دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۱ - در بیان آنک نور خود از اندرون شخص منوّر بی‌آنک فعلی و قولی بیان کند گواهی دهد بر نور وی؛ در بیان آنک آن‌ نور خود را از اندرون سرّ عارف ظاهر کند بر خلقان بی‌فعل عارف و بی‌قول عارف افزون از آنک به قول و فعل او ظاهر شود، چنانک آفتاب بلند شود بانگ خروس و اعلام مؤذن و علامات دیگر حاجت نیاید / Book Five - Section 11 - Explaining how the light itself from within an enlightened person bears witness to their light without the need for action or speech; explaining how that light manifests itself to creation from the inner secret of the gnostic without the gnostic's action or speech, far more than it would manifest through their words and actions, just as when the sun rises high, there is no need for the rooster's crow, the muezzin's call, or other signs.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۶ - تمثیل لوح محفوظ و ادراک عقل هر کسی از آن لوح آنک امر و قسمت و مقدور هر روزهٔ ویست هم چون ادراک جبرئیل علیه‌السلام هر روزی از لوح اعظم عقل مثال جبرئیلست و نظر او به تفکر به سوی غیبی که معهود اوست در تفکر و اندیشهٔ کیفیت معاش و بیرون شو کارهای هر روزینه مانند نظر جبرئیلست در لوح و فهم کردن او از لوح / Book Five - Section 16 - The allegory of the Preserved Tablet (Lauh-i Mahfuz) and the perception of each person's intellect from that tablet, which contains their daily command, portion, and destiny, just like the daily perception of Gabriel, peace be upon him, from the Greatest Tablet. The intellect is like Gabriel, and its gaze of contemplation toward the unseen which is habitual to it, in thinking and contemplating the quality of livelihood and the exit-way of daily affairs, is like Gabriel's gaze at the Tablet and his understanding of it.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۲۱ - در بیان آنک لطف حق را همه کس داند و قهر حق را همه کس داند و همه از قهر حق گریزانند و به لطف حق در آویزان اما حق تعالی قهرها را در لطف پنهان کرد و لطفها را در قهر پنهان کرد نعل بازگونه و تلبیس و مکر الله بود تا اهل تمیز و ینظر به نور الله از حالی‌بینان و ظاهربینان جدا شوند کی لِیَبْلُوَکُمْ أَیُّکُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلاً / Book Five - Section 21 - Explaining that everyone knows the grace of God and everyone knows the wrath of God, and everyone runs away from God's wrath and clings to God's grace, but God Almighty hid wraths inside grace and hid graces inside wrath. This was a reversed horseshoe (deception), a disguise, and the stratagem of God so that those of discernment who see with the light of God may be separated from those who see only the immediate state and the outward appearance, so that 'He may test you as to which of you is best in deed.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۲۲ - تفاوت عقول در اصل فطرت خلاف معتزله کی ایشان گویند در اصل عقول جزوی برابرند این افزونی و تفاوت از تعلم است و ریاضت و تجربه / Book Five - Section 22 - The difference of intellects in original nature, contrary to the Mu'tazilites who say that in origin, particular intellects are equal, and that this increase and difference comes from learning, discipline, and experience

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۲۳ - حکایت آن اعرابی کی سگ او از گرسنگی می‌مرد و انبان او پر نان و بر سگ نوحه می‌کرد و شعر می‌گفت و می‌گریست و سر و رو می‌زد و دریغش می‌آمد لقمه‌ای از انبان به سگ دادن / Book Five - Section 23 - The Story of that Arab whose dog was dying of hunger while his bag was full of bread, and he was mourning over the dog, reciting poetry, weeping, beating his head and face, yet begrudged giving a single morsel from his bag to the dog

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۲۶ - قصهٔ آن حکیم کی دید طاوسی را کی پر زیبای خود را می‌کند به منقار و می‌انداخت و تن خود را کل و زشت می‌کرد از تعجب پرسید کی دریغت نمی‌آید گفت می‌آید اما پیش من جان از پر عزیزتر است و این پر عدوی جان منست / Book Five - Section 26 - The Story of the Sage Who Saw a Peacock Plucking Out its Beautiful Feathers with its Beak and Throwing Them Away, Making its Body Bald and Ugly, and out of Wonder Asked, 'Do you not feel regret?' The Peacock replied, 'I do, but to me my soul is dearer than my feathers, and these feathers are the enemy of my life.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۳۵ - در بیان آنک ما سوی الله هر چیزی آکل و ماکولست هم‌چون آن مرغی کی قصد صید ملخ می‌کرد و به صید ملخ مشغول می‌بود و غافل بود از باز گرسنه کی از پس قفای او قصد صید او داشت اکنون ای آدمی صیاد آکل از صیاد و آکل خود آمن مباش اگر چه نمی‌بینیش به نظر چشم به نظر دلیل و عبرتش می‌بین تا چشم نیز باز شدن / Book Five - Section 35 - Explaining that everything besides God is both consumer and consumed, like that bird which intended to hunt a locust and was busy hunting the locust, oblivious to the hungry falcon behind its back which intended to hunt it. Now, O human hunter and consumer, do not feel secure from your own hunter and consumer, even if you do not see him with your physical eye, see him with the eye of proof and contemplation so that the physical eye also opens.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۳۹ - قصهٔ محبوس شدن آن آهوبچه در آخر خران و طعنهٔ آن خران ببر آن غریب گاه به جنگ و گاه به تسخر و مبتلی گشتن او به کاه خشک کی غذای او نیست و این صفت بندهٔ خاص خداست میان اهل دنیا و اهل هوا و شهوت کی الاسلام بدا غریبا و سیعود غریبا فطوبی للغرباء صدق رسول الله / Book Five - Section 39 - The Story of the Fawn Imprisoned in the Stable of Asses, and the Taunts of Those Asses at That Stranger, Sometimes in Fight and Sometimes in Mockery; and Its Becoming Afflicted with Dry Straw Which Is Not Its Food; and This Is the Attribute of the Special Servant of God Among the People of the World and the People of Passion and Desire, since 'Islam began as a stranger and will return as a stranger, so blessed are the strangers.' The Apostle of God spoke truly.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۴۴ - تفسیر خلقنا الانسان فی احسن تقویم ثم رددناه اسفل سافلین و تفسیر و من نعمره ننکسه فی الخلق / Book Five - Section 44 - Commentary on 'We created man in the best of statures, then We reduced him to the lowest of the low' and Commentary on 'And whomever We grant long life, We reverse in creation'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۴۷ - در تفسیر قول مصطفی علیه‌السلام لا بد من قرین یدفن معک و هو حی و تدفن معه و انت میت ان کان کریما اکرمک و ان کان لیما اسلمک و ذلک القرین عملک فاصلحه ما استطعت صدق رسول‌الله / Book Five - Section 47 - Concerning the Commentary on the Saying of Mustafa (Muhammad), Peace Be Upon Him: 'There must be a companion buried with you who is alive while you are buried with him and you are dead. If he is noble, he will honor you; and if he is base, he will surrender (or betray) you. And that companion is your action (deed); so rectify it as much as you can.' The Prophet of God spoke the truth.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۴۹ - در تفسیر قول مصطفی علیه‌السلام من جعل الهموم هما واحدا کفاه الله سائر همومه و من تفرقت به الهموم لا یبالی الله فی ای واد اهلکه / Book Five - Section 49 - On the Interpretation of the Saying of the Chosen One [Prophet Muhammad], Peace Be Upon Him: 'Whosoever makes all his cares into a single care, God will suffice him for all his other cares; and whosoever has his cares divided, God does not care in which valley He destroys him.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۰ - در معنی این بیت «گر راه روی راه برت بگشایند ور نیست شوی بهستیت بگرایند» / Book Five - Section 50 - On the Meaning of This Verse: 'If you are a wayfarer, the way will be opened for you; and if you become naught, they will lead you to existence.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۱ - قصهٔ آن شخص کی دعوی پیغامبری می‌کرد گفتندش چه خورده‌ای کی گیج شده‌ای و یاوه می‌گویی گفت اگر چیزی یافتمی کی خوردمی نه گیج شدمی و نه یاوه گفتمی کی هر سخن نیک کی با غیر اهلش گویند یاوه گفته باشند اگر چه در آن یاوه گفتن مامورند / Book Five - Section 51 - The Story of That Person Who Claimed to be a Prophet; They Said to Him, 'What Have You Eaten That You Have Become Dizzy and Are Talking Nonsense?' He Said, 'If I Had Found Something to Eat, I Would Neither Have Been Dizzy Nor Have Talked Nonsense; For Every Good Word Spoken to Someone Who is Unworthy of It is Considered Nonsense, Even If One is Commanded to Speak It.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۲ - سبب عداوت عام و بیگانه زیستن ایشان به اولیاء خدا کی بحقشان می‌خوانند و با آب حیات ابدی / Book Five - Section 52 - On the Cause of the Hostility of the Common People and Their Living as Strangers to the Saints of God Who Call Them to the Truth and to the Water of Eternal Life

