Book Two - Section 72 - Mu'awiya Bringing Iblis to Confession

Text and Translation

"Why did you wake me?
You are an enemy of wakefulness, O deceiver!
Like poppy, you bring nothing but sleep;
Like wine, you carry off reason and knowledge.
I have you pinned fast—speak straight now!
I know the straight; seek no tricks.
I expect from every person only that which
He possesses in nature and habit.
I do not seek sweetness from vinegar;
I do not enlist an effeminate man as a soldier.
Like the Zoroastrians, I do not seek from an idol
Whether it be the Truth or a sign from Truth.
I do not seek the scent of musk from dung;
I do not seek dry bricks in the water of a stream.
I do not seek from Satan—who is 'other'—
That he should rouse me awake to good."
Iblīs spoke at length of deceit and treachery;
The Amīr listened to none of it—he held firm and patient.
