گفت یزدان زود عزراییل را
که ببین آن خاک پر تخییل را

آن ضعیف زال ظالم را بیاب
مشت خاکی هین بیاور با شتاب

رفت عزراییل سرهنگ قضا
سوی کره خاک بهر اقتضا

خاک بر قانون نفیر آغاز کرد
داد سوگندش بسی سوگند خورد

کای غلام خاص و ای حمال عرش
ای مطاع الامر اندر عرش و فرش

رو به حق رحمت رحمن فرد
رو به حق آنک با تو لطف کرد

حق شاهی که جز او معبود نیست
پیش او زاری کس مردود نیست

گفت نتوانم بدین افسون که من
رو بتابم ز آمر سر و علن

گفت آخر امر فرمود او به حلم
هر دو امرند آن بگیر از راه علم

گفت آن تاویل باشد یا قیاس
در صریح امر کم جو التباس

فکر خود را گر کنی تاویل به
که کنی تاویل این نامشتبه

دل همی سوزد مرا بر لابه ات
سینه ام پر خون شد از شورابه ات

نیستم بی رحم بل زان هر سه پاک
رحم بیشستم ز درد دردناک

گر طبانجه می زنم من بر یتیم
ور دهد حلوا به دستش آن حلیم

این طبانجه خوشتر از حلوای او
ور شود غره به حلوا وای او

بر نفیر تو جگر می سوزدم
لیک حق لطفی همی آموزدم

لطف مخفی در میان قهرها
در حدث پنهان عقیق بی بها

قهر حق بهتر ز صد حلم منست
منع کردن جان ز حق جان کندنست

بدترین قهرش به از حلم دو کون
نعم رب العالمین و نعم عون

لطف های مضمر اندر قهر او
جان سپردن جان فزاید بهر او

هین رها کن بدگمانی و ضلال
سر قدم کن چونک فرمودت تعال

آن تعال او تعالی ها دهد
مستی و جفت و نهالی ها دهد

باری آن امر سنی را هیچ هیچ
من نیارم کرد وهن و پیچ پیچ

این همه بشنید آن خاک نژند
زان گمان بد بدش در گوش بند

باز از نوعی دگر آن خاک پست
لابه و سجده همی کرد او چو مست

گفت نه برخیز نبود زین زیان
من سر و جان می نهم رهن و ضمان

لابه مندیش و مکن لابه دگر
جز بدان شاه رحیم دادگر

بنده فرمانم نیارم ترک کرد
امر او کز بحر انگیزید گرد

جز از آن خلاق گوش و چشم و سر
نشنوم از جان خود هم خیر و شر

گوش من از گفت غیر او کرست
او مرا از جان شیرین جان ترست

جان ازو آمد نیامد او ز جان
صدهزاران جان دهم او رایگان

جان کی باشد کش گزینم بر کریم
کیک چه بود که بسوزم زو گلیم

من ندانم خیر الا خیر او
صم و بکم و عمی من از غیر او

گوش من کرست از زاری کنان
که منم در کف او هم چون سنان

English translation

God said swiftly to Azrael, 'Go, look at that earth full of fantasy. Find that weak, old, unjust one; bring a handful of earth, behold, with haste.' Azrael, the commander of destiny, went toward the globe of earth for the requirement. The earth, according to its custom, began to wail; it gave him many oaths, swearing: 'O special servant and O bearer of the Throne, O one whose command is obeyed in heaven and earth! Go, for the sake of the mercy of the unique Compassionate One! Go, for the sake of Him Who showed grace to you! By the right of the King, besides Whom there is no deity, in Whose presence no one's weeping is rejected!' He said: 'I cannot, by this spell, turn my face away from the Commander of secrets and open matters.' It said: 'After all, He commanded with forbearance; both are His commands, grasp that through knowledge.' He said: 'That would be interpretation or analogy; in an explicit command, seek less ambiguity. It is better if you interpret your own thought, rather than interpreting this unambiguous command. My heart burns for your pleading; my breast is filled with blood from your salty tears. I am not merciless, but rather, compared to those other three pure ones, my mercy is greater for this painful pain. If I strike a slap on the orphan's face, or if that forbearing one gives sweetmeat into his hand— this slap is sweeter than his sweetmeat; and if he is deceived by the sweetmeat, woe to him! My liver burns because of your wailing, but God teaches me a grace. A hidden grace amidst wrath; a priceless carnelian hidden in excrement. God's wrath is better than a hundred forbearances of mine; withholding the soul from God is the agony of death. His worst wrath is better than the forbearance of both worlds; how excellent is the Lord of the worlds, and how excellent a Helper! Graces are concealed in His wrath; yielding the soul for His sake increases the soul. Behold, abandon evil suspicion and error; make your head a foot since He said to you: 'Come!' His 'Come' bestows heights; it gives ecstasy, and a mate, and cushions. In short, to that sublime command, I can never bring any weakness or evasion.' All this did that miserable earth hear, but because of its evil suspicion, its ears were stopped. Again, in another manner, that lowly earth began to plead and prostrate like one intoxicated. He said: 'No, arise! No harm will come from this; I pledge my head and soul as surety and guarantee. Think not of pleading, and make no more entreaties except to that Merciful, Just King. I am a servant of the Command, I cannot abandon His command, which raises dust from the sea. Except from that Creator of ear, eye, and head, I do not hear even good or evil from my own soul. My ear is deaf to the words of any other than Him; He is dearer to me than sweet soul itself. The soul came from Him, He did not come from the soul; I would give a hundred thousand souls to Him freely. What is the soul that I should choose it over the Generous One? What is a flea that I should burn my blanket because of it? I know no good except His good; I am deaf, dumb, and blind to any other than Him. My ear is deaf to those who wail, for I am like a spearhead in His hand.'
