندیده بود آوازی شنید که یا ابوحمزه الیس هذا احسن نجیناک من التلف بالتلف چون توکل بر ما کردی ما ترا بردست کسی که هلاکت جان ازو بود نجات دادیم پس شیر روی در زمین مالید و برفت.

نقل است که روزی جنید می رفت ابلیس رادید برهنه که بر گردن مردم می جست گفت: ای ملعون شرم نداری ازین مردمان گفت: کدام مردمان اینها نه مردمان اند مردمان آنهااند که در شونیزیه اند که جگرم را سوختند جنید گفت: برخاستم و به مسجد شونیزیه رفتم بوحمزه رادیدم سر فرو برده سر برآورد و گفت: دروغ گفت: آن ملعون که اولیاءخدای از آن عزیزترند که ابلیس را بر ایشان اطلاع باشد.
نقل است که اومحرم بودی به میان گلیمی در سالی یکبار بیرون آمدی از احرام.

پرسیدند از انس گفت: انس آنست که دلتنگی پدید آرد از نشستن با خلق.
و گفت: غریب آنست که او را از اقربا و پیوستگان خویش وحشت بود با ایشان بیگانه باشد.

و گفت: هر کرا وحشت بود از نفس خویش انس گرفته است دل او در موافقت خداوند خویش سبحانه و تعالی.
و گفت: هر که دوستی مرگ در دل او جای گیرد هر چه باقی است بروی دوست کنند و هرچه فانی است بر وی دشمن گردانند.

و گفت: توکل آنست که بامداد برخیزد از شبش یاد نیاید و چون شب درآید از بامداد یادش نیاید.
یکی وصیت خواست گفت: توشه بسیار ساز این سفر را که در پیش داری.

وفاتش در نیشابور بود و در جوار ابوحفص حداد دفن کردند، رحمهما الله تعالی و تقدس.

English translation

He who was the noble of his peers, the gentle of his brothers, the established in the spiritual path, the reliant in truth, the Kaaba of Islam, Abu Hamza al-Khorasani, may God's mercy be upon him, was among the shaykhs, and of the grandees of the path, and was of high stature and lofty ambition. He had no equal in foresight, and in reliance (tawakkul) he had reached the infinite, and in detachment (tajrid) he had reached the extreme. His spiritual disciplines and miracles are many, and his virtues are countless. He had worthy retreats, and he had met Abu Turab and Junayd.

It is related that once he went into the wilderness relying on God, and made a vow that he would ask nothing from anyone and pay no attention to anyone, and he went on this vow without a bucket or a rope, detached like a reliant one. He had a piece of silver in his pocket that his sister had given him. Suddenly, the demand of reliance came upon him, saying: 'Are you not ashamed that He who holds the ceiling of heaven without pillars does not keep your stomach covered without silver?' So he threw away that silver and went on. Suddenly, he fell into a well. After a while, his carnal self (nafs) began to cry out. Abu Hamza sat in silence. Someone was passing by, looked at the head of the well, and brought some brushwood to cover the well. Abu Hamza's carnal self began to lament and said: 'God Almighty says: And do not throw yourselves with your own hands into destruction.' Abu Hamza said: 'Reliance is stronger than to be invalidated by the weakness and deceit of the carnal self.' He remained silent until that person secured the head of the well and said: 'He who watches over from above, watches over here as well.' He turned to the qiblah of reliance and bowed his head, and distress reached its peak, yet reliance remained stable. Suddenly a lion came, opened the head of the well, put its paws on the edge of the well, and let down both its legs. Abu Hamza said: 'I will not accompany a cat.' He was inspired: 'This is contrary to custom. Put your hand in.' He put his hand on its leg and came out. He saw a lion of such a form that he had never seen anything more terrible. He heard a voice: 'O Abu Hamza! Is this not better? We saved you from destruction by means of destruction. Since you relied on Us, We saved you at the hand of that which would have been the destruction of your life.' Then the lion rubbed its face on the ground and departed.

It is related that one day Junayd was walking and saw Satan naked, leaping onto people's necks. He said: 'O accursed one! Are you not ashamed of these people?' He said: 'Which people? These are not people. The people are those who are in the Shuniiziyyah, who have burnt my liver.' Junayd said: 'I got up and went to the Shuniiziyyah mosque. I saw Abu Hamza, who had bowed his head. He raised his head and said: 'That accursed one lied, for the friends of God are too precious for Satan to have awareness of them.''

It is related that he would enter the state of pilgrim consecration (ihram) wrapped in a blanket, and once a year he would emerge from ihram.

They asked him about intimacy (uns). He said: 'Intimacy is that which produces distress from sitting with people.'

And he said: 'The stranger is he who has aversion to his relatives and associates, and is a stranger to them.'

And he said: 'Whoever has aversion to his own carnal self has found intimacy; his heart is in agreement with his Lord, glorified and exalted is He.'

And he said: 'Whoever has the love of death reside in his heart, whatever is eternal is made beloved to him, and whatever is transitory is made an enemy to him.'

And he said: 'Reliance (tawakkul) is that when he rises in the morning, he does not remember the night, and when night falls, he does not remember the morning.'

One asked him for a counsel. He said: 'Prepare abundant provisions for this journey that lies before you.'

His death was in Nishapur, and he was buried in the vicinity of Abu Hafs al-Haddad, may God Almighty and Holy have mercy on them both.
