Book Five - Section 128 - A Muslim Inviting a Magian

Original content

English translation

A man said to a Magian (Zoroastrian): 'O so-and-so, Come, become a Muslim and be among the believers!' He said: 'If God wills, I shall become a believer, And if His grace increases, I shall also become one of certitude.' The man said: 'God indeed wills your faith, So that your soul may escape from the clutches of Hell; But your sinister carnal soul (ego) and that ugly Satan Are dragging you toward unbelief and the pagan temple.' The Magian said: 'O fair-minded one, since they are dominant, I will be the ally of the one who is powerful. I can only be the companion of him who is victorious; I must fall on the side where the dominant force pulls. Since God desired mighty sincerity from me, Of what use was His desire when it did not prevail? The carnal soul and Satan carried out their own will, And that divine favor was vanquished, crushed, and died. Suppose you built a castle or a palace, And in it you set up a hundred beautiful designs; You wanted that place of goodness to be a mosque, But another came and turned it into a pagan temple. Or suppose you wove a piece of coarse linen, In order to fashion a fine cloak to wear; You wanted a cloak, but your opponent, out of malice, In spite of you, turned that linen into trousers. He was humiliated; what is the fault of this linen? And who is there who is not subdued by the victor? When someone rules over him against his will, And plants a thorn-bush in his domain and home, Is the owner of the house of such low state That such absolute authority is exercised over him? I too would become worn out and threadbare, whether fresh or new, If I were to become the friend of such humiliation. Since the desire of the carnal soul has become the one whose aid is sought, Then 'Whatever God wills, comes to pass' is but a mockery! Though I be the shame of the Magians or an unbeliever, I am not one to harbor such a suspicion of God: That someone, against His will and in spite of Him, Should exercise authority and seek command in His kingdom, And seize His realm in such a manner That the Creator of breath cannot even draw a breath! He wants and needs to repel him, Yet the devil increases His grief every moment. One must become the servant of this devil, Since he is dominant in every gathering. Lest Satan harbor a grudge against me, And then how will the Lord of Bounties take my hand? The one who wills, his desire becomes reality; Through whom else, then, can my affairs prosper?'
