آن حامل امانت آن عامل دیانت آن عزیز بی زلل آن خطیر بی خلل آن سوخته حب الوطن شیخ ابوالفضل حسن رحمةالله علیه یگانهٔ زمان بود و لطیف جهان و در تقوی و محبت و معنی و فتوت درجهٔ بلند داشت و در کرامت و فراست از اندازه بیرون بود و درمعارف و حقایق انگشت نما بود و سرخسی بود و پیر شیخ ابوسعید ابوالخیر او بود.
نقلست که هر وقت که شیخ ابوسعید را قبضی بودی گفتی اسب زین کنید تا به حج رویم به مزار اوآمدی و طواف کردی تا آن قبض برخاستی و نیز هر مرید شیخ ابوسعید که اندیشه حج تطوع کردی او را بسر خاک شیخ بوالفضل فرستادی گفتی آن خاک را زیارت کن و هفت بار گرد آن طواف کن تا مقصود تو حاصل شود.

نقلست که کسی را شیخ ابوسعید قدس الله سره پرسید که این همه دولت از کجا یافتی گفت: بر کنار جوی آب می رفتم پیر شیخ ابوالفضل از آن جانب دیگر می رفت چشمش بر ما افتاد این همه دولت از آنجاست.
نقلست از امام خرامی که گفت: کودک بودم بر درختی توت شدم برگ و شاخ آن می زدم شیخ ابوالفضل می گذشت و مرا ندید دانستم که از خود غایب است وبدل با حق حاضر به حکم انبساط سر بر آورد وگفت: بار خدایا یک سال بیش است تا تو مرادنگی ندادی تا موی سر باز کنم بادوستان چنین کنند در حال همه اغصان و اوراق درختان زر دیدم گفت: عجب کاری همه تعریض ما با اعراض است گشایش دلرا با تو سخنی نتوان گفت

نقلست که در سرخس جوانی بود واله گشته ونماز نمی کرد گفتند چرا نماز نمی کنی گفت: آب کجاست دستش بگرفتند و بر سر چاه بردند و دلو بدونمودند سیزده شبانه روز دست در وی زده بود شیخ ابوالفضل گفت: او را در خانه باید کرد که دور کردهٔ شرع است.

نقلست که یک روز شیخ لقمان سرخسی نزدیک ابوالفضل آمد او را دید جزوی در دست گفت: درین جزو چه میجوئی گفت: همان چیز که تو درترک این می جوئی گفت: پس این خلاف چراست گفت: خلاف تو می بینی که از من همی پرسی که چه می جوئی از مستی هشیار شو و از هشیاری بیزار گرد تا خلاف برخیزد تا بدانی که من و تو چه می طلبیم.
نقلست که کسی به نزدیک شیخ ابوالفضل آمد و گفت: ترا دوش به خواب دیدم مرده و برجنازهٔ نهاده پیر گفت: خاموش که آن خواب خود را دیدی که ایشان هرگز نمیرند الا من عاش بالله لایموت ابدا.

نقلست که از شیخ ابوسعید ابوالخیر که گفت: به سرخس شدم پیر ابوالفضل را گفتم که مر آرزوی آنست که تفسیر یحبهم و یحبونه را از لفظ تو استماع کنم گفت: تا شب درآید که شب پرده سر بود چون شب درآمد گفت: تو قاری باش تا من مذکر باشم گفت: من یحبوهم و یحبونه برخواندم هفتصد تفسیر کرد که مکرر نبود و یکی یکی مشابه نشد تا صبح برآمد او گفت: شب برفت و ما هنوز از اندوه و شادی ناگفته و حدیث ما به پایان نرسید گفتم سر چیست گفت: توئی گفتم سرسر چیست گفت: هم توئی.
نقلست که شیخ را گفتند باران نمی بارد دعا کن تا باران بارد آن شب برفی بزرگ بارید روزی دیگر گفتند چه کردی گفت: ترینه وا خوردم یعنی که من قطبم چون من خنک شدم همه جهان که بر من می گردد خنک شد.

نقلست که او را گفتند دعائی کن از برای این سلطان تا مگر به شود که ستمها می رود ساعتی اندیشه کرد آنگاه گفت: بس خوردم میاید این گفتار یعنی او در میان می بیند و از ماضی یاد می کنید و مستقبل را یاد می کنید وقت را باشید.
و گفت: حقیقت دوچیز است حسن افتقار به خدای و این از اصول عبودیت است و حسن اقتدا کردن برسول خدای و این آنست که نفس را درو هیچ نصیب و راحت نیست.

