الا ای شاخ طوبی شکل چونی
چو شاخی می مکن این سرنگونی

بشرق وغرب بگذشته چو برقی
ولیکن تو برون غرب و شرقی

تو در مشکوة حسنی چون چراغی
چراغ شاخسار هشت باغی

چو از نور دو کونی چشم روشن
ترا زیتونهٔ قدسست روغن

ازان روغن بشکلی میفروزی
که شمع آسمان را می بسوزی

چو تو شاخ درخت لامکانی
درختت خورده آب زندگانی

ازان نور مبارک پرتوی خواه
خرد را در سخن بیرون شوی خواه

طبیعت را بمعنی کار فرمای
عروسان سخن را روی بگشای

کزین پس جادوییهای سخنگوی
ترا معلوم گردد ای سخن جوی

دریغا ماه هست و مشتری نه
جهان پر جوهرست وجوهری نه

سخن را نظم دادن سهل باشد
ولی گر عذب نبود جهل باشد

چو بنیادی نهد مرد سخن ساز
نشاید مختلف انجام و آغاز

که گر شاگرد، بد بنیاد باشد
نشان آفت استاد باشد

کنون ای مرد دانا گوش بگشای
عروس نطق معنی بین سراپای

چنین گفت آنکه او پیر کهن بود
جوان بختی که جانش پر سخن بود

که چون گل دایه را در گل دفین کرد
از آنجا راه بر دیگر زمین کرد

گل و حسنای حسن افزای و خسرو
روان گشتند با یاران شبرو

چنان راندند مرکب در بیابان
که بر روی زمین باد شتابان

اگر بگذاشتی هر یک عنانرا
بیک تک در نوردیدی جهان را

نه باد تیز رو آن پیشه در یافت
نه آن تک را بوهم اندیشه دریافت

بماهی جمله در خشکی براندند
بماهی نیز در کشتی بماندند

چو خسرو شاه از دریا برون رفت
بحد کشور قیصر درون رفت

بده روز دگر راندند یکسر
که تا نزدیک آمد قصر قیصر

ز منزلگاه، فرخ زاد شبرو
بتک میرفت تادرگاه خسرو

برشه بارخواست و در درون شد
پس آنگه حال برگفتش که چون شد

بسی بگریست آن دم تنگدل شاه
برآورد از میان جان و دل آه

ازان پاسخ دل شه شد دگرگون
عجب ماند از عجایب کارگردون

همی گفت ای سپهر هیچ در هیچ
زهی بند و طلسم پیچ در پیچ

نیابد هیچکس سر رشتهٔ تو
همه عالم شده سرگشتهٔ تو

منادیگر برآمد گرد کشور
که تا کشور بیارایند یکسر

ز بهر شاه، شهر آرای سازند
جهان را خلد جان افزای سازند

چنان آرایشی سازند خرم
که روم افسر شود بر فرق عالم

بهر سویی که فرخ زاد سریافت
زهر بخشندهیی چیزی دگر یافت

بیک ره خلق عزم راه کردند
زنان شهر را آگاه کردند

دو صد خاتون و مهدی بیست زر بفت
برون بردند و فرخ پیشتر رفت

چو ازره پیش خسرو شه رسیدند
نقاب از چهرچون مه برکشیدند

زمین را پیش شه از لب بسودند
درآن گفت و شنود آن شب غنودند

چو این هفت آشیان زیر و زبر شد
هزاران مرغ زرین سر بدر شد

کبوتر خانهٔ این هفت طارم
تهی کردند از مرغان انجم

بیک ره از ده آیات ستاره
فرو شستند لوح هفت پاره

شه قیصر برون آمد دگر روز
باستقبال فرزند دل افروز

سواری ده هزارش از پس و پیش
بزرگان هرکه بودند از کم و بیش

چو خسرو را نظر بر قیصر افتاد
بخدمت کردن از مرکب درافتاد

زمین را پیش شه بوسید ده جای
وزان پس، سرفگند استاد بر پای

ز مهر دل، گرستن بر شه افتاد
دگر ره پیش قیصر در ره افتاد

شهش در برگرفت و زار بگریست
میان خوشدلی بسیار بگریست

بزرگان هر دو تن را برنشاندند
سخن گویان ازان منزل براندند

سرافرازان، چو شاهان در رسیدند
بزیر پای اسپ اطلس کشیدند

زمانی شور بردابرد برخاست
همه صحرا غبار و گرد برخاست

جنیبتها و هودجها روان شد
ز هر جانب یکی خادم دوان شد

روارو، ازیلان برخاست حالی
ز خلق روم ره کردند خالی

هزاران چتر زرین نگونساز
ز یک یک سوی میآمد پدیدار

نشسته بود گلرخ در عماری
بزیرش مرکبان راهواری

سر آن مرکبان از زر گرانبار
هزاران سرازان یک مونگونسار

بگرد گل عماریهای دیگر
صد و پنجاه سر بت زیر چادر

کمیتی هر یکی آورده در زین
سرافسارش مرصع، طوق زرین

زمین از زر و گوهر موجزن بود
جهانی در جهانی مرد و زن بود

بهر صد گام طاقی بسته بودند
بطاق آسمان پیوسته بودند

زهر کو، بانگ نوش مهتران بود
زهر سو، نعرهیی بر آسمان بود

نشسته ماهرویان، روی بر روی
می گلرنگ میخوردند هر سوی

ز موسیقار، غلغل می برآمد
ز گل صد بانگ بلبل می برآمد

پیاله برخروش چنگ میشد
خروش چنگ یک فرسنگ میشد

ز زیر پرده، چنگ آواز میداد
چو شکر، نی جوابش باز میداد

خرد بر سر فتاده دوش میزد
چودیگی کاسهٔ می جوش میزد

ز یک یک دست می دو رویه میشد
بشش سه چار، دست انبویه میشد

پیاله کالبد را چون تهی کرد
هزاران کالبد را جان رهی کرد

ز بانگ دار و گیر نعرهٔ نوش
همه کشور چو دریا بود در جوش

سپهر پیر را بر روی عالم
ز شادی لب نمیآمد فراهم

English translation

O you who are shaped like the branch of the Tuba tree, how are you? Do not bend down or hang your head like a common branch. You have passed through East and West like a flash of lightning, Yet you transcend both the East and the West. In the niche of beauty, you are like a lamp, The lamp of the branches of the eight gardens of Paradise. Since you are the light of both worlds that brightens the eye, Your oil is from the holy olive tree. With that oil, you shine in such a way That you outburn the candle of the sky. Since you are a branch of the tree of the Placeless, Your tree has drunk the water of life. Seek a ray of light from that blessed illumination, And seek an outlet for the intellect in speech. Set nature to work upon spiritual meaning, And unveil the brides of speech. So that henceforth, the magic of the eloquent tongue Will become known to you, O seeker of speech. Alas! The moon is there, but there is no buyer, The world is full of jewels, but there is no jeweler. To put words into order and verse is easy, But if it is not sweet, it is ignorance. When the speechmaker lays a foundation, The beginning and the end should not be discordant. For if the disciple is poorly grounded, It is a sign of the master's ruin. Now, O wise man, open your ears, Behold the bride of speech and meaning from head to toe. Thus spoke he who was an ancient elder, A fortunate