He was astonished: the wisdom of a dog's bark is watchfulness, but barking inside the mother's womb is not watchfulness, nor can it be for seeking help or milk, etc., and there are none of those benefits there. When he came to himself, he communed with the Divine Presence, 'And none knows its interpretation except Allah' (Qur'an 3:7). The answer came: 'That is the state of a group who have not emerged from behind the veil, whose heart's eye is not opened, yet they claim insight and deliver discourses, which bring no strength or help to them, nor guidance or growth to their listeners.'

English translation

A certain person was seeing a vision during his forty-day retreat, On a path, there was a pregnant female dog. Suddenly he heard the voice of puppies, Though the puppy inside the womb was unseen. Those cries seemed extremely strange to him: How could a puppy inside the womb utter a call? A puppy whimpering inside the womb— Has anyone ever seen such a thing in the world? When he emerged from the vision and came to his senses, His astonishment increased moment by moment. In the retreat there was no one to untie this knot, Except the court of God, Mighty and Majestic. He said, 'O Lord, because of this dilemma and inner dialogue, I have been held back in my retreat from Your remembrance. Unfold my wings so that I may fly, And enter the garden of remembrance and the apple-orchard.' At that moment, the voice of the unseen herald came to him: 'Know that this is an allegory for the boasting of the ignorant, Who have not emerged from the veil and the curtain, Yet with closed eyes, they have become useless talkers. The bark of a dog inside the womb is useless; It is neither a stimulus for the hunt nor a night watchman. No wolf is seen that it might deter, No thief is seen that it might repel. Out of greed and the desire for leadership, They are dull of sight yet bold in boasting. Driven by the desire for customers and keeping the market hot, Without insight, they have stepped into difficulties. Having not seen the moon, they point out its signs, And thereby lead the villager astray. For the sake of a customer, in describing the moon, They recount a hundred unseen signs for the sake of status. The true Customer Who brings profit is but One, Yet they have doubt and suspicion about Him. Out of desire for cheap customers, This group has squandered the [true] Customer. Our Customer is God—'Indeed, Allah has purchased'; Lo, rise above the grief of seeking any other customer! Seek the Customer Who is seeking you, Who is your origin and your end. Behold, do not grasp at every customer; To play at love with two beloveds is bad. You will find no profit or capital in them, if their intellect Has no real worth of reason and understanding. He himself is not worth half a horseshoe, And you go and offer him rubies and pearls! Greed has made you blind and will deprive you; The devil will make you stoned and rejected like himself, Just as the Companions of the Elephant and the people of Lot Were stoned and rejected by that wrathful One. The patient ones found the [true] Customer, Since they did not rush toward every cheap customer. Whoever turned their face away from that [true] Customer Was deprived of good fortune, prosperity, and eternal life. Regret remained upon the greedy forever, Just like the envious state of the people of Darwan.'
