تا یکی یاری ز یاران رسول
در دلش انکار آمد زان نکول

که چنین پیران با شیب و وقار
می‌کندشان این پیمبر شرمسار

کو کرم کو سترپوشی کو حیا
صد هزاران عیب پوشند انبیا

باز در دل زود استغفار کرد
تا نگردد ز اعتراض او روی‌زرد

شومی یاری اصحاب نفاق
کرد مؤمن را چو ایشان زشت و عاق

باز می‌زارید کای علام سر
مر مرا مگذار بر کفران مصر

دل به دستم نیست همچون دید چشم
ورنه دل را سوزمی این دم ز خشم

اندرین اندیشه خوابش در ربود
مسجد ایشانش پر سرگین نمود

سنگهاش اندر حدث جای تباه
می‌دمید از سنگها دود سیاه

دود در حلقش شد و حلقش بخست
از نهیب دود تلخ از خواب جست

در زمان در رو فتاد و می‌گریست
کای خدا اینها نشان منکریست

خلم بهتر از چنین حلم ای خدا
که کند از نور ایمانم جدا

گر بکاوی کوشش اهل مجاز
تو بتو گنده بود همچون پیاز

هر یکی از یکدگر بی مغزتر
صادقان را یک ز دیگر نغزتر

صد کمر آن قوم بسته بر قبا
بهر هدم مسجد اهل قبا

همچو آن اصحاب فیل اندر حبش
کعبه‌ای کردند حق آتش زدش

قصد کعبه ساختند از انتقام
حالشان چون شد فرو خوان از کلام

مر سیه‌رویان دین را خود جهاز
نیست الا حیلت و مکر و ستیز

هر صحابی دید زان مسجد عیان
واقعه تا شد یقینشان سر آن

واقعات ار باز گویم یک بیک
پس یقین گردد صفا بر اهل شک

لیک می‌ترسم ز کشف رازشان
نازنینانند و زیبد نازشان

شرع بی تقلید می‌پذرفته‌اند
بی محک آن نقد را بگرفته‌اند

حکمت قرآن چو ضالهٔمؤمنست
هر کسی در ضالهٔ خود موقنست

English translation

Then one of the Messenger's companions felt objection arise in his heart because of that refusal: "How can this Prophet shame such gray-haired, dignified elders? Where are generosity, fault-covering, and modesty? Prophets cover hundreds of thousands of faults." Then he quickly asked forgiveness in his heart, lest he turn pale from that objection. The ill effect of companionship with the people of hypocrisy made the believer, like them, ugly and disobedient. Again he lamented: "O Knower of secrets, do not leave me persisting in ingratitude. My heart is not in my hand, just as the eye's seeing is not; otherwise I would burn the heart this instant out of anger." In this thought sleep seized him and showed him their mosque full of dung. Its stones were in filth, in a ruined place; black smoke was rising from the stones. The smoke entered his throat and wounded it; from the terror of the bitter smoke he sprang from sleep. At once he fell on his face and wept: "O God, these are signs of denial. My phlegm is better than such forbearance, O God, which separates me from the light of faith." If you dig into the effort of the people of mere appearance, layer after layer it is rotten like an onion. Each is more without kernel than the next; among the truthful, each is finer than the next. That group had fastened a hundred belts over their robes to demolish the mosque of the people of Quba. Like those People of the Elephant in Abyssinia: they made a Kaaba, and God burned it. They set out against the Kaaba for revenge; read from the Scripture how their state became. The equipment of the black-faced in religion is nothing but trickery, deceit, and strife. Every Companion saw a manifest vision about that mosque, until its secret became certain to them. If I were to recount the visions one by one, purity would become certainty for the people of doubt. But I fear unveiling their secret; they are delicate beloved ones, and coquetry befits them. They accepted the Law without imitation; without a touchstone they accepted that coin. The wisdom of the Qur'an is the believer's lost property; everyone is certain about his own lost thing.
