The Motif of the Madman (Divana) in Elahi Nameh
In Farid al-Din Attar's Elahi Nameh, the figure of the madman (divana or majnun) frequently appears as a prominent literary and mystical device. These 'wise fools' operate outside conventional societal norms and the bounds of rational intellect. This perceived insanity grants them a unique spiritual freedom, allowing them to speak with unfiltered frankness to figures of worldly authority—such as Sultan Mahmud—or even directly to God. Through their unconventional behavior and dialogue, the divanas articulate profound mystical insights, challenge superficial pieties, and demonstrate the absolute vulnerability, inner turmoil, and passionate devotion required on the Sufi path.
