English translation

That one without fear in all love, that one without intellect in all heart, that moth of the candle of beauty, that restless one of the morning of union, that restless dweller, the beloved of God, Samnun the Lover, mercy of God be upon him, was unique in his state and accepted by the people of the time. He was the most subtle of the Sheikhs and had strange signs and wonderful secrets. He was a sign in love, and all the elders acknowledged his greatness. They called him Samnun the Lover for his chivalry and generosity, and he called himself Samnun the Liar. He had accompanied Sari and was a contemporary of Junayd. He has a specific school in love, and he prioritized love over knowledge, while most Sheikhs prioritized knowledge over love. He says that love is the principle and foundation of the path to God, and all states and stations are like play compared to love. In a place where the seeker is known, decline is permissible, but in the place of love, it is not permissible under any circumstances as long as his essence exists. It is narrated that when he went to Hijaz, the people of Fayd said to him, 'Speak to us.' He went up to the pulpit and spoke. He found no listeners, so he turned to the lamps and said, 'I speak to you of the words of love.' Immediately, those lamps struck each other and shattered. It is narrated that one day he was speaking about love. A bird came down from the sky and sat on his head, then on his hand, then on his lap, then sat on the ground. Then it pecked the ground so much that blood flowed from its beak, and it fell and died. It is narrated that at the end of his life, he married a wife for every Sunnah. A daughter was born. When she became three years old, a bond appeared between Samnun and her. That same night, he saw the Resurrection in a dream. He saw banners being raised for every people, and a banner was raised whose light filled the horizons. Samnun said: 'Whose people is this banner for?' They said: 'For the people of whom it is said "He loves them and they love Him," meaning the banner of the lovers.' Samnun threw himself among them. Someone came and cast him out from among them. Samnun cried out: 'Why do you cast me out?' He said: 'Because this is the banner of the lovers, and you are not of them.' He said: 'But I am called Samnun the Lover, and God knows my heart.' A voice from the unseen called out: 'O Samnun, you were among the lovers, but when your heart inclined toward that child, your name was erased from the register of lovers.' Samnun wept bitterly in the dream and said: 'O Lord, if this child is to be a cutter of my path, take her from my path.' When he woke from sleep, he heard a cry that the daughter fell from the roof and died. It is narrated that once in supplication he said: 'O God, in whatever You test me, You will find me truthful, and I submit to it and will not breathe a word.' Immediately, a pain overcame him that his soul was about to leave, and he did not breathe a word. In the morning, the neighbors said: 'O Sheikh, what was with you last night that we could not sleep from your cries?' And he had not breathed a word, but the form of his soul had come upon his form and reached the ears of the listeners until God showed him that silence is the silence of the heart; if you were truly silent, the neighbors would not have known. Do not say what you cannot do. It is narrated that once he was reciting this verse: 'I have no portion in anything but You So test me however You wish' Meaning: I have no portion except in You, my heart does not incline to any other, test me with whatever You wish. Immediately, his urine was blocked. He would go to schools and say to children: 'Pray for your lying uncle so that God may heal him.' Abu Muhammad Maghazeli says: I was with Samnun in Baghdad, they spent forty thousand dirhams on the poor and gave nothing to us. After that Samnun said: 'Come, let us go somewhere and for every dirham they gave, let us perform a rak'ah of prayer.' So we went to Mada'in and performed forty thousand rak'ahs of prayer. It is narrated that Ghulam Khalil had made himself known for Sufism before the Caliph and sold religion for the world, and always spoke ill of the Sheikhs before the Caliph, intending that they all be forsaken and no one seek blessing from them so that his status would remain and he would not be disgraced. When Samnun's fame grew and his reputation spread, Ghulam Khalil caused him much suffering and sought an opportunity to disgrace him until a wealthy woman offered herself to Samnun to marry her. Samnun did not accept. She went to Junayd to intercede with Samnun to marry her. Junayd rebuked and drove her away. The woman went to Ghulam Khalil and accused Samnun. Ghulam Khalil was happy and turned the Caliph against him. Then the Caliph ordered that Samnun be killed. When they brought the executioner, the Caliph wanted to say 'Behead him' but he became mute, his tongue was seized and he could say nothing. At night he saw in a dream that they said: 'The decline of your kingdom is tied to the life of Samnun.' In the morning he summoned Samnun and honored him and returned him with full respect. Then Ghulam Khalil's enmity toward him increased, and until the end of his life he became a leper. Someone told Samnun that Ghulam Khalil became a leper. He said: 'Perhaps one of the unreached Sufis has set his intention against him, and did not do well, for he was a challenger of the Sheikhs; sometimes the Sheikhs were blocked by his actions. May God heal him.' They told this to Ghulam Khalil, and he repented for that and sent whatever he had of goods to the Sufis. They accepted nothing. Look at the state of this group, how in the end they bring that man to the station of repentance; what would it be for someone who acknowledges them? Therefore they have said: 'No one harms them and they do not harm.' Asked about love, he said: 'It is the purity of friendship with constant remembrance, as God has said: Remember God with much remembrance.' And he said: 'The lovers of God took the honor of this world and the hereafter, for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, said: A person is with the one he loves.' And he said: 'A man is with that which he loves, so they are with God in this world and the hereafter.' And he said: 'One cannot express a thing except with something finer and more subtle than it, and nothing is finer or more subtle than love, so with what can love be expressed? Meaning, love cannot be expressed.' They said: 'Why was love joined with affliction?' He said: 'So that every base person does not claim love; when they see hardship, they flee.' Asked about poverty, he said: 'The poor person is one who is seized by his absence just as the ignorant is by presence; and the poor person has such dread of presence as the ignorant has of absence.' And he said: 'Sufism is that nothing possesses you and you possess nothing, mercy of God be upon him.'
