الا ای کبک کهسار معانی
چو آتش خورده آب زندگانی

بمانده در کنار خضر و الیاس
شده مشغول در سفتن بالماس

ترا چون چشمهٔ خضرست بر در
چه ماندی در عجایب چون سکندر

ز تاریکی، بسوی چشمه شو باز
ز چشمه، گوهر روشن برانداز

تو را این چشمه، کآبشخور از آنجاست
یقین دانم که این گوهر از آنجاست

تویی چون کبک در کان گهر تو
شده با تیغ دایم در کمر تو

چو اندر کوکب دری سخن ساز
سخن گویی تو چون کبک دری باز

تو دایم همچو کبک نازنینی
که هر دم بر سر سنگی نشینی

چو کبکی میجهی از کان گوهر
ازین سرسنگ، بر سر سنگ دیگر

چو کبک از کوه، هر ساعت درایی
بقعر چشمهٔ گوهر برایی

اگر تو معنی سنگین ببینی
چو کبکی بر سر سنگی نشینی

کنی چون کبک، خون آلوده منقار
ز سنگ آتش برون آری بگفتار

کنی با سنگ چندانی ستیزه
که خصم تو شود آن سنگ ریزه

English translation

O partridge of the mountain of meaning, Who, like fire, has consumed the water of life, Having remained in the presence of Khidr and Elias, Occupied with drilling with a diamond. Since the spring of Khidr is at your door, Why have you lingered in wonders like Alexander? From the darkness, turn back towards the spring; From the spring, cast out a bright gem. For you, this spring, from which is the watering-place, I know for certain that this gem is from there. You are like a partridge in a mine of gems, Constantly with a sword girded at your waist. When you fashion speech in the pearly star, You speak again like a royal partridge. You are always like a graceful partridge, That sits upon a stone at every moment. Like a partridge you leap from the mine of gems, From this stone-top to another stone-top. Like a partridge from the mountain, you descend every hour, To enter the depth of the fountain of gems. If you perceive a heavy meaning, Like a partridge you will sit upon a stone. Like a partridge, you make your beak blood-stained; From the stone, you bring out fire through speech. You quarrel so much with the stone, That even that small pebble becomes your adversary.
