بخش ۵۴ - ذکر ابومحمد مرتعش قدس الله روحه العزیز / Section 54 - Mention of Abu Muhammad Murta'ish, May Allah Sanctify His Glorious Soul

آن به جان سابق معنی آن بتن لایق تقوی آن سالک بساط وجدان پرورش شیخ ابومحمد مرتعش رحمةالله علیه از بزرگان مشایخ و معتبران اهل تصوف بود و مقبول اکابر و سفرها بتجرید کرده و بخدمتهاء شایسته معروف و مشهور طوایف بود و بریاضات و مجاهدات مخصوص و از حیرهٔ نیشابور بود ابوحفص را دیده بود و با ابوعثمان و جنید صحبت داشته و مقام اودر شونیزیه بود و در بغداد وفات کرد.
نقلست که گفت: سیزده حج کردم بتوکل چون نگه کردم همه بر هوای نفس بود گفتند چون دانستی گفت: از آنکه مادرم گفت: سبوئی آب آر بر من گران آمد دانستم که آن حج بر شره شهوت بود و هواء نفس.

درویشی گفت: در بغداد بودم و خاطر حج داشتم در دلم آمد که مرتعش می آید و پانزده درم می آرد تا رکوه و رسن ونعلین خرم و در بادیه روم در حال یکی در بزدباز کردم مرتعش بود رکوه در دست گفت: بستان گفتم نگیریم گفت: بگیر و مرا رنجه مدار چند درم خواستی گفتم پانزده درم گفت: بگیر که پانزده درم است.
نقلست که روزی در محلتی از بغداد می رفت تشنه شد از خانه آب خواست دختری صاحب جمال کوزهٔ آب آورد دلش صید جمال او شد همانجا بنشست تا خداوند خانه بیامد گفت: ای خواجه دلی بشربتی آب گرانست مرا از خانه تو شربتی آب دادند و دلم بردند آن مرد گفت: آن دختر منست بزنی بتو دادم و او را به خانه برد وعقد نکاح کرد و خداوندخانه ازمنعمان بغداد بود و مرتعش را به گرمابه فرستاد و خرقه بیرون کرد و جامه پاکیزه در وی پوشید چون شب درآمد دختر بوی دادند مرتعش برخاست و به نماز مشغول شد ناگاه در میان نماز فریاد برآورد که مرقع من بیارید گفتند چه افتاد گفت: بسرم ندا کردند که به یکی نظر که بغیر ما کردی جامهٔ اهل صلاح از ظاهر تو برکشیدیم اگر نظری دیگر کنی لباس آشنائی از باطنت برکشیم مرقع در پوشید و زن را طلاق داد.

نقلست که اور اگفتند که فلان کس بر سر آب می رود گفت: آنرا که خدای توفیق دهد که مخالفت هواء خودکند بزرگتر از آن بود که در هوا پرد و بر آب رود.
نقلست که در اعتکاف نشسته بود آخر ماه رمضان در جامع بعد از دو روز بیرون آمد گفتند چرا اعتکاف را باطل کردی گفت: جماعتی قراء را نتوانستم دید و آندید طاعت ایشان بر من گران آمد.

و سخن اوست که ره که گمان برد که فعل او را از آتش نجات دهد یا به بهشت رساند به یقین خود رادر خطر انداخته است و هر که اعتماد بر فضل خدای تعالی دارد حق تعالی او را به بهشت رساند کما قال الله تعالی قل یفضل الله و برحمته فبذلک فلیفرحوا.
و گفت: آرام گرفتن اسباب در دل منقطع گرداند از اعتماد کردن بر مسبب الاسباب.

پرسیدند که بچه چیز بنده دوستی خدای حاصل تواند کرد گفت: به دشمنی آنچه خدای دشمن گرفته است و آن دنیا است و نفس.
و گفت: اصل توحید سه است شناختن خدای را بربوبیت و اقرار کردن خدای را بوحدانیت و نفی کردن جملهٔ انداد.

و گفت: عارف صید معروف است که معروف او را صید کرده است تا مکرمش گرداند و در حظیرة القدس بنشاند.
و گفت: درست کردن معاملات بدو چیز است صبر و اخلاص صبر بروی و اخلاص دروی.

و گفت: مخلص چون دل بحق دهد سلوت باشد و چون به خلق دهد فکرت باشد.
و گفت: تصوف حسن خلق است.

و گفت: تصوف حالی است که گرداند صاحب آنرا از گفت: و گوی و می برد تا به خدای ذوالمنن و از آنجا بیرون گراند تا خدای بماند و او نیست شود.
و گفت: این مذهبی است همه جد بهزل آمیخته مگردانید.