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۳ - در بیان آنک مرد بدکار چون متمکن شود در بدکاری و اثر دولت نیکوکاران ببیند شیطان شود و مانع خیر گردد از حسد هم‌چون شیطان کی خرمن سوخته همه را خرمن سوخته خواهد أَرَأَیْتَ الَّذي یَنْهی عَبْداً إِذا صَلّی / Book Five - Section 53 - In Explanation That When an Evil-Doer Becomes Established in Evil-Doing and Sees the Fortune of the Righteous, He Becomes a Devil and Obstructs Goodness Out of Envy, Just Like Satan Who, Having His Own Harvest Burnt, Wants Everyone's Harvest to Be Burnt: 'Have you seen him who forbids a servant when he prays?'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۶ - داستان آن عاشق کی با معشوق خود برمی‌شمرد خدمتها و وفاهای خود را و شبهای دراز تتجافی جنوبهم عن المضاجع را و بی‌نوایی و جگر تشنگی روزهای دراز را و می‌گفت کی من جزین خدمت نمی‌دانم اگر خدمت دیگر هست مرا ارشاد کن کی هر چه فرمایی منقادم اگر در آتش رفتن است چون خلیل علیه‌السلام و اگر در دهان نهنگ دریا فتادنست چون یونس علیه‌السلام و اگر هفتاد بار کشته شدن است چون جرجیس علیه‌السلام و اگر از گریه نابینا شدن است چون شعیب علیه‌السلام و وفا و جانبازی انبیا را علیهم‌السلام شمار نیست و جواب گفتن معشوق او را / Book Five - Section 56 - The Story of the lover who enumerated his services and faithfulness to his beloved, and the long nights of 'their sides forsaking their couches', and his destitution and the parching thirst of his long days, saying, 'I know no service other than this; if there is another service, guide me, for I am submissive to whatever you command, whether it be entering into the fire like Abraham, peace be upon him, or falling into the mouth of the sea-whale like Jonah, peace be upon him, or being slain seventy times like George, peace be upon him, or becoming blind from weeping like Shuaib, peace be upon him—for there is no count to the faithfulness and self-sacrifice of the prophets, peace be upon them'—and the beloved's answer to him