نقلست که چون وفاتش نزدیک رسید گفتند ترا فلان جای درخاک کنیم که آنجا خاک مشایخ و بزرگان است گفت: زنهار من کیستم که مرا در جوار چنان قوم درخاک کنید بر بالای آن تل خواهم آنجا خراباتیان و دوالک بازان در خاکند در برابر ایشان مرا در خاک کنید که ایشان برحمت او نزدیکتر باشند که بیشتر آب تشنگان را دهند رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

He, the bearer of the trust, the agent of religion, the beloved without slip, the grand one without defect, the one consumed by the love of the homeland, Sheikh Abu'l-Fadl Hasan, may Allah have mercy upon him, was the unique one of his time and the subtle of the world, and held a high degree in piety, love, meaning, and spiritual chivalry, and was beyond measure in miracles and clairvoyance, and was famous in gnostic knowledge and realities. He was from Sarakhs, and he was the spiritual master of Sheikh Abu Sa'id Abu'l-Khayr. It is related that whenever Sheikh Abu Sa'id experienced spiritual constriction, he would say: 'Saddle the horse so we may go to Hajj,' and he would come to his tomb and circumambulate it until that constriction lifted. And also, whichever disciple of Sheikh Abu Sa'id contemplated performing a voluntary Hajj, he would send them to the grave of Sheikh Abu'l-Fadl, saying: 'Visit that dust and circumambulate it seven times so that your goal may be achieved.' It is related that Sheikh Abu Sa'id (may Allah sanctify his secret) asked someone: 'From where did you find all this fortune?' He said: 'I was walking along the bank of a stream, and the master Sheikh Abu'l-Fadl was walking on the other side. His gaze fell upon us, and all this fortune comes from that.' It is related from Imam Khurami who said: 'I was a child, and I climbed a mulberry tree, striking its leaves and branches. Sheikh Abu'l-Fadl was passing by and did not see me. I knew he was absent from himself and present in his heart with the Truth. Out of spiritual expansion, he raised his head and said: O Lord! It is more than a year since You did not give me a dang [a tiny coin] so that I could get my hair cut; do they do such with friends? Immediately, I saw all the branches and leaves of the trees turn to gold. He said: How strange a work! All our complaints are met with aversion; one cannot speak a word to You for the opening of the heart.' Verse: If I spoke a word out of intoxication, Why did you bind the camel to our caravan? It is related that in Sarakhs there was a young man who had become bewildered and did not pray. They asked him, 'Why do you not pray?' He said, 'Where is water?' They took his hand, led him to the well, and showed him the bucket. He kept holding onto it for thirteen days and nights. Sheikh Abu'l-Fadl said: 'He must be put inside the house, for he is put far by the sacred law.' It is related that one day Sheikh Luqman of Sarakhs came near Abu'l-Fadl and saw him holding a book. He said, 'What do you seek in this book?' He replied, 'The same thing that you seek in abandoning it.' Luqman said, 'Then why this disagreement?' He replied, 'The disagreement is what you see, as you ask me what I seek. Wake up from intoxication and become weary of sobriety so that the disagreement may disappear, and you may know what you and I are seeking.' It is related that someone came to Sheikh Abu'l-Fadl and said, 'Last night I saw you in a dream, dead and placed on a bier.' The master said, 'Be silent, for you saw that dream about yourself, because they never die, except he who lives by Allah never dies.' It is related from Sheikh Abu Sa'id Abu'l-Khayr who said: 'I went to Sarakhs, and I said to the master Abu'l-Fadl: My desire is to hear the commentary on "He loves them and they love Him" from your own lips. He said: Wait until night falls, for night is the curtain of secrets. When night fell, he said: You be the reciter and I will be the expounder. He said: I recited "He loves them and they love Him," and he gave seven hundred interpretations, none of which was repeated, and no two were alike, until morning broke. He said: The night has gone, and we have not yet spoken of sorrow and joy, and our discourse has not come to an end. I asked, "What is the secret?" He said, "You are." I asked, "What is the secret of the secret?" He said, "Also you." It is related that they said to the Sheikh, 'It is not raining, pray so that it may rain.' That night a great snow fell. The next day they asked him, 'What did you do?' He said, 'I ate cold tareeneh; meaning, I am the pole; when I cooled down, the whole world which revolves around me cooled down.' It is related that they said to him, 'Make a prayer for this Sultan so that he may improve, for oppressions are ongoing.' He contemplated for an hour, then said, 'This talk makes me sick; meaning, he sees him in the midst, and you remember the past and remember the future. Be in the present moment.' And he said: 'Truth consists of two things: the beauty of neediness before God, and this is of the principles of servitude; and the beauty of following the Messenger of God, and this is that in which the lower self has no share or comfort.' It is related that when his death drew near, they said, 'Shall we bury you in such-and-such place where the dust of the masters and elders is?' He said, 'Beware! Who am I that you should bury me in the neighborhood of such people? I want to be on top of that hill where the tavern-dwellers and gamblers are buried. Bury me facing them, for they are closer to His mercy, since they give more water to the thirsty.' May Allah have mercy on him.
