Section 40 - In Description of the Daf

Original content

English translation

A moon-faced form stepped forward, Having placed its foot upon its head like the heavens. It had a face like the moon of heaven, Yet it raised a lament from five moons. A slap was struck upon its moon-like face, Such that it cried out in pain from it. Its face shone so from the back of the hand, That in its agility it leaped out of the hoop. When its voice breathed life into the hoop, It brought the heads of many into the hoop. When it appeared hoop-like like the heavens, The jingles of its hoop were like stars. Three different things became its body: It came from animal, plant, and mineral. It had two faces and four corners but no head, It knocked on many rings from every side, but had no entry. When the beloved played it with the heart's love, It could not contain itself in its skin out of joy. Although it saw the face of the beloved outside, It did not come out of its skin in front of him. Although its skin came to it from a deer, A fine lion-conquering quality came upon it. When that footless and headless one raised its voice, No one could distinguish head from foot. While its sweet voice held everyone in ecstasy, It was listening to its own beautiful singing. Its path was connected to every musical mode, Yet its own veil remained closed. A moon-faced beauty arose from the curtain, And struck that curved one in the right mode.