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۷ - یکی پرسید از عالمی عارفی کی اگر در نماز کسی بگرید به آواز و آه کند و نوحه کند نمازش باطل شود جواب گفت کی نام آن آب دیده است تا آن گرینده چه دیده است اگر شوق خدا دیده است و می‌گرید یا پشیمانی گناهی نمازش تباه نشود بلک کمال گیرد کی لا صلوة الا بحضور القلب و اگر او رنجوری تن یا فراق فرزند دیده است نمازش تباه شود کی اصل نماز ترک تن است و ترک فرزند ابراهیم‌وار کی فرزند را قربان می‌کرد از بهر تکمیل نماز و تن را به آتش نمرود می‌سپرد و امر آمد مصطفی را علیه‌السلام بدین خصال کی فاتبع ملة ابراهیم لقد کانت لکم اسوة حسنة فی‌ابراهیم / Book Five - Section 57 - Someone asked a wise gnostic: 'If one weeps aloud, sighs, and laments during prayer, does their prayer become invalid?' He replied: 'It is called tears (water of the eye) depending on what the weeper has seen. If they have seen the yearning for God and weep, or regret a sin, their prayer is not ruined, but rather attains perfection, for there is no prayer except with the presence of the heart. And if they have seen physical suffering or separation from a child, their prayer is ruined, for the essence of prayer is the abandonment of the body and the abandonment of children in the manner of Abraham, who sacrificed his son for the completion of prayer and surrendered his body to Nimrod's fire; and the command came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, regarding these qualities: Follow the religion of Abraham, and There has certainly been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۸ - مریدی در آمد به خدمت شیخ و ازین شیخ پیر سن نمی‌خواهم بلک پیرعقل و معرفت و اگرچه عیسیست علیه‌السلام در گهواره و یحیی است علیه‌السلام در مکتب کودکان مریدی شیخ را گریان دید او نیز موافقت کرد و گریست چون فارغ شد و به در آمد مریدی دیگر کی از حال شیخ واقف‌تر بود از سر غیرت در عقب او تیز بیرون آمد گفتش ای برادر من ترا گفته باشم الله الله تا نیندیشی و نگویی کی شیخ می‌گریست و من نیز می‌گریستم کی سی سال ریاضت بی‌ریا باید کرد و از عقبات و دریاهای پر نهنگ و کوههای بلند پر شیر و پلنگ می‌باید گذشت تا بدان گریهٔ شیخ رسی یا نرسی اگر رسی شکر زویت لی الارض گویی بسیار / Book Five - Section 58 - A disciple entered into the service of the Sheikh; and by this Sheikh, I do not mean an elder in age, but an elder in intellect and knowledge, even though he be Jesus, peace be upon him, in the cradle, or John, peace be upon him, in the children's school. The disciple saw the Sheikh weeping, so he also conformed and wept. When he finished and came out, another disciple, who was more aware of the Sheikh's state, quickly came out after him out of protective jealousy and said to him, 'O my brother, I tell you, by God, by God, lest you think and say, "The Sheikh was weeping and I was weeping too," for one must practice thirty years of sincere self-discipline, and pass through obstacles, seas full of crocodiles, and high mountains full of lions and leopards, before you can reach the level of that Sheikh's weeping or not. And if you do reach it, you will express immense gratitude to the earth.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۵۹ - داستان آن کنیزک کی با خر خاتون شهوت می‌راند و او را چون بز و خرس آموخته بود شهوت راندن آدمیانه و کدویی در قضیب خر می‌کرد تا از اندازه نگذرد خاتون بر آن وقوف یافت لکن دقیقهٔ کدو را ندید کنیزک را به بهانه به راه کرد جای دور و با خر جمع شد بی‌کدو و هلاک شد به فضیحت کنیزک بیگاه باز آمد و نوحه کرد که ای جانم و ای چشم روشنم کیر دیدی کدو ندیدی ذکر دیدی آن دگر ندیدی کل ناقص ملعون یعنی کل نظر و فهم ناقص ملعون و اگر نه ناقصان ظاهر جسم مرحوم‌اند ملعون نه‌اند بر خوان لیس علی الاعمی حرج نفی حرج کرد و نفی لعنت و نفی عتاب و غضب / Book Five - Section 59 - The story of that maidservant who was satisfying her lust with her mistress's donkey, having trained him like a goat or a bear to copulate in a human manner, and who placed a gourd in the donkey's member so that it would not go beyond the limit. The mistress became aware of this but did not see the subtle trick of the gourd; she sent the maidservant away to a distant place on a pretext and coupled with the donkey without the gourd, and perished in disgrace. The maidservant returned at an untimely hour and lamented: 'O my soul and the light of my eyes, you saw the penis but did not see the gourd; you saw the member but not the other part! Every deficient one is cursed, meaning that every deficient view and understanding is cursed, otherwise those who are outwardly deficient in body are shown mercy and are not cursed; read "No blame lies upon the blind" (Qur'an 48:17), which negated blame, curse, rebuke, and anger.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۶۰ - تمثیل تلقین شیخ مریدان را و پیغامبر امت را کی ایشان طاقت تلقین حق ندارند و با حق‌الف ندارند چنانک طوطی با صورت آدمی الف ندارد کی ازو تلقین تواند گرفت حق تعالی شیخ را چون آیینه‌ای پیش مرید هم‌چو طوطی دارد و از پس آینه تلقین می‌کند لا تحرک به لسانک ان هو الا وحی یوحی اینست ابتدای مسلهٔ بی‌منتهی چنانک منقار جنبانیدن طوطی اندرون آینه کی خیالش می‌خوانی بی‌اختیار و تصرف اوست عکس خواندن طوطی برونی کی متعلمست نه عکس آن معلم کی پس آینه است و لیکن خواندن طوطی برونی تصرف آن معلم است پس این مثال آمد نه مثل / Book Five - Section 60 - The parable of the Sheikh instructing the disciples and the Prophet instructing the community, because they do not have the capacity to receive instruction from God directly, nor do they have familiarity with God, just as a parrot has no familiarity with a human face from which it can receive instruction; the Almighty God places the Sheikh like a mirror before the disciple (who is like a parrot) and instructs from behind the mirror: 'Do not move your tongue therewith' and 'It is naught but a revelation revealed.' This is the beginning of an endless problem, just as the movement of the parrot's beak inside the mirror (which you call its reflection) is without its choice or control, and is the reflection of the reading of the outer parrot who is the learner, not the reflection of that teacher who is behind the mirror, yet the reading of the outer parrot is under the control of that teacher; therefore, this came as an illustration, not a mere comparison.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۶۱ - صاحب‌دلی دید سگ حامله در شکم آن سگ‌بچگان بانگ می‌کردند در تعجب ماند کی حکمت بانگ سگ پاسبانیست بانگ در اندرون شکم مادر پاسبانی نیست و نیز بانگ جهت یاری خواستن و شیر خواستن باشد و غیره و آنجا هیچ این فایده‌ها نیست چون به خویش آمد با حضرت مناجات کرد و ما یعلم تاویله الا الله جواب آمد کی آن صورت حال قومیست از حجاب بیرون نیامده و چشم دل باز ناشده دعوی بصیرت کنند و مقالات گویند از آن نی ایشان را قوتی و یاریی رسد و نه مستمعان را هدایتی و رشدی / Book Five - Section 61 - A man of heart saw a pregnant dog inside whose womb the puppies were barking. He was astonished: the wisdom of a dog's bark is watchfulness, but barking inside the mother's womb is not watchfulness, nor can it be for seeking help or milk, etc., and there are none of those benefits there. When he came to himself, he communed with the Divine Presence, 'And none knows its interpretation except Allah' (Qur'an 3:7). The answer came: 'That is the state of a group who have not emerged from behind the veil, whose heart's eye is not opened, yet they claim insight and deliver discourses, which bring no strength or help to them, nor guidance or growth to their listeners.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۶۲ - قصهٔ اهل ضروان و حسد ایشان بر درویشان کی پدر ما از سلیمی اغلب دخل باغ را به مسکینان می‌داد چون انگور بودی عشر دادی و چون مویز و دوشاب شدی عشر دادی و چون حلوا و پالوده کردی عشر دادی و از قصیل عشر دادی و چون در خرمن می‌کوفتی از کفهٔ آمیخته عشر دادی و چون گندم از کاه جدا شدی عشر دادی و چون آرد کردی عشر دادی و چون خمیر کردی عشر دادی و چون نان کردی عشر دادی لاجرم حق تعالی در آن باغ و کشت برکتی نهاده بود کی همه اصحاب باغ‌ها محتاج او بدندی هم به میوه و هم به سیم و او محتاج هیچ کس نی ازیشان فرزندانشان خرج عشر می‌دیدند منکر و آن برکت را نمی‌دیدند هم‌چون آن زن بدبخت که کدو را ندید و خر را دید / Book Five - Section 62 - The Story of the People of Darwan and Their Envy of the Dervishes: How [Their] Father, Out of Soundness of Heart, Used to Give Most of the Income of the Orchard to the Poor; When There Were Grapes He Gave a Tithe, and When They Became Raisins and Syrup He Gave a Tithe, and When He Made Halva and Paludeh He Gave a Tithe, and From the Green Fodder He Gave a Tithe, and When Threshing on the Floor He Gave a Tithe From the Mixed Heap, and When the Wheat Was Separated From the Chaff He Gave a Tithe, and When He Ground It Into Flour He Gave a Tithe, and When He Kneaded It Into Dough He Gave a Tithe, and When He Baked It Into Bread He Gave a Tithe; Consequently, God Almighty Had Placed Such a Blessing in That Orchard and Crop That All the Owners of the Orchards Stood in Need of Him, Both for Fruit and for Money, While He Was in Need of None of Them; [But] His Children Saw [Only] the Expense of the Tithe, Disbelieving [and Failing to See] That Blessing, Like That Wretched Woman Who Did Not See the Gourd and Saw the Donkey

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۶۳ - بیان آنک عطای حق و قدرت موقوف قابلیت نیست هم‌چون داد خلقان کی آن را قابلیت باید زیرا عطا قدیم است و قابلیت حادث عطا صفت حق است و قابلیت صفت مخلوق و قدیم موقوف حادث نباشد و اگر نه حدوث محال باشد / Book Five - Section 63 - Explanation that the gift and power of God are not dependent on receptivity, unlike the gifts of created beings which require receptivity, because the gift is eternal and receptivity is temporal; the gift is an attribute of God and receptivity is an attribute of the creature, and the eternal is not dependent on the temporal, otherwise the temporal occurrence would be impossible

