English translation

As the mother said to her child, 'If a phantom comes to you in the night, Or in a graveyard and terrifying place, You see a black phantom full of malice: Keep your heart strong and attack it! It will immediately turn its face away from you.' The child said, 'That demon-like phantom— What if its mother has told it this too? If I attack, and it leaps upon my neck, Following its mother's command, what shall I do then? You are teaching me to stand firm and alert, But that ugly phantom also has a mother! The instructor of both demon and man is That One; The victor prevails through Him, even if the enemy is few. Whichever side that Gentle One is on, For God's sake, go and be on that side!' He said, 'If through deceit it does not speak, That valiant one might know the trick. How do you know its secret? Tell the truth.' He said, 'I will sit silently before it, I will make patience a ladder to the ascent, So that I may rise: patience is the key to relief. And if in its presence there boils up from my heart A speech beyond this joy and sorrow, I will know that He sent that to me, From the innermost mind, like Canopus in Yemen. In my heart, that speech is from that auspicious side, Because from heart to heart there is a window.'
