آن پیش روصف رجال و آن بدرقه راه کمال آن پیک بادیه بلا آن مرد مرتبه رضا آن طلیعهٔ فقر را مطلع شیخ ابوالخیر اقطع رحمة الله علیه از کبار مشایخ بود و از اشراف اقران و صاحب فراستی عظیم بوده و از مغرب بوده است و با ابن جلا صحبت داشته بود و سباع و آهو با او انس گرفته بوند و با شیر و اژدها هم قرینی کردی و حیوانات پیش او بسی آمدندی.
و گفت: در کوه لکام بودم سلطان می آمد هر کرا می دید دیناری بر دست می نهاد یکی به من داد پشت دست آنجا داشتم ودر کنار رفیقی انداختم اتفاق افتادکه بی وضو کراسهٔ بر گرفتم یک روز بدان بازار می رفتم با اصحاب بهم چون شوریدهٔ جماعتی دزدی کرده بودند در میان بازار ایشان بگریختند و همه خلق بهم برآمدند در صوفیان آویختند شیخ گفت: مهتر ایشان منم ایشان را خلاص دهید که رهزن منم بامریدان گفت: هیچ مگوئید آخر او را ببردند و دستش ببریدند گفتند تو چه کسی گفت: من فلانم امیر گفت: زهی آتشی که درجان ما زدی گفت: باک نیست که دستم خیانت کرده است مستحق قطع است گفت: چیزی بدستم رسیده است که دستم از آن پاکیزه تر بود و آن سیم لشکری بود ودست به چیزی رسیده است که آن ازدست من پاکیزه تر بود و آن مصحف است که بی وضو بر گرفته ام چون به خانه بازآمد عیالش فریاد برگرفت شیخ گفت: چه جای تعزیت است جای تهنیت است اگر چنان بودی که دست ما نبریدندی دل ما ببریدندی و داغ بیگانگی در دل ما نهادندی بدست ما چه بودی.

و جمعی چنین نقل کنند که در دست اوکلی افتد طبیبان گفتند دستش بباید برید او بدان رضا نداد مریدان گفتند صبر کنید تا در نماز شود او را دگر خبر نبود چنان کردند چون او نماز تمام کرد دست را بریده یافت.
نقل است که گفت: یکی در بادیه می رفت بی آب و بی آلت سفر با خود اندیشه کردم که او را به جان هیچ کار نیست روی باز پس کرد و گفت: الغیبه حرام از هوش بشدم و چون بهوش بازآمدم با خودتوبه کردم روی بازپس کرد و گفت: وهوالذی یقبل التوبة عن عباده.

و گفت: دل صافی نتوان کرد الا به تصحیح نیت باخدای و تن را صفا نتوان داد الا به خدمت اولیاء.
و گفت: دلها را جایگاهها است دلی است که جای ایمان است شفیق است بر همه مسلمانان و جهد کردن در کارهای ایشان و یاری دادن ایشان در آنچه صلاح ایشان درآن بود و دلی است که جایگاه نفاق است علامت آن حقد است و غل و حسد.

و گفت: دعوی رعونتی است که کوه حمل آن نتواند کرد.
وگفت: هیچ کس بجای شریف نرسد مگر به موافقت قرار گرفتن و ادب به جای آوردن و فریضها بجای داشتن و با بیگانگان صحبت ناکردن، رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

That leader of the ranks of men, and that guide on the path of perfection, that messenger of the wilderness of affliction, that man of the station of contentment, that dawn of the vanguard of poverty, Sheikh Abu'l-Khair al-Aqta', may Allah have mercy on him, was among the great sheikhs, and of the noble of his peers. He possessed great spiritual foresight, and was from the Maghrib. He associated with Ibn al-Jalla. Wild beasts and deer grew accustomed to him, and he kept company with lions and dragons, and animals came to him in abundance. And he said: 'I was on Mount Likam, and the Sultan was coming. Whoever he saw, he would place a dinar in their hand. He gave one to me; I held the back of my hand up and dropped it into a companion's lap. It happened that, without performing ablution, I picked up a notebook. One day I was going to the bazaar with my companions. A group had committed theft in the middle of the market and fled. The crowd gathered and seized the Sufis. The Sheikh said: 'I am their leader; release them, for I am the robber.' He said to the disciples: 'Say nothing.' In the end, they took him and cut off his hand. They asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am so-and-so.' The governor said, 'What a fire you have kindled in our souls!' He replied, 'There is no harm, for my hand committed treachery and deserved to be cut off.' He added, 'Something reached my hand, which my hand was cleaner than, and that was the soldier's silver. And my hand touched something that was cleaner than my hand, and that was the Quran (mushaf) which I took without ablution.' When he returned home, his wife began to wail. The Sheikh said, 'This is no place for condolences; it is a place for congratulations. If they had not cut off my hand, they would have cut off our heart and set the brand of estrangement upon it. What of our hand?' And a group narrates that gangrene fell upon his hand. The physicians said: 'His hand must be cut off.' He did not consent to that. The disciples said: 'Wait until he enters prayer, for he has no awareness of other things.' They did so. When he completed his prayer, he found his hand severed. It is related that he said: 'Someone was walking in the desert without water and without travel gear. I thought to myself that he had no concern for his life. The man turned back and said, 'Backbiting is forbidden.' I lost consciousness. When I came to, I repented to myself. He turned back again and said, 'And He is the One who accepts repentance from His servants.'' And he said: 'The heart cannot be purified except by rectifying one's intention with God, and the body cannot be purified except by serving the saints.' And he said: 'Hearts have their stations: there is a heart that is the abode of faith, which is compassionate toward all Muslims, striving in their affairs and helping them in what is for their benefit; and there is a heart that is the abode of hypocrisy, the signs of which are malice, deceit, and envy.' And he said: 'Pretensions are a folly that even a mountain cannot bear.' And he said: 'No one reaches a noble station except by aligning with divine decree, observing proper etiquette, fulfilling obligatory duties, and avoiding association with strangers, may Allah have mercy on him.'