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۶۶ - قصهٔ قوم یونس علیه‌السلام بیان و برهان آنست کی تضرع و زاری دافع بلای آسمانیست و حق تعالی فاعل مختارست پس تضرع و تعظیم پیش او مفید باشد و فلاسفه گویند فاعل به طبع است و بعلت نه مختار پس تضرع طبع را نگرداند / Book Five - Section 66 - The Story of the People of Jonah, Peace Be Upon Him, Explaining and Proving That Supplication and Lamentation Ward Off Heavenly Affliction, and That God Almighty is a Free Agent, and Thus Supplication and Glorification Before Him Are Beneficial, Whereas Philosophers Say That the Agent Acts by Nature and Cause, Not by Choice, and Therefore Supplication Does Not Alter Nature

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۶۹ - بیان آنک مخلوقی کی ترا ازو ظلمی رسد به حقیقت او هم‌چون آلتیست عارف آن بود کی بحق رجوع کند نه به آلت و اگر به آلت رجوع کند به ظاهر نه از جهل کند بلک برای مصلحتی چنانک ابایزید قدس الله سره گفت کی چندین سالست کی من با مخلوق سخن نگفته‌ام و از مخلوق سخن نشنیده‌ام ولیکن خلق چنین پندارند کی با ایشان سخن می‌گویم و ازیشان می‌شنوم زیرا ایشان مخاطب اکبر را نمی‌بینند کی ایشان چون صدااند او را نسبت به حال من التفات مستمع عاقل به صدا نباشد چنانک مثل است معروف قال الجدار للوتد لم تشقنی قال الوتد انظر الی من یدقنی / Book Five - Section 69 - Explanation that any creature from whom injustice reaches you is in truth like an instrument; the gnostic is one who returns to Truth, not to the instrument, and if he refers to the instrument outwardly, it is not from ignorance but for a wise purpose, as Bayazid (may God sanctify his secret) said, 'For several years I have not spoken to any creature, nor heard from any creature, yet people think I speak with them and hear from them, because they do not see the Greatest Addressee, for they are like an echo; in relation to my state, a rational listener does not pay attention to the echo, as in the well-known proverb: The wall said to the peg, 'Why do you split me?' The peg said, 'Look at the one who strikes me.''

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۰ - جواب آمدن کی آنک نظر او بر اسباب و مرض و زخم تیغ نیاید بر کار تو عزرائیل هم نیاید کی تو هم سببی اگر چه مخفی‌تری از آن سببها و بود کی بر آن رنجور مخفی نباشد کی و هو اقرب الیه منکم و لکن لا تبصرون / Book Five - Section 70 - The coming of the answer: 'To him whose gaze does not fall upon causes, disease, and the wound of the sword, even Azrael has no business with your work, for you too are a cause, though you are more hidden than those causes; and it may be that to that sick person it is not hidden that "And We are closer to him than you, but you do not see."'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۱ - در بیان وخامت چرب و شیرین دنیا و مانع شدن او از طعام الله چنانک فرمود الجوع طعام الله یحیی به ابدان الصدیقین ای فی الجوع طعام الله و قوله ابیت عند ربی یطعمنی و یسقینی و قوله یرزقون فرحین / Book Five - Section 71 - On Explaining the Perniciousness of the Sweet and Fat of the World and Its Preventing (One) from the Food of God, as He Said, 'Hunger is the Food of God Whereby He Revives the Bodies of the Sincere,' i.e. 'In Hunger is the Food of God,' and His Saying, 'I Spend the Night with My Lord; He Feeds Me and Gives Me Drink,' and His Saying, '...Sustained, Rejoicing'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۲ - جواب آن مغفل کی گفته است کی خوش بودی این جهان اگر مرگ نبودی وخوش بودی ملک دنیا اگر زوالش نبودی و علی هذه الوتیرة من الفشارات / Book Five - Section 72 - The answer to that fool who said, 'How pleasant this world would be if there were no death, and how pleasant worldly dominion would be if there were no decline,' and so on in this vein of nonsense

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۳ - فیما یرجی من رحمة الله تعالی معطی النعم قبل استحقاقها و هو الذی ینزل الغیث من بعد ما قنطوا و رب بعد یورث قربا و رب معصیة میمونة و رب سعادة تاتی من حیث یرجی النقم لیعلم ان الله یبدل سیاتهم حسنات / Book Five - Section 73 - On What Is Hoped from the Mercy of God Almighty, the Giver of Blessings Before They Are Deserved; and 'He is the One Who Sends Down Rain After They Have Despaired'; and How Often Distance Inherits Nearness; and How Often a Sin is Auspicious; and How Often Happiness Comes from Where Affliction is Expected, So That It May Be Known That 'God Changes Their Evil Deeds into Good Deeds'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۴ - قصهٔ ایاز و حجره داشتن او جهت چارق و پوستین و گمان آمدن خواجه تاشانش را کی او را در آن حجره دفینه است به سبب محکمی در و گرانی قفل / Book Five - Section 74 - The Story of Ayaz and His Keeping a Private Chamber for His Rustic Shoes and Sheepskin Jacket, and His Fellow Servants Suspecting That He Has a Hidden Treasure in That Chamber Due to the Secure Door and Heavy Lock

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۵ - بیان آنک آنچ بیان کرده می‌شود صورت قصه است وانگه آن صورتیست کی در خورد این صورت گیرانست و درخورد آینهٔ تصویر ایشان و از قدوسیتی کی حقیقت این قصه راست نطق را ازین تنزیل شرم می‌آید و از خجالت سر و ریش و قلم گم می‌کند و العاقل یکفیه الاشاره / Book Five - Section 75 - Explanation that what is being expressed is the form of the story, and furthermore, it is a form suited to these form-perceivers and suited to the mirror of their imagination; and because of the sanctity that the truth of this story possesses, speech is ashamed of this descent, and out of embarrassment, loses its head, beard, and pen; and a hint is sufficient for the wise.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۸ - در معنی این کی ارنا الاشیاء کما هی و معنی این کی لو کشف الغطاء ما از ددت یقینا و قوله در هر که تو از دیدهٔ بد می‌نگری از چنبرهٔ وجود خود می‌نگری پایهٔ کژ کژ افکند سایه / Book Five - Section 78 - On the meaning of 'Show us things as they are' and the meaning of 'If the veil were lifted, my certainty would not increase' and his saying, 'In whomever you look with an evil eye, you are looking from the collar of your own existence; a crooked base throws a crooked shadow'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۷۹ - بیان اتحاد عاشق و معشوق از روی حقیقت اگر چه متضادند از روی آنک نیاز ضد بی‌نیازیست چنان که آینه بی‌صورتست و ساده است و بی‌صورتی ضد صورتست ولکن میان ایشان اتحادیست در حقیقت کی شرح آن درازست و العاقل یکفیه الاشاره / Book Five - Section 79 - Explanation of the Unity of the Lover and the Beloved in Reality, Even Though They Are Contrary in Form; for Need is the Contrary of Needlessness, Just as the Mirror is Formless and Simple, and Formlessness is the Contrary of Form, Yet There is a Unity Between Them in Reality, the Explanation of Which is Long, and 'A Hint is Sufficient for the Wise'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۶۴ - در ابتدای خلقت جسم آدم علیه‌السلام کی جبرئیل علیه‌السلام را اشارت کرد کی برو از زمین مشتی خاک برگیر و به روایتی از هر نواحی مشت مشت بر گیر / Book Five - Section 64 - On the Beginning of the Creation of the Body of Adam, Peace Be Upon Him, When He Commanded Gabriel, Peace Be Upon Him, to Go and Take a Handful of Earth from the Ground, and According to One Narration, to Take a Handful from Every Region

