شیخ می شد با مریدی بی درنگ
سوی شهری نان بدانجا بود تنگ

ترس جوع و قحط در فکر مرید
هر دمی می گشت از غفلت پدید

شیخ آگه بود و واقف از ضمیر
گفت او را چند باشی در زحیر

از برای غصه نان سوختی
دیده صبر و توکل دوختی

تو نه ای زان نازنینان عزیز
که ترا دارند بی جوز و مویز

جوع رزق جان خاصان خداست
کی زبون هم چو تو گیج گداست

باش فارغ تو از آنها نیستی
که درین مطبخ تو بی نان بیستی

کاسه بر کاسه ست و نان بر نان مدام
از برای این شکم خواران عام

چون بمیرد می رود نان پیش پیش
کای ز بیم بی نوایی کشته خویش

تو برفتی ماند نان برخیز گیر
ای بکشته خویش را اندر زحیر

هین توکل کن ملرزان پا و دست
رزق تو بر تو ز تو عاشق ترست

عاشقست و می زند او مول مول
که ز بی صبریت داند ای فضول

گر تو را صبری بدی رزق آمدی
خویشتن چون عاشقان بر تو زدی

این تب لرزه ز خوف جوع چیست
در توکل سیر می تانند زیست

English translation

The Sheikh was traveling with a disciple without delay, Toward a city where bread was scarce. Fear of hunger and famine in the disciple's mind Was appearing at every moment out of heedlessness. The Sheikh was aware and conscious of his inner thoughts; He said to him: 'How long will you remain in distress? For the sake of grief over bread, you burned; You have sewn shut the eyes of patience and trust (tawakkul). You are not of those precious, beloved ones Whom they keep without nuts and raisins. Hunger is the spiritual sustenance of the elect of God; How could it be the lot of a bewildered beggar like you? Be at ease! You are not of those Who would remain without bread in this kitchen. Bowl is upon bowl, and bread is upon bread continuously, For these common gluttons. When he dies, the bread goes on before him, Saying: 'O you who have killed yourself from fear of destitution! You passed away, while the bread remained. Arise and take it, O you who have killed yourself in distress!' Behold! Trust in God, do not tremble in your feet and hands; Your daily sustenance is more in love with you than you are with yourself. It is in love and it hovers around, Because it knows of your impatience, O meddlesome one! If you had patience, sustenance would come; It would throw itself upon you like lovers. What is this shivering fever from the fear of hunger? In trust (tawakkul), one can live fully satisfied.'
