دفتر پنجم - بخش ۸۹ - در بیان آنک دعای عارف واصل و درخواست او از حق هم‌چو درخواست حقست از خویشتن کی کنت له سمعا و بصرا و لسانا و یدا و قوله و ما رمیت اذ رمیت و لکن الله رمی و آیات و اخبار و آثار درین بسیارست و شرح سبب ساختن حق تا مجرم را گوش گرفته بتوبهٔ نصوح آورد / Book Five - Section 89 - In explanation that the prayer of the attained gnostic and his request from God is like the request of God from Himself, as in 'I am his hearing, his sight, his tongue, and his hand,' and His words: 'You did not throw when you threw, but it was Allah who threw,' and there are many verses, traditions, and traces regarding this; and the explanation of the cause devised by the Divine to take the sinner by the ear and bring him to sincere repentance

آن دعا از هفت گردون در گذشت
کار آن مسکین به آخر خوب گشت

که آن دعای شیخ نه چون هر دعاست
فانی است و گفت او گفت خداست

چون خدا از خود سؤال و کد کند
پس دعای خویش را چون رد کند

یک سبب انگیخت صنع ذوالجلال
که رهانیدش ز نفرین و وبال

اندر آن حمام پر می کرد طشت
گوهری از دختر شه یاوه گشت

گوهری از حلقه های گوش او
یاوه گشت و هر زنی در جست و جو

پس در حمام را بستند سخت
تا بجویند اولش در پیچ رخت

رختها جستند و آن پیدا نشد
دزد گوهر نیز هم رسوا نشد

پس به جد جستن گرفتند از گزاف
در دهان و گوش و اندر هر شکاف

در شکاف تحت و فوق و هر طرف
جست و جو کردند دری خوش صدف

بانگ آمد که همه عریان شوید
هر که هستید ار عجوز و گر نوید

یک به یک را حاجبه جستن گرفت
تا پدید آید گهردانه شگفت

آن نصوح از ترس شد در خلوتی
روی زرد و لب کبود از خشیتی

پیش چشم خویش او می دید مرگ
رفت و می لرزید او مانند برگ

گفت یارب بارها برگشته ام
توبه ها و عهدها بشکسته ام

کرده ام آنها که از من می سزید
تا چنین سیل سیاهی در رسید

نوبت جستن اگر در من رسد
وه که جان من چه سختیها کشد

در جگر افتاده استم صد شرر
در مناجاتم ببین بوی جگر

این چنین اندوه کافر را مباد
دامن رحمت گرفتم داد داد

کاشکی مادر نزادی مر مرا
یا مرا شیری بخوردی در چرا

ای خدا آن کن که از تو می سزد
که ز هر سوراخ مارم می گزد

جان سنگین دارم و دل آهنین
ورنه خون گشتی درین رنج و حنین

وقت تنگ آمد مرا و یک نفس
پادشاهی کن مرا فریاد رس

گر مرا این بار ستاری کنی
توبه کردم من ز هر ناکردنی

توبه ام بپذیر این بار دگر
تا ببندم بهر توبه صد کمر

من اگر این بار تقصیری کنم
پس دگر مشنو دعا و گفتنم

این همی زارید و صد قطره روان
که در افتادم به جلاد و عوان

تا نمیرد هیچ افرنگی چنین
هیچ ملحد را مبادا این حنین

نوحه ها می کرد او بر جان خویش
روی عزراییل دیده پیش پیش

ای خدا و ای خدا چندان بگفت
که آن در و دیوار با او گشت جفت

در میان یارب و یارب بد او
بانگ آمد از میان جست و جو

English translation

That prayer passed beyond the seven heavens, and the affair of that poor soul turned out well in the end. For the prayer of the Sheikh is not like any other prayer; he is annihilated (in God), and his speech is the speech of God. When God makes petition and request of Himself, how then should He reject His own prayer? The artistry of the Lord of Majesty brought about a cause which delivered him from curse and misery. Inside that bathhouse, he was filling the basin, when a pearl belonging to the King's daughter went missing. A pearl from her earrings was lost, and every woman set to searching. So they shut the door of the bathhouse tightly so that they might first search for it in the folds of the clothes. They searched the clothes, and it was not found, nor was the thief of the pearl exposed. Then they began to search in earnest and at random, in mouths, ears, and in every cleft. In the clefts below and above and on every side, they searched for that pearl of fine shell. A cry went up: 'Undress, all of you, whoever you are, whether old woman or young maiden!' One by one, the female guard began to search them, so that the wondrous pearl-bead might appear. That Nasuh, out of fear, withdrew into a private corner, his face pale and his lips blue with dread. Before his very eyes he was seeing death, he walked and trembled like a leaf. He said: 'O Lord, many times have I turned back, and broken my repentances and covenants. I have done that which was worthy of me, until such a black flood has arrived. If the turn of searching should reach me, oh, what hardships my soul will suffer! A hundred sparks have fallen into my liver, behold the scent of burning liver in my intimate prayer. May even an infidel never have such grief! I have clutched the skirt of Mercy, help, help! Would that my mother had never given birth to me, or that a lion had devoured me in the pasture! O God, do that which is worthy of You, for a snake is biting me from every hole. I have a heavy soul and an iron heart, otherwise it would have turned to blood in this pain and lamentation. Time has become short for me, and I have but a single breath; act like a King, come to my rescue! If this time You act as the Concealer of my sins, I repent of every forbidden deed. Accept my repentance this once more, so that I may gird a hundred belts for the sake of repentance. If this time I commit any transgression, then do not hear my prayer and speech ever again.' Thus he was weeping bitterly, a hundred drops flowing, 'For I have fallen into the hands of the executioner and assistant; may no European die like this, may no heretic ever have this lamentation!' He was uttering laments over his own soul, seeing the face of Azrael right before him. 'O God, O God!' he cried out so much that the doors and walls joined in with him. He was in the midst of 'O Lord, O Lord!' when a cry arose from the midst of the search...