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۸۰ - معشوقی از عاشق پرسید کی خود را دوست‌تر داری یا مرا گفت من از خود مرده‌ام و به تو زنده‌ام از خود و از صفات خود نیست شده‌ام و به تو هست شده‌ام علم خود را فراموش کرده‌ام و از علم تو عالم شده‌ام قدرت خود را از یاد داده‌ام و از قدرت تو قادر شده‌ام اگر خود را دوست دارم ترا دوست داشته باشم و اگر ترا دوست دارم خود را دوست داشته باشم هر که را آینهٔ یقین باشد گرچه خود بین خدای بین باشد اخرج به صفاتی الی خلقی من رآک رآنی و من قصدک قصدنی و علی هذا / Book Five - Section 80 - A beloved asked a lover: 'Do you love yourself more or me?' He said: 'I have died to myself and am alive through you; I have become non-existent to myself and my attributes, and have come to exist through you. I have forgotten my knowledge and have become knowing through your knowledge; I have lost memory of my power and have become powerful through your power. If I love myself, I love you, and if I love you, I love myself. Whoever possesses the mirror of certainty, even if they look at themselves, they see God. Go forth with My attributes to My creation; whoever sees you sees Me, and whoever intends you intends Me,' and so on.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۸۱ - آمدن آن امیر نمام با سرهنگان نیم‌شب بگشادن آن حجرهٔ ایاز و پوستین و چارق دیدن آویخته و گمان بردن کی آن مکرست و روپوش و خانه را حفره کردن بهر گوشه‌ای کی گمان آمد چاه کنان آوردن و دیوارها را سوراخ کردن و چیزی نایافتن و خجل و نومید شدن چنانک بدگمانان و خیال‌اندیشان در کار انبیا و اولیا کی می‌گفتند کی ساحرند و خویشتن ساخته‌اند و تصدر می‌جویند بعد از تفحص خجل شوند و سود ندارد / Book Five - Section 81 - The coming of the talebearing emir with the officers at midnight to open the chamber of Ayaz, and seeing the sheepskin jacket and the rustic shoes hung up, and imagining that it is a trick and a cover, and digging up the house at every corner where suspicion fell, bringing well-diggers and making holes in the walls, finding nothing, and becoming ashamed and hopeless, just as the evil-minded and suspicious-minded who used to say regarding the work of prophets and saints that they are sorcerers and have fabricated it themselves and seek prestige, become ashamed after investigation, and it avails them nothing

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۸۲ - بازگشتن نمامان از حجرهٔ ایاز به سوی شاه توبره تهی و خجل هم‌چون بدگمانان در حق انبیا علیهم‌السلام بر وقت ظهور برائت و پاکی ایشان کی یوم تبیض وجوه و تسود وجوه و قوله تری الذین کذبوا علی الله وجوههم مسودة / Book Five - Section 82 - The Return of the Slanderers from the Chamber of Ayaz to the King, Empty-handed and Ashamed, Like the Ill-minded towards the Prophets (Peace Be Upon Them) at the Time of the Manifestation of Their Innocence and Purity, When 'on the Day when some faces will grow white and some faces will grow black' and His Saying, 'And on the Day of Resurrection you will see those who lied against Allah with their faces blackened'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۸۴ - فرمودن شاه ایاز را کی اختیار کن از عفو و مکافات کی از عدل و لطف هر چه کنی اینجا صوابست و در هر یکی مصلحتهاست کی در عدل هزار لطف هست درج و لکم فی القصاص حیوة آنکس کی کراهت می‌دارد قصاص را درین یک حیات قاتل نظر می‌کند و در صد هزار حیات کی معصوم و محقون خواهند شدن در حصن بیم سیاست نمی‌نگرد / Book Five - Section 84 - The King's commanding Ayaz to choose between forgiveness and retribution, since whether you act out of justice or grace, whatever you do here is right, and in each there are wisdoms; for in justice a thousand graces are contained, and 'there is life for you in retaliation.' He who dislikes retaliation looks only at this single life of the murderer, and does not look at the hundreds of thousands of lives that will become safe and protected within the fortress of fear of punishment.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۸۷ - در بیان کسی کی سخنی گوید کی حال او مناسب آن سخن و آن دعوی نباشد چنان که کفره و لَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ مَنْ خَلَقَ السَّمواتِ وَ الأَرْضَ لَیَقولُنَّ اللهُ خدمت بت سنگین کردن و جان و زر فدای او کردن چه مناسب باشد با جانی کی داند کی خالق سموات و ارض و خلایق الهیست سمیعی بصیری حاضری مراقبی مستولی غیوری الی آخره / Book Five - Section 87 - On the explanation of one who speaks words, but whose state does not correspond to those words and that claim; like the infidels who, though they say 'God created the heavens and the earth,' yet serve a stone idol and sacrifice life and wealth to it, which is entirely inconsistent with a soul that knows the Creator of the heavens and earth is God, All-Hearing, All-Seeing, Present, Watchful, Supreme, and Jealous, etc.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۸۸ - حکایت در بیان توبهٔ نصوح کی چنانک شیر از پستان بیرون آید باز در پستان نرود آنک توبه نصوحی کرد هرگز از آن گناه یاد نکند به طریق رغبت بلک هر دم نفرتش افزون باشد و آن نفرت دلیل آن بود کی لذت قبول یافت آن شهوت اول بی‌لذت شد این به جای آن نشست نبرد عشق را جز عشق دیگر چرا یاری نجویی زو نکوتر وانک دلش باز بدان گناه رغبت می‌کند علامت آنست کی لذت قبول نیافته است و لذت قبول به جای آن لذت گناه ننشسته است سنیسره للیسری نشده است لذت و نیسره للعسری باقیست بر وی / Book Five - Section 88 - The story explaining the repentance of Nasuh: how, just as milk that has come out of the breast does not go back into the breast, he who has repented sincerely never remembers that sin with desire, but rather his aversion to it increases every moment, which is proof that he has tasted the sweetness of acceptance, so that the first lust is emptied of pleasure and this has taken its place—'Nothing expels love except another love; why do you not seek a beloved fairer than Him?'—and if his heart still inclines toward that sin, it is a sign that he has not tasted the sweetness of acceptance, the pleasure of acceptance has not replaced the pleasure of sin, he has not been eased into ease, and easing into hardship remains upon him

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۹۵ - حکایت دیدن خر هیزم‌فروش با نوایی اسپان تازی را بر آخر خاص و تمنا بردن آن دولت را در موعظهٔ آنک تمنا نباید بردن الا مغفرت و عنایت و هدایت کی اگر در صد لون رنجی چون لذت مغفرت بود همه شیرین شود باقی هر دولتی کی آن را ناآزموده تمنی می‌بری با آن رنجی قرینست کی آن را نمی‌بینی چنانک از هر دامی دانه پیدا بود و فخ پنهان تو درین یک دام مانده‌ای تمنی می‌بری کی کاشکی با آن دانه‌ها رفتمی پنداری کی آن دانه‌ها بی‌دامست / Book Five - Section 95 - The story of the woodcutter's donkey seeing the luxury of the Arab horses in the private stable and envying their fortune, in the sermon that one should not wish for anything except forgiveness, favor, and guidance; for if there are a hundred kinds of suffering, when there is the sweetness of forgiveness, they all become sweet, whereas any other fortune that you wish for without having experienced it is accompanied by a pain you do not see, just as the bait is visible in every trap and the snare is hidden—you, trapped in this one snare, wish that you could have gone to those baits, thinking that those baits are without a snare.

