وحی آمد سوی موسی از خدا
بندهٔ ما را ز ما کردی جدا

تو برای وصل کردن آمدی
یا برای فصل کردن آمدی؟

تا توانی پا منه اندر فراق
ابغض الاشیاء عندي الطلاق

هر کسی را سیرتی بنهاده ام
هر کسی را اصطلاحی داده ام

در حق او مدح و در حق تو ذم
در حق او شهد و در حق تو سم

ما بری از پاک و ناپاکی همه
از گرانجانی و چالاکی همه

من نکردم امر تا سودی کنم
بلک تا بر بندگان جودی کنم

هندوان را اصطلاح هند مدح
سندیان را اصطلاح سند مدح

من نگردم پاک از تسبیحشان
پاک هم ایشان شوند و درفشان

ما زبان را ننگریم و قال را
ما روان را بنگریم و حال را

ناظر قلبیم اگر خاشع بود
گرچه گفت لفظ، ناخاضع رود

زانک دل جوهر بود، گفتن عرض
پس طفیل آمد عرض، جوهر غرض

چند ازین الفاظ و اضمار و مجاز؟
سوز خواهم سوز، با آن سوز ساز

آتشی از عشق در جان بر فروز
سر بسر فکر و عبارت را بسوز

موسیا آداب دانان دیگرند
سوخته جان و روانان دیگرند

عاشقان را هر نفس سوزیدنیست
بر ده ویران خراج و عشر نیست

گر خطا گوید، ورا خاطی مگو
گر بود پر خون شهید، او را مشو

خون، شهیدان را ز آب اولیٰ ترست
این خطا، از صد صواب اولیٰ ترست

در درون کعبه رسم قبله نیست
چه غم ار غواص را پاچیله نیست؟

تو ز سرمستان قلاوزی مجو
جامه چاکان را چه فرمایی رفو؟

ملت عشق از همه دینها جداست
عاشقان را ملت و مذهب خداست

لعل را گر مهر نبود باک نیست
عشق در دریای غم، غمناک نیست

English translation

Revelation came from God to Moses: "You have separated Our servant from Us. Did you come to bring union, or did you come to make separation? As far as you can, do not set foot in separation; 'The most hateful of things in My sight is divorce.' I have placed a nature in each person; I have given each person an idiom. For him it is praise, and for you blame; for him honey, and for you poison. We are free from all purity and impurity, from all heaviness of spirit and agility. I did not command in order to gain profit, but rather to show generosity to the servants. For Indians, the Indian idiom is praise; for Sindis, the Sindi idiom is praise. I do not become pure through their glorification; rather, they become pure and pearl-scattering. We do not look at the tongue and the speech; we look at the soul and the state. We are watchers of the heart, if it is humble, even if an unhumble utterance comes out. For the heart is substance and speech is accident; therefore the accident is derivative, and the substance is the aim. How long this talk of words, implications, and metaphor? I want burning, burning; be in tune with that burning. Kindle a fire of love in the soul; burn thought and expression from end to end. Moses, knowers of etiquette are one kind; those burned in soul and spirit are another. For lovers there is burning at every breath; no land tax or tithe is owed on a ruined village. If he speaks wrongly, do not call him wrongdoer; if he is full of blood, do not wash him: he is a martyr. The blood of martyrs is better than water; this error is better than a hundred right acts. Inside the Ka'ba there is no rule of qibla-facing; what grief is it to the diver if he has no leggings? Do not seek a guide from the drunken ones; what order of mending would you give to the garment-torn? The religion of love is apart from all religions; for lovers, God is religion and creed. If the ruby has no seal-mark, there is no harm; love, in the sea of grief, is not grief-stricken."
