این چنین ذالنون مصری را فتاد
کاندرو شور و جنونی نو بزاد

شور چندان شد که تا فوق فلک
می رسید از وی جگرها را نمک

هین منه تو شور خود ای شوره خاک
پهلوی شور خداوندان پاک

خلق را تاب جنون او نبود
آتش او ریشهاشان می ربود

چونک در ریش عوام آتش فتاد
بند کردندش به زندانی نهاد

نیست امکان واکشیدن این لگام
گرچه زین ره تنگ می آیند عام

دیده این شاهان ز عامه خوف جان
کین گره کورند و شاهان بی نشان

چونک حکم اندر کف رندان بود
لاجرم ذاالنون در زندان بود

یکسواره می رود شاه عظیم
در کف طفلان چنین در یتیم

در چه؟ دریا نهان در قطره ای
آفتابی مخفی اندر ذره ای

آفتابی خویش را ذره نمود
واندک اندک روی خود را بر گشود

جملهٔ ذرات در وی محو شد
عالم از وی مست گشت و صحو شد

چون قلم در دست غداری بود
بی گمان منصور بر داری بود

چون سفیهان راست این کار و کیا
لازم آمد یقتلون الانبیا

انبیا را گفته قومی راه گم
از سفه انا تطیرنا بکم

جهل ترسا بین امان انگیخته
زان خداوندی که گشت آویخته

چون بقول اوست مصلوب جهود
پس مرورا امن کی تاند نمود

چون دل آن شاه زیشان خون بود
عصمت و انت فیهم چون بود

زر خالص را و زرگر را خطر
باشد از قلاب خاین بیشتر

یوسفان از رشک زشتان مخفی اند
کز عدو خوبان در آتش می زیند

یوسفان از مکر اخوان در چهند
کز حسد یوسف به گرگان می دهند

از حسد بر یوسف مصری چه رفت؟
این حسد اندر کمین گرگیست زفت

لاجرم زین گرگ، یعقوب حلیم
داشت بر یوسف، همیشه خوف و بیم

گرگ ظاهر گرد یوسف خود نگشت
این حسد در فعل از گرگان گذشت

رحم کرد این گرگ وز عذر لبق
آمده که انا ذهبنا نستبق

صد هزاران گرگ را این مکر نیست
عاقبت رسوا شود این گرگ بیست

زانک حشر حاسدان روز گزند
بی گمان بر صورت گرگان کنند

حشر پر حرص خس مردارخوار
صورت خوکی بود روز شمار

زانیان را گند اندام نهان
خمرخواران را بود گند دهان

گند مخفی کان به دلها می رسید
گشت اندر حشر محسوس و پدید

بیشه ای آمد وجود آدمی
بر حذر شو زین وجود ار زان دمی

در وجود ما هزاران گرگ و خوک
صالح و ناصالح و خوب و خشوک

حکم آن خو راست کان غالبترست
چونک زر بیش از مس آمد آن زرست

سیرتی کان بر وجودت غالبست
هم بر آن تصویر حشرت واجبست

ساعتی گرگی در آید در بشر
ساعتی یوسف رخی همچون قمر

می رود از سینه ها در سینه ها
از ره پنهان صلاح و کینه ها

بلک خود از آدمی در گاو و خر
می رود دانایی و علم و هنر

اسپ سکسک می شود رهوار و رام
خرس بازی می کند بز هم سلام

رفت اندر سگ ز آدمیان هوس
تا شبان شد یا شکاری یا حرس

در سگ اصحاب خویی زان وفود
رفت تا جویای الله گشته بود

هر زمان در سینه نوعی سر کند
گاه دیو و گه ملک گه دام و دد

زان عجب بیشه که هر شیر آگهست
تا به دام سینه ها پنهان رهست

دزدیی کن از درون مرجان جان
ای کم از سگ از درون عارفان

چونک دزدی باری آن در لطیف
چونک حامل می شوی باری شریف

English translation

It happened thus to Dhu al-Nun of Egypt, That a new fervor and madness was born in him. The fervor became so great that up to the heaven above, From it, salt reached the livers (hearts). Beware, do not put your own turmoil, O salty earth, Beside the fervor of the pure lords! The people had no endurance for his madness, His fire was snatching away their beards. When the fire fell into the beards of the vulgar, They bound him and put him in a prison. There is no possibility of drawing back this rein, Although the vulgar are distressed by this path. These kings have seen the fear of their lives from the vulgar, For this group is blind and the kings are traceless. Since the judgment is in the hands of the ruffians, Inevitably Dhu al-Nun was in prison. The mighty king rides forth alone, Such an orphan pearl in the hands of children. In what? An ocean hidden in a drop, A sun concealed within a speck. A sun showed itself as a speck, And little by little unveiled its face. All the specks were annihilated in him, The world became intoxicated by him and then sober. When the pen is in the hand of a traitor, Without doubt, Mansur will be on a gallows. Since this affair and authority belong to the foolish, It became necessary that "they slay the prophets." A people who had lost the way said to the prophets, Out of foolishness, "We augur ill from you." Behold the ignorance of the Christian, seeking protection, From that Lord who was hanged! Since according to him He was crucified by the Jews, Then how can He show protection to him? Since the heart of that king was bleeding because of them, How could the protection of "And thou art among them" be? Pure gold and the goldsmith have more danger, From the treacherous counterfeiter. The Josephs are hidden from the envy of the ugly, For from the enemy, the beautiful ones live in fire. The Josephs are in the well from the deceit of their brothers, For out of envy they give Joseph to the wolves. What befell the Egyptian Joseph from envy? This envy is a huge wolf lying in ambush. Inevitably, from this wolf, the gentle Jacob, Always had fear and dread for Joseph. The manifest wolf itself did not hover around Joseph, This envy surpassed the wolves in action. This wolf showed mercy and came with a clever excuse, Saying, "We went off racing with one another." A hundred thousand wolves do not have this deceit, In the end, this wolf without a trace will be put to shame. Because the resurrection of the envious on the day of harm, Without doubt, they will be resurrected in the form of wolves. The resurrection of the greedy, carrion-eating wretch, Will be in the form of a pig on the day of reckoning. For adulterers there is a stench of the hidden parts, For wine-drinkers there is a stench of the mouth. The hidden stench that was reaching the hearts, Became sensible and visible at the resurrection. The existence of man is a forest, Beware of this existence if you are of that breath. In our existence there are thousands of wolves and pigs, Righteous and unrighteous, and good and base. The judgment belongs to that disposition which is more dominant, When gold is more than copper, it is gold. The character that is dominant over your existence, In that same image your resurrection is necessary. One hour a wolf enters into man, One hour a face like Joseph's, like the moon. It goes from breasts into breasts, From the hidden path, righteousness and hatreds. Nay, rather, from man into the ox and the ass, Goes wisdom and knowledge and skill. The stumbling horse becomes ambling and docile, The bear dances and the goat also bows. The desire of men went into the dog, Until it became a shepherd or a hunter or a guard. In the dog of the Companions, a disposition from those people, Entered, until it became a seeker of God. Every moment a species rears its head in the breast, Sometimes a demon, sometimes an angel, sometimes a wild beast and a domesticated animal. From that wondrous forest which every lion knows, There is a hidden path to the snare of the breasts. Steal a pearl from within the souls, O you who are less than a dog, from within the gnostics! Since you steal, at least steal that subtle pearl, Since you carry a burden, at least a noble one.