He said: 'So that whoever thinks ill of me, I may rip open his belly.' The sodomite was going up and down upon him, saying: 'Praise be to God that I do not think ill of you!' 'My couplet is not a mere couplet, it is a realm; my jest is not a mere jest, it is instruction.' 'Indeed, God is not ashamed to present an example of a mosquito or what is above it' (Qur'an 2:26), meaning 'what is above it' in changing souls through denial: 'What did God intend by this as an example?' And then He answers: 'By it He misleads many, and many He guides' (Qur'an 2:26), for every trial is like a scale; many are made red-faced by it, and many are left disappointed. And if you were to ponder on it a little, you would find many of its noble results.

He replied, 'They are taking donkeys in earnest; discrimination has disappeared today, and I fear they might take me for a donkey.'

Whatever you desire, you shall find, so that the people of the world may be certain that beyond this world there is a World where if you take soil in your palm it becomes gold, the dead enters into it and becomes alive, the Greatest Ill-fate enters it and becomes the Greatest Good-fortune, disbelief enters it and becomes faith, poison enters it and becomes the antidote. It is neither inside this world nor outside this world, neither below nor above, neither connected nor separated; without how or why, every moment thousands of effects and signs appear from it, just as the craft of the hand with the form of the hand, the wink of the eye with the form of the eye, and the eloquence of the tongue with the form of the tongue are neither inside nor outside, neither connected nor separated. And for the wise, a sign is sufficient.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۲۵ - حکایت آن گاو کی تنها در جزیره‌ای‌ست بزرگ، حق تعالی آن جزیرهٔ بزرگ را پر کند از نبات و ریاحین کی علفِ گاو باشد. تا به شب آن گاو همه را بخورَد و فربه شود چون کوه پاره‌ای. چون شب شود خوابش نبرَد از غصه و خوف کی همه صحرا را چریدم فردا چه خورم تا ازین غصه لاغر شود. هم‌چون خلال روز برخیزد همه صحرا را سبزتر و انبوه‌تر بیند از دی؛ باز بخورَد و فربه شود باز شبش همان غم بگیرد سالهاست کی او هم‌چنین می‌بیند و اعتماد نمی‌کند / Book Five - Section 125 - The Story of the Cow that lives alone on a large island; God Almighty fills that large island with plants and sweet herbs to serve as the cow's fodder. Until nightfall, the cow eats it all and becomes as fat as a mountain peak. When night comes, it cannot sleep from grief and fear, thinking 'I have grazed the entire plain, what will I eat tomorrow?' so that from this grief it grows thin. Rising like a splinter at daybreak, it sees the entire plain greener and more abundant than yesterday; again it eats and becomes fat, and again at night the same sorrow overcomes it; for years it has witnessed this and yet does not trust.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۲۶ - صید کردن شیر آن خر را و تشنه شدن شیر از کوشش، رفت به چشمه تا آب خورد تا باز آمدنِ شیر جگربند و دل و گرده را روباه خورده بود کی لطیفترست، شیر طلب کرد دل و جگر نیافت از روبه پرسید کی کو دل و جگر؟ روبه گفت اگر او را دل و جگر بودی آنچنان سیاستی دیده بود آن روز و به هزار حیله جان برده؛ کی برِ تو باز آمدی؟ لوکنا نسمع او نعقل ماکنا فی اصحاب السعیر / Book Five - Section 126 - The Lion hunting that donkey, the lion becoming thirsty from the struggle and going to the spring to drink water; before the lion returned, the fox had eaten the liver, heart, and kidneys which are more delicate. The lion sought the heart and liver and did not find them, and asked the fox: 'Where are the heart and liver?' The fox said: 'If he had a heart or liver, after seeing such punishment that day and escaping with a thousand tricks, would he have returned to you? Had we but listened or used our reason, we should not have been among the dwellers of the Blazing Fire.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۳۰ - جواب گفتن مؤمن سُنّی، کافر جبری را و در اثبات اختیار بنده دلیل گفتن سنّت راهی باشد کوفتهٔ اقدام انبیا علیهم‌السلام بر یمین آن راه بیابان جبر کی خود را اختیار نبیند و امر و نهی را منکر شود و تاویل کند و از منکر شدن امر و نهی لازم آید انکار بهشت کی جزای مطیعان امرست و دوزخ جزای مخالفان امر و دیگر نگویم به چه انجامد کی العاقل تکفیه الاشاره و بر یسار آن راه بیابان قدرست کی قدرت خالق را مغلوب قدرت خلق داند و از آن آن فسادها زاید کی آن مغ جبری بر می‌شمرد / Book Five - Section 130 - The Sunni believer's answer to the deterministic infidel, and adducing arguments in proof of the free will of man. The Sunnah is a path beaten by the steps of the prophets, peace be upon them. On the right of that path is the wilderness of determinism (jabr), where one does not see free will in oneself and denies and misinterprets commands and prohibitions; from the denial of commands and prohibitions, the denial of Paradise (the reward of the obedient) and Hell (the punishment of the disobedient) necessarily follows, and I shall not say where else this leads, for a hint is sufficient for the wise. On the left of that path is the wilderness of absolute free will (qadar), where one deems the power of the Creator vanquished by the power of the creature, and from this arise those corruptions which that deterministic Zoroastrian enumerates.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۳۱ - درک وجدانی چون اختیار و اضطرار و خشم و اصطبار و سیری و ناهار به جای حس است کی زرد از سرخ بداند و فرق کند و خرد از بزرگ و طلخ از شیرین و مشک از سرگین و درشت از نرم به حس مس و گرم از سرد و سوزان از شیر گرم و تر از خشک و مس دیوار از مس درخت پس منکر وجدانی منکر حس باشد و زیاده که وجدانی از حس ظاهرترست زیرا حس را توان بستن و منع کردن از احساس و بستن راه و مدخل وجدانیات را ممکن نیست و العاقل تکفیه الاشارة / Book Five - Section 131 - Intuitive perception, such as free will, compulsion, anger, patience, satiety, and hunger, is in place of physical sensation, which distinguishes yellow from red, small from large, bitter from sweet, musk from dung, coarse from soft by touch, hot from cold, burning from lukewarm, wet from dry, and the copper of a wall from the copper of a tree. Thus, the denier of intuitive perception is a denier of physical sensation, and even more so, because intuitive perception is more manifest than physical sensation, for physical sensation can be closed and prevented from perceiving, while blocking the path and entrance of intuitive perceptions is impossible; and 'a hint is sufficient for the wise'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۳۴ - معنی ما شاء الله کان یعنی خواست خواست او و رضا رضای او جویید از خشم دیگران و رد دیگران دلتنگ مباشید آن کان اگر چه لفظ ماضیست لیکن در فعل خدا ماضی و مستقبل نباشد کی لیس عند الله صباح و لا مساء / Book Five - Section 134 - The meaning of 'Whatever God wills happens' is that His will is absolute, and you should seek His satisfaction and not be saddened by the anger or rejection of others; and that 'kana' (happened), though a past tense verb, does not imply past or future in God's action, for 'With God there is neither morning nor evening'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۳۵ - و هم‌چنین قد جف القلم یعنی جف القلم و کتب لا یستوی الطاعة والمعصیة لا یستوی الامانة و السرقة جف القلم ان لا یستوی الشکر و الکفران جف القلم ان الله لا یضیع اجر المحسنین / Book Five - Section 135 - And likewise 'the Pen has dried' means the Pen has dried and written that obedience and disobedience are not equal, trustworthiness and theft are not equal, the Pen has dried that gratitude and ingratitude are not equal, the Pen has dried that indeed God does not waste the reward of the doers of good

