Original content

English translation

That one was eating bread made of millet. A beggar asked, 'Why do you have such greed for this?' He said, 'When hunger is folded double with patience, barley bread becomes halva (sweetmeat) before me. So I am able to eat halva all the time; when I practice patience, I am patient indeed.' Indeed, hunger is not given to just anyone, for this is a pastureland beyond measure. Hunger is given only to the chosen ones of God, so that they may become powerful lions through hunger. Why would they give hunger to every rude beggar? Since fodder is not scarce, they place it before him, saying: 'Eat, since you are worthy of only this; you are not a waterfowl, you are a bird of bread.'
