آن حجت اهل معاملت آن برهان ارباب مشاهدت آن امام اولاد نبی آن گزیده احفاد علی آن صاحب باطن و ظاهر ابوجعفر محمد باقر رضی الله عنه. به حکم آنکه ابتدای این طایفه از جعفر صادق کرده شد که از فرزندان مصطفی است علیه الصلوٰة و السلام، ختم این طایفه هم بر ایشان کرده می آید. گویند که کنیت او ابوعبدالله بود و او را باقر خواندندی. مخصوص بود به دقایق علوم و لطایف اشارت و او را کرامات مشهور است به آیات باهر و براهین زاهر و می راند در تفسیر این آیت که فمن یکفر بالطاغوت و یؤمن باللٰه فرموده است که: بازدارندهٔ تو از مطالعه حق طاغوت است، بنگر تا چه محجوبی بدان حجاب از وی بازمانده ای به ترک آن حجاب بگوی که به کشف ابدی برسی و محجوب ممنوع باشد و ممنوعی نباید که دعوی قربت کند. نقل است که از یکی از خواص او پرسیدند که او شب چون می گذراند، گفت: چون از شب لختی برود او از اوراد فارغ شود به آواز بلند گوید: الهی و سیدی، شب درآمد و ولایت تصرف ملوک به سر آمد و ستارگان ظاهر شدند و خلایق بخفتند و صوت مردمان بیارامید و مردم از در خلق رمیدند و بایست های خود بنهفتند و به نوم درها فروبستند و پاسبانان برگماشتند و آن ها که بدیشان حاجتی داشتند فرو گذاشتند. بار خدایا تو زنده ای و پاینده ای و بیننده، غنودن بر تو روا نیست و آن که تو را بدین صفت نداند هیچ نعمت را مقر نیست. تو آن خداوندی که رد سائل بر تو روا نباشد، آن که دعا کند از مؤمنان بر درگاهست سائل را باز نداری. بار خدایا چون مرگ و گور و حساب را یاد کنم چگونه از دنیا بهره ای؟ پس از تو خواهم از آن که تو را دانم و از تو جویم از آن که تو را می خوانم راحتی در حال مرگ بی برگ و عیشی در حال حساب بی عفاب. این می گفتی و می گریستی. تا شبی او را کسی گفت: یا سیدی چند گویی؟ گفت: ای دوست، یعقوب را یک یوسف گم شده، چنان بگریست علیه السلام که چشم هایش سفید شد. من ده کس از اجداد خود یعنی حسین و قبیله او را در کربلا گم کرده ام، کم از آن کی در فراق ایشان دیده ها سفید کنم. و این مناجات به عربی بود و بغایت فصیح اما ترک تطویل کرده، معانی آن را به پارسی آوردیم تا مکرر نشود و به جهت تبرک ختم کتاب را ذکر او کردیم. این بگفت و جان به حق تسلیم کرد رضی الله عنه و عن اسلافه و حشرنا الله مع اجداده و معه آمین یا رب العالمین و صلی الله علی خیر خلقه محمد و آله اجمعین و نجنا برحمتک یا ارحم الراحمین.

English translation

That proof of the people of transaction, that evidence of the masters of contemplation, that Imam of the children of the Prophet, that chosen one of the descendants of Ali, that possessor of the inward and the outward, Abu Ja'far Muhammad al-Baqir, may Allah be pleased with him. Since the beginning of this group was made with Ja'far al-Sadiq, who is from the descendants of Mustafa, peace and blessings be upon him, the completion of this group is also made with them. They say that his kunya was Abu 'Abdullah, and they called him al-Baqir. He was distinguished by the subtleties of sciences and the delicacies of indications, and his miracles are famous, with brilliant signs and shining proofs. And he expounded on the interpretation of this verse, 'Whosoever disbelieves in the Taghut and believes in Allah,' saying: 'That which prevents you from contemplating the Truth is the Taghut. Look at what veil you are veiled with, which keeps you back from Him; abandon that veil so that you may reach eternal disclosure. For the veiled one is forbidden, and the forbidden one should not claim proximity.'

It is related that one of his close companions was asked how he spent his nights. He said: When a portion of the night passed and he finished his litanies, he would say in a loud voice: 'O my Lord and my Master, the night has entered, and the sovereignty of the dominion of kings has ended, and the stars have appeared, and the creation has gone to sleep, and the voices of men have quieted down, and people have fled from the door of creation and hidden their desires, and locked the doors in sleep, and set guards, and abandoned those who had need of them. O Lord, You are the Living, the Self-Subsisting, the All-Seeing; slumber is not fit for You, and he who does not know You by this quality does not acknowledge any blessing. You are that Lord for Whom it is not fit to reject a petitioner; whoever among the believers prays is at Your threshold, and You do not turn away the petitioner. O Lord, when I remember death, the grave, and the reckoning, how can I find any enjoyment in the world? Therefore, I ask of You because I know You, and I seek from You because I call upon You: comfort in the state of death without provisions, and life in the state of reckoning without punishment.' He would say this and weep. Until one night, someone said to him: 'O my master, how much will you say this?' He replied: 'O friend, Jacob lost one Joseph, and he wept so much, peace be upon him, that his eyes turned white. I have lost ten of my forefathers, namely Husayn and his family, in Karbala; is it too much for me to turn my eyes white in separation from them?' And this supplication was in Arabic and extremely eloquent, but to avoid lengthiness, we have brought its meanings into Persian so that it is not repeated, and for the sake of blessing, we concluded the book with the mention of him. Saying this, he surrendered his soul to the Truth, may Allah be pleased with him and his ancestors, and may Allah gather us with his ancestors and him. Amen, O Lord of the Worlds, and may Allah bless the best of His creation, Muhammad, and his family entirely, and save us by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