They Said to Him, 'These Are Not Amirs, These Are the Slaves of the Amid of Khorasan.' He Turned His Face to Heaven, Saying, 'O God, Learn How to Care for Slaves from the Amid!' (There They Call the Chancellor 'Amid')

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۳۷ - باز جواب گفتن آن کافر جبری آن سنی را کی باسلامش دعوت می‌کرد و به ترک اعتقاد جبرش دعوت می‌کرد و دراز شدن مناظره از طرفین کی مادهٔ اشکال و جواب را نبرد الا عشق حقیقی کی او را پروای آن نماند و ذلک فضل الله یتیه من یشاء / Book Five - Section 137 - The deterministic infidel again answering the Sunni who was inviting him to Islam and to abandon his belief in determinism; and the elongation of the debate from both sides, because nothing can eliminate the source of objection and answer except real Love, which has no concern for such matters, 'and that is the grace of Allah which He bestows upon whom He wills.'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۴۴ - حکایت آن زن کی گفت شوهر را کی گوشت را گربه خورد شوهر گربه را به ترازو بر کشید گربه نیم من برآمد گفت ای زن گوشت نیم من بود و افزون اگر این گوشتست گربه کو و اگر این گربه است گوشت کو / Book Five - Section 144 - The story of that woman who said to her husband that the cat ate the meat; the husband weighed the cat on the scale, the cat came out as half a 'man', and he said: 'O wife, the meat was half a 'man' and more; if this is the meat, where is the cat? And if this is the cat, where is the meat?'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۴۵ - حکایت آن امیر کی غلام را گفت کی می بیار غلام رفت و سبوی می آورد در راه زاهدی بود امر معروف کرد زد سنگی و سبو را بشکست امیر بشنید و قصد گوشمال زاهد کرد و این قصد در عهد دین عیسی بود علیه‌السلام کی هنوز می حرام نشده بود ولیکن زاهد تقزیزی می‌کرد و از تنعم منع می‌کرد / Book Five - Section 145 - The Story of That Emir Who Told His Servant to Bring Wine; the Servant Went and Was Bringing a Jug of Wine. On the Way, There Was an Ascetic Who Commanded What Is Right, Threw a Stone and Broke the Jug. The Emir Heard and Intended to Chastise the Ascetic. This Intended Act Was in the Era of the Religion of Jesus, Peace Be Upon Him, When Wine Was Not Yet Forbidden, but the Ascetic Rebuked and Forbade Indulgence in Pleasures

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۴۶ - حکایت ضیاء دلق کی سخت دراز بود و برادرش شیخ اسلام تاج بلخ به غایت کوتاه بالا بود و این شیخ اسلام از برادرش ضیا ننگ داشتی ضیا در آمد به درس او و همه صدور بلخ حاضر به درس او ضیا خدمتی کرد و بگذشت شیخ اسلام او را نیم قیامی کرد سرسری گفت آری سخت درازی پاره‌ای در دزد / Book Five - Section 146 - The story of Ziya-ye Dalq who was very tall, and his brother, the Sheykh of Islam Taj of Balkh, who was extremely short of stature, and this Sheykh of Islam was ashamed of his brother Ziya; Ziya entered his lecture while all the leaders of Balkh were present at his lecture, Ziya paid his respects and passed by, the Sheykh of Islam gave him a half-standing salutation and said cursorily, 'Yes, you are very tall, tuck in some of it (hide a part of your height)'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۵۳ - تفسیر این آیت که وَ إِنَّ الدّارَ الآخِرةَ لَهیَ الحَیَوانُ لَوْ کانوا یَعْلَمونَ کی در و دیوار و عرصهٔ آن عالم و آب و کوزه و میوه و درخت همه زنده‌اند و سخن‌گوی و سخن‌شنو و جهت آن فرمود مصطفی علیه السلام کی الدُّنیا جیفةٌ وَ طُلّابُها کلابٌ و اگر آخرت را حیات نبودی آخرت هم جیفه بودی جیفه را برای مردگیش جیفه گویند نه برای بوی زشت و فرخجی / Book Five - Section 153 - Commentary on the Verse: 'And the Home of the Hereafter—That Is the Life, if They But Knew,' how the doors, walls, and landscape of that world, and the water, jug, fruit, and trees are all alive, speaking, and hearing; and regarding why Mustafa, peace be upon him, said: 'The world is a carcass and its seekers are dogs'; and if the Hereafter had no life, it too would be a carcass, since a carcass is called a carcass because of its deadness, not because of its foul smell and corruption.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۵۴ - دگربار استدعاء شاه از ایاز کی تاویل کار خود بگو و مشکل منکران را و طاعنان را حل کن کی ایشان را در آن التباس رها کردن مروت نیست / Book Five - Section 154 - The King's requesting Ayaz once again to explain the interpretation of his action and to solve the difficulty of the deniers and mockers, for it is not chivalrous to leave them in that confusion