و گفت: عزیزترین نشستن فقرا آن بود که با فقرا نشینند پس چون بینی که فقیر جدا گردد از فقیر به یقین دان که از علتی خالی نیست.
نقلست که بعضی از اصحاب ازو وصیت خواستند گفت: پیش کسی روید که شما را به از من بود و مرا به کسی بگذارید که به از شما باشد رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

That vanguard of spiritual meaning in soul, that fitting model of piety in body, that traveler on the carpet of experiential finding, Sheikh Abu Muhammad Murta'ish, may Allah have mercy on him, was among the great sheikhs and respected figures of Sufism. He was accepted by the elders, traveled in detachment, was famous and renowned among the groups for his worthy services, and was distinguished in spiritual disciplines and struggles. He was from Hayra of Nishapur, had met Abu Hafs, associated with Abu Uthman and Junayd, resided in Shuniziyya, and passed away in Baghdad.

It is narrated that he said: 'I performed thirteen pilgrimages (Hajj) relying solely on trust in God (tawakkul). When I examined them, I found they were all driven by personal desire.' They asked, 'How did you know?' He replied, 'Because when my mother told me, 'Bring a pitcher of water,' it felt heavy upon me. I knew then that those pilgrimages were done out of the greed of passion and personal desire.'

A dervish said: 'I was in Baghdad and had the intention of performing Hajj. It came to my heart that Murta'ish would come and bring fifteen dirhams so that I could buy a water-skin, rope, and sandals and go into the desert. Immediately, someone knocked on the door. I opened it, and it was Murta'ish with a water-skin in hand. He said, 'Take it.' I said, 'I will not take it.' He said, 'Take it and do not trouble me. How many dirhams did you want?' I said, 'Fifteen dirhams.' He said, 'Take it, for it is fifteen dirhams.''

It is narrated that one day he was walking in a neighborhood of Baghdad and became thirsty. He asked for water from a house. A beautiful girl brought a pitcher of water, and his heart was captured by her beauty. He sat down right there until the master of the house arrived. He said, 'O master, a heart is a heavy price for a drink of water! They gave me a drink of water from your house and stole my heart.' The man said, 'She is my daughter, I give her to you in marriage.' He took him inside, performed the marriage contract, and since the master of the house was among the wealthy of Baghdad, he sent Murta'ish to the bathhouse, took off his patched cloak (khirqa), and dressed him in clean clothes. When night fell and they brought the daughter to him, Murta'ish stood up and engaged in prayer. Suddenly, in the middle of the prayer, he cried out, 'Bring my patched cloak!' They asked, 'What happened?' He said, 'A voice called out inside my head: 'For one glance that you cast upon other than Us, We stripped the garment of the righteous from your outward appearance. If you glance again, We shall strip the garment of intimacy from your inward being.' He put on the patched cloak and divorced the woman.'

It is narrated that they told him, 'So-and-so walks on water.' He said, 'He whom God grants the success to oppose his own desires performs a greater feat than one who flies in the air and walks on water.'

It is narrated that he was sitting in spiritual retreat (i'tikaf) at the end of the month of Ramadan in the congregational mosque. After two days, he came out. They asked, 'Why did you break your retreat?' He said, 'I could not bear to look at a group of Quran reciters, and seeing their obedience felt heavy upon me.'

And it is his saying: 'Whoever believes that his actions will save him from the Fire or bring him to Paradise has surely put himself in danger. And whoever relies on the grace of God Almighty, God Almighty will bring him to Paradise, as Allah Almighty said: 'Say, In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy - in that let them rejoice.''

And he said: 'Finding peace in secondary causes within the heart cuts one off from relying on the Cause of causes (God).'

They asked him, 'By what thing can a servant attain the love of God?' He said, 'By holding as an enemy what God holds as an enemy, and that is the worldly life and the self (nafs).'

And he said: 'The principle of Monotheism (Tawhid) is three things: knowing God through His Lordship, declaring God's Oneness, and negating all peers.'

And he said: 'The gnostic (arif) is the prey of the Known (God), who has captured him to honor him and seat him in the Holy Fold.'

And he said: 'The correctness of transactions is in two things: patience and sincerity—patience upon Him, and sincerity in Him.'

And he said: 'The sincere one, when he gives his heart to the Truth (God), finds comfort, and when he gives it to creation, finds anxiety.'

And he said: 'Sufism is good character.'

And he said: 'Sufism is a state that silences its possessor from talk and chatter, carrying him to the Lord of Grace, and taking him beyond that until only God remains and he is annihilated.'

And he said: 'This is a path of absolute earnestness; do not mix it with jest.'

And he said: 'The most precious sitting of the dervishes (poor) is when they sit with other dervishes. Therefore, when you see a dervish separate himself from other dervishes, know for certain that it is not without a defect.'

It is narrated that some of his companions asked him for a testament. He said: 'Go to someone who is better to you than I am, and leave me to someone who is better than you.' May Allah have mercy on him.
