آن یکی زن شوی خود را گفت هی
ای مروت را به یک ره کرده طی

هیچ تیمارم نمی داری چرا
تا بکی باشم درین خواری چرا

گفت شو من نفقه چاره می کنم
گرچه عورم دست و پایی می زنم

نفقه و کسوه ست واجب ای صنم
از منت این هر دو هست و نیست کم

آستین پیرهن بنمود زن
بس درشت و پر وسخ بد پیرهن

گفت از سختی تنم را می خورد
کس کسی را کسوه زین سان آورد

گفت ای زن یک سوالت می کنم
مرد درویشم همین آمد فنم

این درشتست و غلیظ و ناپسند
لیک بندیش ای زن اندیشه مند

این درشت و زشت تر یا خود طلاق
این ترا مکروه تر یا خود فراق

هم چنان ای خواجهٔ تشنیع زن
از بلا و فقر و از رنج و محن

لا شک این ترک هوا تلخی دهست
لیک از تلخی بعد حق بهست

گر جهاد و صوم سختست و خشن
لیک این بهتر ز بعد ممتحن

رنج کی ماند دمی که ذوالمنن
گویدت چونی تو ای رنجور من

ور نگوید کت نه آن فهم و فن است
لیک آن ذوق تو پرسش کردنست

آن ملیحان که طبیبان دل اند
سوی رنجوران به پرسش مایل اند

وز حذر از ننگ و از نامی کنند
چاره ای سازند و پیغامی کنند

ورنه در دلشان بود آن مفتکر
نیست معشوقی ز عاشق بی خبر

ای تو جویای نوادر داستان
هم فسانهٔ عشق بازان را بخوان

بس بجوشیدی درین عهد مدید
ترک جوشی هم نگشتی ای قدید

دیده ای عمری تو داد و داوری
وانگه از نادیدگان ناشی تری

هر که شاگردیش کرد استاد شد
تو سپس تر رفته ای ای کور لد

خود نبود از والدینت اختبار
هم نبودت عبرت از لیل و نهار

English translation

A certain woman said to her husband, 'Hey! O you who have entirely abandoned generosity! Why do you not take care of me at all? How long must I remain in this wretchedness, why?' The husband said, 'I am managing the maintenance. Although I am destitute, I am moving my hands and feet [struggling]. Maintenance and clothing are obligatory, O idol! You have both of these from me, and they are not lacking.' The woman showed the sleeve of her shirt; the shirt was very coarse and full of dirt. She said, 'Because of its roughness, it eats away my body; does anyone bring such clothing for anyone?' He said, 'O woman, I ask you one question; I am a poor man, this is my capability. This is coarse and thick and unpleasing, but think about it, O thoughtful woman! Is this coarser and uglier, or divorce? Is this more hateful to you, or separation?' Likewise, O Master who utters reproaches, out of affliction and poverty and from pain and trials, Without doubt, this abandoning of desire imparts bitterness, but it is better than the bitterness of distance from God. If holy war and fasting are hard and rough, still, this is better than being distant from the Examiner. How does pain remain the moment the Lord of Bounty says to you, 'How are you, O My afflicted one?' And if He does not say it, as you lack that understanding and skill, yet your inner delight is the result of His inquiring. Those charming ones who are the physicians of the heart are inclined toward the sick to inquire after them. And out of caution for reputation and name they act, they devise a remedy and send a message. Otherwise, that thought is in their hearts; no beloved is unaware of the lover. O you who seek rare tales, read also the story of the lovers. You have boiled enough in this long period, yet you have not even become half-cooked, O dried meat! You have seen justice and judgment for a lifetime, and yet you are more ignorant than those who have seen nothing. Whoever became an apprentice became a master; you have gone further backward, O obstinate blind man! Was there no test for you from your parents? Was there no lesson for you from the night and day?