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۶۰ - وصف ضعیف دلی و سستی صوفی سایه پرورد مجاهده ناکرده درد و داغ عشق ناچشیده به سجده و دست‌بوس عام و به حرمت نظر کردن و بانگشت نمودن ایشان کی امروز در زمانه صوفی اوست غره شده و بوهم بیمار شده هم‌چون آن معلم کی کودکان گفتند کی رنجوری و با این وهم کی من مجاهدم مرا درین ره پهلوان می‌دانند با غازیان به غزا رفته کی به ظاهر نیز هنر بنمایم در جهاد اکبر مستثناام جهاد اصغر خود پیش من چه محل دارد خیال شیر دیده و دلیریها کرده و مست این دلیری شده و روی به بیشه نهاده به قصد شیر و شیر به زبان حال گفته کی کلا سوف تعلمون ثم کلا سوف تعلمون / Book Five - Section 160 - Description of the faint-heartedness and weakness of the shadow-nourished Sufi who has not undergone spiritual struggle (mujahada), has not tasted the pain and brand of love, has been deceived by the prostrations and hand-kissing of the common people and by their looking at him with reverence and pointing at him with their fingers saying 'today he is the Sufi of the age', and who has become sick by imagination, like that schoolteacher whom the children told 'you are ill'; and who, with the illusion 'I am a holy warrior, they consider me a champion in this path,' has gone with the warriors to battle to show his prowess outwardly too, (thinking) 'I am an exception in the greater warfare (jihad), what value can the lesser warfare have before me?'; having seen the phantom of a lion, imagined deeds of bravery, and become intoxicated by this courage, he has set out towards the forest to hunt the lion, while the lion, in the language of its state, says: 'Nay, soon you shall know! Then, nay, soon you shall know!'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۶۱ - نصیحت مبارزان او را کی با این دل و زهره کی تو داری کی از کلابیسه شدن چشم کافر اسیری دست بسته بیهوش شوی و دشنه از دست بیفتد زنهار زنهار ملازم مطبخ خانقاه باش و سوی پیکار مرو تا رسوا نشوی / Book Five - Section 161 - The warriors' advice to him: 'With such a heart and courage as you possess, where you fainted and let the dagger fall from your hand just from the rolling of a bound captive infidel's eye, beware, beware! Remain a servant of the kitchen of the convent and do not go to battle, lest you be disgraced'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۶۲ - حکایت عیاضی رحمه‌الله کی هفتاد غزو کرده بود سینه برهنه بر امید شهید شدن چون از آن نومید شد از جهاد اصغر رو به جهاد اکبر آورد و خلوت گزید ناگهان طبل غازیان شنید نفس از اندرون زنجیر می‌درانید سوی غزا و متهم داشتن او نفس خود را درین رغبت / Book Five - Section 162 - The Story of ‘Ayāḍī, may God have mercy on him, who fought seventy battles bare-chested in the hope of becoming a martyr; when he was disappointed in that, he turned from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad and chose solitude; suddenly he heard the drum of the warriors, and his soul (nafs) from within began tearing its chains toward the battle, and his accusing/suspecting his soul in this desire

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۶۳ - حکایت آن مجاهد کی از همیان سیم هر روز یک درم در خندق انداختی به تفاریق از بهر ستیزهٔ حرص و آرزوی نفس و وسوسهٔ نفس کی چون می‌اندازی به خندق باری به یک‌بار بینداز تا خلاص یابم کی الیاس احدی الراحتین او گفته کی این راحت نیز ندهم / Book Five - Section 163 - The Story of That Holy Warrior Who Would Throw One Silver Dirham from His Purse into the Moat Every Day Gradually, to Defy the Greed, Desire, and Whispering of His Soul (Nafs) Which Said, 'Since You Are Throwing It into the Moat, Throw It All at Once So That I May Be Free,' to Which He Replied, 'Despair is One of the Two Reliefs,' and Said, 'I Will Not Grant Even This Relief'

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۶۴ - صفت کردن مرد غماز و نمودن صورت کنیزک مصور در کاغذ و عاشق شدن خلیفهٔ مصر بر آن صورت و فرستادن خلیفه امیری را با سپاه گران بدر موصل و قتل و ویرانی بسیار کردن بهر این غرض / Book Five - Section 164 - How the informer described, and showed on paper the portrait of, the painted handmaiden; and how the Caliph of Egypt fell in love with that portrait and sent a commander with a mighty army to the gate of Mosul, causing great slaughter and devastation for this purpose

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۷۱ - عزم کردن شاه چون واقف شد بر آن خیانت کی بپوشاند و عفو کند و او را به او دهد و دانست کی آن فتنه جزای او بود و قصد او بود و ظلم او بر صاحب موصل کی و من اساء فعلیها و ان ربک لبالمرصاد و ترسیدن کی اگر انتقام کشد آن انتقام هم بر سر او آید چنانک این ظلم و طمع بر سرش آمد / Book Five - Section 171 - The King's resolving, when he became aware of that treachery, to cover it up, forgive it, and bestow her upon him, knowing that this tribulation was the retribution for his own actions, his own intent, and his own injustice against the ruler of Mosul, for 'whoso doeth evil, it is against his own soul' and 'verily thy Lord is on the watchtower'; and his fearing that if he took vengeance, that vengeance would likewise fall upon him, just as this injustice and greed had recoiled upon his own head.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۷۲ - بیان آنک نَحْنُ قَسَمْنا کی یکی را شهوت و قوت خران دهد و یکی را کیاست و قوت انبیا و فرشتگان بخشد سر ز هوا تافتن از سروریست ترک هوا قوت پیغامبریست تخمهایی کی شهوتی نبود بر آن جز قیامتی نبود / Book Five - Section 172 - Explanation of 'We have distributed' (Quran 43:32), that He gives to one the lust and strength of donkeys, and to another He grants the wisdom and strength of prophets and angels; turning away from passion is sovereignty, renouncing passion is the strength of prophets; the seeds that are not of lust have no harvest except the Resurrection

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۷۴ - رسیدن گوهر از دست به دست آخر دور به ایاز و کیاست ایاز و مقلد ناشدن او ایشان را و مغرور ناشدن او به گال و مال دادن شاه و خلعتها و جامگیها افزون کردن و مدح عقل مخطان کردن به مکر و امتحان که کی روا باشد مقلد را مسلمان داشتن مسلمان باشد اما نادر باشد کی مقلد ازین امتحانها به سلامت بیرون آید کی ثبات بینایان ندارد الا من عصم الله زیرا حق یکیست و آن را ضد بسیار غلط‌افکن و مشابه حق مقلد چون آن ضد را نشناسد از آن رو حق را نشناخته باشد اما حق با آن ناشناخت او چو او را به عنایت نگاه دارد آن ناشناخت او را زیان ندارد / Book Five - Section 174 - The pearl passing from hand to hand until the turn finally reaches Ayaz, the sagacity of Ayaz and his not becoming an imitator of them, his not being deceived by the king's gifts of livestock and wealth, and the king's increasing his robes of honor and stipends; and the praise of the intellect of those who err, done through trickery and testing; and when it is proper to consider an imitator a Muslim: he is a Muslim, but it is rare that an imitator emerges safely from these tests, since he does not possess the steadfastness of the seeing ones, except those whom God protects; because Truth is one, and its counterfeits are many and misleading, resembling the truth; since the imitator does not recognize that counterfeit, he has not recognized the Truth from that direction, but if Truth, despite his non-recognition, preserves him with grace, his non-recognition will not harm him.

دفتر پنجم - بخش ۱۷۸ - مجرم دانستن ایاز خود را درین شفاعت‌گری و عذر این جرم خواستن و در آن عذرگویی خود را مجرم دانستن و این شکستگی از شناخت و عظمت شاه خیزد کی أَنا أَعْلَمُکُمْ بِاللَّهِ وَ أَخْشیکُمْ لِللَّهِ وَ قالَ اللهُ تَعالی إِنَّما یَخْشَی اللهَ مِنْ عِبادِهِ العُلَماءُ / Book Five - Section 178 - Ayaz Deeming Himself Guilty in This Intercession, Seeking Forgiveness for This Offense, and Considering Himself a Sinner in That Very Apologizing; and This Humility Arises from Recognizing the Majesty of the King, as in 'I am the most knowing of you regarding Allah and the most fearful of you before Him,' and God Almighty's Saying, 'Indeed, only those of His servants who have knowledge fear Allah'
