بر رسول حق فسونها خواندند
رخش دستان و حیل می راندند

آن رسول مهربان رحم کیش
جز تبسم جز بلی ناورد پیش

شکرهای آن جماعت یاد کرد
در اجابت قاصدان را شاد کرد

می نمود آن مکر ایشان پیش او
یک به یک زان سان که اندر شیر مو

موی را نادیده می کرد آن لطیف
شیر را شاباش می گفت آن ظریف

صد هزاران موی مکر و دمدمه
چشم خوابانید آن دم زان همه

راست می فرمود آن بحر کرم
بر شما من از شما مشفق ترم

من نشسته بر کنار آتشی
با فروغ و شعلهٔ بس ناخوشی

همچو پروانه شما آن سو دوان
هر دو دست من شده پروانه ران

چون بر آن شد تا روان گردد رسول
غیرت حق بانگ زد مشنو ز غول

کاین خبیثان مکر و حیلت کرده اند
جمله مقلوبست آنچ آورده اند

قصد ایشان جز سیه رویی نبود
خیر دین کی جست ترسا و جهود

مسجدی بر جسر دوزخ ساختند
با خدا نرد دغاها باختند

قصدشان تفریق اصحاب رسول
فضل حق را کی شناسد هر فضول

تا جهودی را ز شام اینجا کشند
که به وعظ او جهودان سرخوشند

گفت پیغامبر که آری لیک ما
بر سر راهیم و بر عزم غزا

زین سفر چون باز گردم آنگهان
سوی آن مسجد روان گردم روان

دفعشان گفت و به سوی غزو تاخت
با دغایان از دغا نردی بباخت

چون بیامد از غزا باز آمدند
چنگ اندر وعدهٔ ماضی زدند

گفت حقش ای پیمبر فاش گو
عذر را ور جنگ باشد باش گو

گفتشان بس بد درون و دشمنید
تا نگویم رازهاتان تن زنید

چون نشانی چند از اسرارشان
در بیان آورد بد شد کارشان

قاصدان زو باز گشتند آن زمان
حاش لله حاش لله دم زنان

هر منافق مصحفی زیر بغل
سوی پیغامبر بیاورد از دغل

بهر سوگندان که ایمان جنتی ست
زانک سوگند آن کژان را سنتی ست

چون ندارد مرد کژ در دین وفا
هر زمانی بشکند سوگند را

راستان را حاجت سوگند نیست
زانک ایشان را دو چشم روشنی ست

نقض میثاق و عهود از احمقی ست
حفظ ایمان و وفا کار تقی ست

گفت پیغامبر که سوگند شما
راست گیرم یا که سوگند خدا

باز سوگندی دگر خوردند قوم
مصحف اندر دست و بر لب مهر صوم

که به حق این کلام پاک راست
کان بنای مسجد از بهر خداست

اندر آنجا هیچ حیله و مکر نیست
اندر آنجا ذکر و صدق و یاربی ست

گفت پیغامبر که آواز خدا
می رسد در گوش من همچون صدا

مهر بر گوش شما بنهاد حق
تا به آواز خدا نارد سبق

نک صریح آواز حق می آیدم
همچو صاف از درد می پالایدم

همچنانکه موسی از سوی درخت
بانگ حق بشنید کای مسعودبخت

از درخت انی انا الله می شنید
با کلام انوار می آمد پدید

چون ز نور وحی در می ماندند
باز نو سوگندها می خواندند

چون خدا سوگند را خواند سپر
کی نهد اسپر ز کف پیگارگر

باز پیغامبر به تکذیب صریح
قد کذبتم گفت با ایشان فصیح

English translation

They recited spells over the Messenger of God, driving the steed of tricks and stratagems. That tender, compassionate Messenger offered nothing but smiles and assent. He mentioned the thanks of that company and, by accepting, gladdened the envoys. Their deceit showed itself before him one by one, like a hair in milk. That subtle one made as though he did not see the hair; that refined one praised the milk. At that moment he closed his eye to a hundred thousand hairs of deceit and whispering. Truly that ocean of generosity said: 'I am more compassionate toward you than you are toward yourselves. I am seated at the edge of a fire, with its glare and grievous flame; like moths you run toward that side, and both my hands have become moth-drivers.' When the Messenger was about to set out, God's jealousy cried: 'Do not listen to the ghoul! These vile ones have practiced deceit and contrivance; everything they have brought is inverted. Their aim is nothing but blackening and disgrace; when has a Christian or a Jew sought the good of the religion? They have built a mosque on the bridge of Hell and played a backgammon of fraud with God. Their aim is to divide the Messenger's companions; when does every meddler know God's grace? They want to draw a Jew from Syria here, one whose preaching delights the Jews.' The Prophet said: 'Yes, but we are on the road and resolved on campaign. When I return from this journey, then I will go toward that mosque at once.' He put them off and hastened toward the campaign; with the deceivers he played a game of deceit. When he came back from the campaign, they returned and clung to the former promise. God said to him: 'O Prophet, speak openly; tell the excuse-making to stop, even if it means a fight.' He told them: 'You are very evil within and enemies; be silent, lest I tell your secrets.' When he set out several signs of their secrets in speech, their affair turned bad. The envoys turned back from him then, saying, 'God forbid! God forbid!' Every hypocrite deceitfully brought a copy of the Qur'an under his arm to the Prophet, for the sake of oaths, for their oaths are a shield, since oath-taking is the custom of those crooked ones. Because the crooked man has no fidelity in religion, he breaks his oath at every moment. The upright have no need of an oath, for they have two seeing eyes. Breaking covenants and pledges comes from foolishness; guarding faith and keeping fidelity is the work of the pious. The Prophet said: 'Shall I take your oath as true, or God's oath?' The people swore yet another oath, Qur'an in hand and the mark of fasting on their lips: 'By the truth of this pure Word, truly the building of that mosque is for God's sake. There is no trick or deceit there; there is remembrance, truthfulness, and saying O Lord there.' The Prophet said: 'God's voice reaches my ear like a call. God has set a seal on your ears, so that God's voice gains no access there. Now the explicit voice of God comes to me; like clear liquid strained from dregs, it purifies me. Just as Moses, from the direction of the tree, heard God's call: O blessed one; from the tree he heard, Indeed, I am God, and lights appeared along with the Speech. When they were left helpless before the light of revelation, they recited fresh oaths again. Since God has called the oath a shield, when will a warrior lay the shield from his hand? Again the Prophet, in explicit denial, plainly said to them: You have lied.'