youth whose soul was filled with speech: That when Gol buried the nurse in the clay, She set off from there toward another land. Gol, the beauty-enhancing Hosna, and Khosrow Departed with their night-traveling companions. They rode their mounts through the desert in such a way, Like the swift wind blowing across the face of the earth. If any of them had let loose the reins, In a single stride they would have traversed the world. Neither the swift-moving wind could overtake them, Nor could thought or imagination grasp their speed. For a month, they all rode across the dry land, And for another month, they remained aboard a ship. When King Khosrow emerged from the sea, He entered the territory of the Caesar. They rode continuously for another ten days, Until they came close to the Caesar's palace. From the station, the night-traveling Farrokhzad Went at a gallop to the court of Khosrow. He requested an audience with the king and went inside, And then explained to him how things had transpired. The sorrowful king wept bitterly at that moment, Heaving a deep sigh from the depths of his heart and soul. From that news, the king's heart was transformed, And he was left astonished by the wonders of the turning heaven. He kept saying: 'O void-in-void firmament, What a winding snare and convoluted spell! No one can find the end of your thread, The entire world has become bewildered by you.' A herald went out across the country, Declaring that they should decorate the land entirely. To prepare a grand city-decoration for the king, And turn the world into a soul-refreshing paradise. They should make such a joyous preparation That Rome becomes a crown upon the head of the universe. Wherever Farrokhzad turned his head, He received something different from every generous donor. All at once, the people resolved to set out, And they informed the women of the city. Two hundred noble ladies and twenty golden litters Were brought forth, while Farrokh went on ahead. When they arrived from the road before King Khosrow, They drew back the veils from their moon-like faces. They kissed the ground before the king, And after that conversation, they slept that night. When this seven-layered nest turned upside down, Thousands of golden birds reared their heads. They emptied the dovecote of these seven domes Of the birds of the stars. All at once, they washed clean the seven-part tablet Of the ten signs of the stars. The Caesar-King came out the next day To welcome his heart-brightening son. Ten thousand horsemen rode before and behind him, Along with all the nobles, great and small. When Khosrow's gaze fell upon the Caesar, He dismounted from his horse to pay his respects. He kissed the ground ten times before the king, And then, he bowed his head down to his feet. Out of heartfelt love, the king began to weep, And once again fell down before the Caesar on the path. The king embraced him and wept bitterly, Weeping copiously amidst their joy. The nobles helped both of them mount, And conversing, they rode on from that station. As the exalted kings arrived, They spread satin beneath the horses' hooves. For a time, the clamor of 'Bring him, bring him!' arose, And the entire desert was filled with rising dust. Led horses and litters set in motion, And from every side, a servant ran. The cry of 'Make way, make way!' arose from the heroes, And they cleared the path of the people of Rome. Thousands of golden umbrellas, hanging down, Appeared from each and every direction. Golrokh was seated in a canopy litter, Carried by swift and easy-paced steeds. The heads of those steeds were heavily laden with gold, Thousands of heads, each adorned and bowed. Around Gol were other canopy litters, With a hundred and fifty idol-like beauties under veils. Each riding a bay horse in saddle, Their reins jeweled and their collars made of gold. The ground was surging with gold and jewels, And there were worlds upon worlds of men and women. Every hundred paces, they had erected an arch, That seemed connected to the arch of heaven. From every street, the chiefs shouted toasts of 'Drink!', And from every direction, a clamor rose to the sky. Moon-faced beauties sat face to face, Drinking rosy wine on every side. From the panpipes, a great clamor arose, And from the roses, a hundred songs of the nightingale burst forth. The wine-cup moved to the clamor of the harp, The sound of the harp carrying for a league. From behind the curtain, the harp gave voice, And the reed-flute answered it as sweetly as sugar. Intellect was cast aside and overwhelmed, As the bowl of wine boiled like a cauldron. From each and every hand, wine passed back and forth, In groups of six, three, or four, the crowd gathered thick. When the cup emptied the body, It delivered the souls of thousands of bodies. From the shouts of 'Seize!' and the cries of 'Drink!', The entire country boiled like a sea in commotion. The ancient sky, looking upon the face of the world, Could not close its lips from sheer joy.
