آن مشرف خواطر و اسرار آن مقبل اکابر و ابرار آن سفینه بحر عشق آن سکینه کوه صدق آن ازکون فارغ شیخ ابوالحسن الصایغ رحمةالله علیه در مصر مقیم بود و از بزرگان اهل تصوف و یگانه وقت بود وبوعثمان مغربی گفتی هیچکس را نورانی تر از بویعقوب نهرجوری ندیدم و بزرگ همت ترا از ابوالحسن الصایغ.
ممشاد دینوری گفت: در بادیهٔ ابوالحسن الصایغ را دیدم نماز می کرد و آن کر کس بر سر او سایه می داشت ابوالحسن را پرسیدند از دلیل کردن شاهد بر غایب گفت: استدلال چگونه توان کرد از صفات کسی که او را مثل باشد بر آنکه او را مثل نباشد.

و ازو پرسیدند از معرفت گفت: منت دیدن است در کل احوال و عجز گزاردن شکر نعمتها به جملهٔ وجود و بیزاریست از پناه گرفتن و قوت یافتن از همه چیزها.
ازو پرسیدند که صفت مرید چیست گفت: آنست که حق تعالی فرموده است ضاقت علیهم الارض بما رحبت وضاقت علیهم انفسهم یعنی زمین بابسط و فراخنایی خود تنگست بر مریدان و تن ایشان بر ایشان تنگ گشته است گرد جهانی می طلبند بیرون هر دو عالم.

و گفت: اهل محبت بر آتش شوق که به محبوب دارند تنعم می کنند بیشتر و خوشتر ازتنعم اهل بهشت.
و گفت: دوست داشتن تو خویش راهلاک کردنست خویش را.

و گفت: احوال خود بدو نمی بود چون باستاد حدیث نفس شد و ساختن طمع گشت و این سخن پسندیده است که هرچه نفس رادر آن مدخل پدید آید آن کدورت منی تصفیهٔ آنرا تباه کند.
و گفت: تمنا وامل از فساد طبعست رحمةالله علیه.

English translation

That observer of minds and secrets, that favored of the great and the righteous, that ship of the sea of love, that peace of the mountain of truthfulness, that freed from creation, Sheikh Abu'l-Hasan al-Sayegh, may Allah have mercy on him, resided in Egypt and was of the elders of Sufism and unique in his time. Abu 'Uthman al-Maghribi used to say: 'I have seen no one more luminous than Abu Ya'qub al-Nahrjuri, and no one of greater ambition than Abu'l-Hasan al-Sayegh.' Mamshad al-Dinawari said: 'In the wilderness, I saw Abu'l-Hasan al-Sayegh praying, and a vulture was casting its shadow over him.' Abu'l-Hasan was asked about drawing inferences from the witnessed [creation] to the absent [Creator]. He said: 'How can one make an inference from the attributes of someone who has a likeness to Him who has no likeness?' And he was asked about gnosis (ma'rifat). He said: 'It is to see favor in all circumstances, the inability to render thanks for blessings with one's entire existence, and disavowing the act of seeking refuge or strength in anything [other than God].' He was asked, 'What is the attribute of a disciple (murid)?' He said: 'It is that which God Almighty has said: "the earth was straitened for them, for all its breadth, and their souls were straitened for them" [Qur'an 9:118], meaning that the earth, with its vastness and expansion, is narrow for disciples, and their bodies have become tight upon them; they seek a world outside of both realms.' And he said: 'The people of love find more and sweeter enjoyment in the fire of yearning they have for the Beloved than the people of Paradise find in the blessings of Paradise.' And he said: 'Your loving [the Beloved] is to destroy yourself.' And he said: 'One's spiritual states do not remain with Him; when it stops, it becomes the self-talk of the soul and the fabrication of greed.' And this is a commendable statement, for whatever the lower soul (nafs) enters into, the turbidity of egoism ruins its purification. And he said: 'Desire and long-term hope arise from the corruption of temperament.' May Allah have mercy on him.
