بعد از آن در سر موسی حق نهفت
رازهایی گفت کان ناید به گفت

بر دل موسی سخن ها ریختند
دیدن و گفتن به هم آمیختند

چند بی خود گشت و چند آمد به خود
چند پرید از ازل سوی ابد

بعد از این گر شرح گویم ابلهیست
زانک شرح این ورای آگهیست

ور بگویم عقل ها را برکند
ور نویسم بس قلم ها بشکند

چون که موسی این عتاب از حق شنید
در بیابان در پی چوپان دوید

بر نشان پای آن سرگشته راند
گرد از پرهٔ بیابان برفشاند

گام پای مردم شوریده خود
هم ز گام دیگران پیدا بود

یک قدم چون رخ ز بالا تا نشیب
یک قدم چون پیل رفته بر وریب

گاه چون موجی بر افرازان علم
گاه چون ماهی روانه بر شکم

گاه بر خاکی نبشته حال خود
همچو رمالی که رملی بر زند

عاقبت دریافت او را و بدید
گفت مژده ده که دستوری رسید

هیچ آدابی و ترتیبی مجو
هرچه می خواهد دل تنگت بگو

کفر تو دین است و دینت نور جان
آمنی وز تو جهانی در امان

ای معاف یفعل الله ما یشا
بی محابا رو زبان را برگشا

گفت ای موسی از آن بگذشته ام
من کنون در خون دل آغشته ام

من ز سدرهٔ منتهی بگذشته ام
صد هزاران ساله زان سو رفته ام

تازیانه بر زدی اسپم بگشت
گنبدی کرد و ز گردون بر گذشت

محرم ناسوت ما لاهوت باد
آفرین بر دست و بر بازوت باد

حال من اکنون برون از گفتن است
اینچ می گویم نه احوال من است

نقش می بینی که در آیینه ای ست
نقش توست آن نقش آن آیینه نیست

دم که مرد نایی اندر نای کرد
درخور نایست نه درخورد مرد

هان و هان گر حمد گویی گر سپاس
همچو نافرجام آن چوپان شناس

حمد تو نسبت بدان گر بهترست
لیک آن نسبت به حق هم ابترست

چند گویی چون غطا برداشتند
کاین نبوده ست آنک می پنداشتند

این قبول ذکر تو از رحمت است
چون نماز مستحاضه رخصت است

با نماز او بیالوده ست خون
ذکر تو آلودهٔ تشبیه و چون

خون پلید است و به آبی می رود
لیک باطن را نجاست ها بود

کان به غیر آب لطف کردگار
کم نگردد از درون مرد کار

در سجودت کاش روگردانیی
معنی سبحان ربی دانیی

کای سجودم چون وجودم ناسزا
مر بدی را تو نکویی ده جزا

این زمین از حلم حق دارد اثر
تا نجاست برد و گل ها داد بر

تا بپوشد او پلیدی های ما
در عوض بر روید از وی غنچه ها

پس چو کافر دید کاو در داد و جود
کم تر و بی مایه تر از خاک بود

از وجود او گل و میوه نرست
جز فساد جمله پاکی ها نجست

گفت واپس رفته ام من در ذهاب
حسرتا، یا لیتنی کنت تراب

کاش از خاکی سفر نگزیدمی
همچو خاکی دانه ای می چیدمی

چون سفر کردم، مرا راه آزمود
زین سفرکردن ره آوردم چه بود؟

زان همه میلش سوی خاک است کو
در سفر سودی نبیند پیش رو

روی واپس کردنش آن حرص و آز
روی در ره کردنش صدق و نیاز

هر گیا را کش بود میل علا
در مزید است و حیات و در نما

چونک گردانید سر سوی زمین
در کمی و خشکی و نقص و غبین

میل روحت چون سوی بالا بود
در تزاید مرجعت آنجا بود

ور نگوساری سرت سوی زمین
آفلی، حق لا یحب الآفلین

English translation

After that, God placed a secret in Moses' inmost heart, He spoke secrets that cannot be spoken. Words were poured upon Moses' heart, Seeing and speaking were mixed together. Many times he lost himself, and many times came back to himself, Many times he flew from pre-eternity to eternity. If I give further explanation of this, it is foolishness, Because explaining this is beyond human awareness. And if I were to say it, it would uproot minds, And if I were to write it, it would break many pens. When Moses heard this rebuke from God, He ran into the desert after the shepherd. He drove on following the footprints of that bewildered one, Scattering dust from the skirt of the desert. The footprint of the frenzied person Is distinct from the footsteps of others. One step like a rook from top to bottom, One step like an elephant going diagonally. Sometimes raising a flag like a wave, Sometimes sliding on the belly like a fish. Sometimes writing his state upon the dust, Like a geomancer drawing lines on the sand. Finally he caught up with him and saw him, He said: 'Give glad tidings, for permission has arrived. Seek no rules or order, Say whatever your distressed heart desires. Your disbelief is religion, and your religion is the light of the soul, You are secure, and through you a world is in security. O you who are exempted! God does what He wills, Go without hesitation, open your tongue.' He (the shepherd) said: 'O Moses, I have passed beyond that, I am now soaked in the heart's blood. I have passed beyond the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary, I have gone a hundred thousand years' journey beyond it. You struck with the whip and my horse turned, It vaulted and passed beyond the sky. May our human nature be intimate with the Divine Nature, Blessings upon your hand and upon your arm! My state now is beyond speaking, That which I say is not my actual state. You see an image that is in a mirror, That is your image, it is not the image of the mirror. The breath that the piper blows into the pipe, Belongs to the pipe, not to the man.' Beware, beware, whether you offer praise or gratitude, Know it to be like the imperfect words of that shepherd. Although your praise compared to his is better, Yet that relative to God is also defective. How much you will say when they lift the veil, 'This was not what they used to imagine!' This acceptance of your remembrance is out of mercy, Just as the prayer of a menstruating woman is an indulgence. With her prayer, blood is polluted, Your dhikr is polluted with anthropomorphism and 'how's. Blood is impure and can be washed away with water, But the inward part has impurities, Which, except by the water of the Creator's grace, Are not removed from within the man of action. Would that in your prostration you would turn your face, And know the meaning of 'Glory be to my Lord'. Saying, 'O my prostration, like my existence, is unworthy, May You reward evil with goodness.' This earth has an effect of the clemency of God, So it carried away impurities and brought forth flowers. So that it might conceal our impurities, In exchange, rosebuds grow from it. So when the disbeliever saw that in bounty and generosity, He was lesser and more destitute than the dust; From his existence, no flower or fruit grew, He sought nothing but the corruption of all purities; He said, 'I have gone backwards in departure, Alas, Would that I were dust!' Would that I had not chosen to journey from the dust, Like the dust I would have gathered a grain. When I journeyed, the path tested me, What was the souvenir of this journey for me? Hence all his inclination is toward the earth, for he Sees no profit ahead on the journey. His turning back is because of that greed and avidity, His facing the path is due to sincerity and need. Every plant that has an upward inclination, Is in increase, in life, and in growth. When it turns its head toward the earth, It is in decrease, dryness, deficiency, and loss. When your soul's inclination is upward, Your return place will be there in augmentation. And if you turn your head downwards to the earth, You are setting; 'God loves not those that set.'
