بخش ۶۵ - ذکر احمد مسروق قدس الله روحه العزیز / Section 65 - Mention of Ahmad Masruq, May Allah Sanctify His Glorious Soul

آن رکن روزگار آن قطب ابرار آن فرید دهر آن وحید عصر آنعاشق معشوق شیخ وقت احمد مسروق رحمه الله علیه از مشایخ کبار خراسان بود واز طوس بود اما در بغداد نشستی و باتفاق همه از جمله اولیاء خدای بود واو را با قطب المدار رحمةالله علیه صحبت بود او خود از اقطاب بود ازو پرسیدند که قطب کیست ظاهر نکرد اما به حکم اشارت چنان نمود که جنید است و او چهل تن را از اهل تمکین و مشایخ مکین خدمت کرده بود و فایدها گرفته و در علوم ظاهرو باطن به کمال و در مجاهده و تقوی به غایت درجه و صحبت محاسبی و سری یافته.
و گفت: پیری به نزدیک من آمد و سخن پاکیزه همی گفت: و شیرین سخن وخوش زبان بود و خاطری نیکو داشت وگفت: هر خاطری که شمارا درآید با من بگوئید مسروق گفت: مرا در خاطر آمد که او جهود است و این خاطر از من نمی رفت با جریری گفتم او را این موافق نیاید گفتم البته باوی بخواهم گفت: پس او را گفتم که تو گفتهٔ که هر خاطر که شمارادرآید با من بگوئید اکنون مرا چنین درخاطر آمد که تو جهودی ساعتی سر در پیش افکند پس گفت: راست گفتی و شهادت آورد آنگاه گفت: همه دینها و مذهبها نگه کردم گفتم اگر با هیچ قوم چیزی است با این قوم است به نزدیک شما آمدم تا بیازمایم شمارا بر حق یافتم.

و سخن اوست که هر که بغیر خدای شاد شود شادی او بجمله اندوه بود و هرکه را در خدمت خداوندانس نباشد انس وی بجمله وحشت بود و هرکه در خواطر دل با خدای تعالی مراقبت بجای آورد خدای تعالی او را در حرکات جوارح معصوم دارد.
و گفت هرکه محصن شود در تقوی آسان گردد بر وی اعراض از دنیا.

و گفت: تقوی آنست که بگوشهٔ چشم به لذات دنیا بازننگری و بدل در آن تفکر نکنی.
و گفت: بزرگ داشتن حرمت مؤمن از بزرگ داشتن حرمت خداوند بود و به حرمت بنده به محل حقیقت تقوی رسد.

و گفت: در باطن نگرستن معرفت حق از دل ببرد.
و گفت: هر کرا مودت حق بود کس بر وی غالب نتواند شد.

و گفت: دنیا را بوحشت داغ کرده اند تا انس مطیعان خدای به خدای بود نه به دنیا.
و گفت: خوف می باید که خوف بیش از رجا است که حق تعالی بهشت را بیافرید و دوزخ و هیچکس به بهشت نتواند رسید تا به دوزخ گذر نکند.

و گفت: بیشتر چیزی که عارفان از آن بترسند خوف از فوت حق بود.
و گفت: درخت معرفت را آب فکرت دهند ودرخت فکرت را آب جهل و درخت توبه را آب ندامت و درخت محبت را آب موافقت.

و گفت: هرگاه که طمع معرفت داری و پیش از آن درجهٔ انابت محکم نکرده باشی بر بساط جهل باشی و هرگاه که ارادت طلب کنی پیش از درست کردن مقام توبه در میدان غفلت باشی.
و گفت: زهد آنست که جز خدای هیچ سببی بر وی پادشاه نگردد.

و گفت: تا تو از شکم مادر بیرون آمدهٔ در خراب کردن عمر خودی، رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

That pillar of the age, that pole of the righteous, that unique one of time, that peerless one of the era, that lover of the Beloved, the Sheikh of the time, Ahmad Masruq, may Allah have mercy upon him, was among the great Sheikhs of Khorasan and was from Tus, but he resided in Baghdad. By unanimous agreement, he was among the friends of God, and he had companionship with the Pole of the Universe, may Allah have mercy upon him. He himself was one of the poles. They asked him, 'Who is the pole?' He did not reveal it openly, but by way of allusion he made it appear to be Junayd. He had served forty individuals from among the people of steadfastness and established Sheikhs, and had derived benefits, reaching perfection in the exoteric and esoteric sciences, and the ultimate degree in self-struggle and piety, and had enjoyed the companionship of al-Harith al-Muhasibi and Sari al-Saqati.

And he said: An elder came to me and spoke pure words; he was sweet-spoken and eloquent, and possessed a good mind. He said, 'Tell me of every thought that comes to your mind.' Masruq said: It occurred to my mind that he is a Jew, and this thought would not leave me. I mentioned it to al-Jariri, who said, 'This does not suit him.' I said, 'Nevertheless, I will confront him with it.' He said: So I said to him, 'You said that I should tell you of every thought that comes to your mind; now, it has occurred to my mind that you are a Jew.' He lowered his head for an hour, then said, 'You have spoken the truth,' and recited the testimony of faith. Then he said, 'I examined all religions and sects, and said to myself, if truth lies with any community, it is with this one. I came to you to test you, and I found you to be on the truth.'

And of his sayings is: Whoever finds joy in other than God, his joy will turn entirely into sorrow; and whoever does not feel intimacy in the service of the Lord, his intimacy will turn entirely into loneliness; and whoever maintains watchfulness of Almighty God in the thoughts of his heart, Almighty God will keep him preserved from sin in the movements of his limbs.

And he said: Whoever becomes fortified in piety, turning away from the world becomes easy for him.

And he said: Piety is that you do not look back at the pleasures of the world even out of the corner of your eye, and do not think about them in your heart.

And he said: Respecting the dignity of a believer is part of honoring the dignity of God, and through respecting the servant, one reaches the station of the reality of piety.

And he said: Looking into the inward takes away the knowledge of the Truth from the heart.

And he said: Whoever possesses the love of the Truth, no one can overcome him.

And he said: The world has been branded with loneliness so that the intimacy of the obedient servants of God may be with God, not with the world.

And he said: Fear is necessary, and fear must be greater than hope, for the Almighty God created Heaven and Hell, and no one can reach Heaven without passing through Hell.

And he said: The thing that gnostics fear the most is the fear of losing the Truth.

And he said: The tree of knowledge is watered by contemplation, the tree of contemplation by ignorance, the tree of repentance by remorse, and the tree of love by conformity.

And he said: Whenever you covet knowledge before firmly establishing the degree of turning to God (inabat), you are on the carpet of ignorance; and whenever you seek spiritual desire (iradat) before rectifying the station of repentance, you are in the arena of negligence.

And he said: Asceticism (zuhd) is that no cause other than God rules over one.

And he said: Ever since you came out of your mother's womb, you have been in the process of destroying your own life, may Allah have mercy on him.
