ای بسا مخلص که نالد در دعا
تا رود دود خلوصش بر سما

تا رود بالای این سقف برین
بوی مجمر از انین المذنبین

پس ملایک با خدا نالند زار
کای مجیب هر دعا وی مستجار

بندهٔ مؤمن تضرع می کند
او نمی داند به جز تو مستند

تو عطا بیگانگان را می دهی
از تو دارد آرزو هر مشتهی

حق بفرماید که نه از خواری اوست
عین تاخیر عطا یاری اوست

حاجت آوردش ز غفلت سوی من
آن کشیدش مو کشان در کوی من

گر بر آرم حاجتش او وا رود
هم در آن بازیچه مستغرق شود

گرچه می نالد به جان « یا مستجار »
دل شکسته سینه خسته گو بزار

خوش همی آید مرا آواز او
وآن خدایا گفتن و آن راز او

وانک اندر لابه و در ماجرا
می فریباند به هر نوعی مرا

طوطیان و بلبلان را از پسند
از خوش آوازی قفس در می کنند

زاغ را و چغد را اندر قفس
کی کنند این خود نیامد در قصص

پیش شاهد باز چون آید دو تن
آن یکی کمپیر و دیگر خوش ذقن

هر دو نان خواهند او زوتر فطیر
آرد و کمپیر را گوید که گیر

وآن دگر را که خوش استش قد و خد
کی دهد نان بل به تاخیر افکند

گویدش بنشین زمانی بی گزند
که به خانه نان تازه می پزند

چون رسد آن نان گرمش بعد کد
گویدش بنشین که حلوا می رسد

هم برین فن داردارش می کند
وز ره پنهان شکارش می کند

که مرا کاریست با تو یک زمان
منتظر می باش ای خوب جهان

بی مرادی مومنان از نیک و بد
تو یقین می دان که بهر این بود

English translation

O many a sincere one who wails in prayer Until the smoke of his sincerity ascends to heaven Until the scent of the censer from the wails of the sinners Reaches the top of this highest roof. Then the angels wail bitterly to God, Saying, 'O Answerer of every prayer, O You whose protection is sought, The believing servant is making earnest supplication; He knows no support other than You. You bestow gifts upon strangers; Every desirer has his longing fulfilled by You.' The Truth (God) says: 'It is not because of his slight worth; The very delay in bestowing the gift is a help to him. His need brought him, dragging him by the hair, from heedlessness to My street. If I satisfy his need, he will go back, And become completely absorbed in that same plaything. Although he wails from his soul, "O You whose protection is sought!" Tell him to wail with a broken heart and a wounded breast. His voice is pleasing to Me, And his saying "O God" and his intimate converse; And that in entreaty and in dispute He is coaxing Me in every way. Parrots and nightingales are put into cages Because they are pleasing and have sweet voices. The crow and the owl—when do they put them in a cage? Has this not come down in the stories? When two people come before a handsome person, One of them an old woman, and the other having a beautiful chin, Both of them want bread; he will quickly Bring unleavened bread and say to the old woman, "Take this!" And the other one, whose figure and cheek are pleasing, When will he give him bread? Nay, he will delay it. He will say to him, "Sit for a while without harm, For they are baking fresh bread in the house." When that hot bread reaches him after some toil, He will say to him, "Sit, for the halva is coming." He keeps putting him off with this artifice, And from a hidden path he hunts him, Saying, "I have some business with you for a moment; Wait in expectation, O beauty of the world!" The unfulfilled desires of the believers, for good and bad, Know for certain that it is for this reason.'
