آن یکی می رفت بالای درخت
می فشاند آن میوه را دزدانه سخت

صاحب باغ آمد و گفت ای دنی
از خدا شرمیت کو چه می کنی

گفت از باغ خدا بنده خدا
گر خورد خرما که حق کردش عطا

عامیانه چه ملامت می کنی
بخل بر خوان خداوند غنی

گفت ای ایبک بیاور آن رسن
تا بگویم من جواب بوالحسن

پس ببستش سخت آن دم بر درخت
می زد او بر پشت و ساقش چوب سخت

گفت آخر از خدا شرمی بدار
می کشی این بی گنه را زار زار

گفت از چوب خدا این بنده اش
می زند بر پشت دیگر بنده خوش

چوب حق و پشت و پهلو آن او
من غلام و آلت فرمان او

گفت توبه کردم از جبر ای عیار
اختیارست اختیارست اختیار

اختیارات اختیارش هست کرد
اختیارش چون سواری زیر گرد

اختیارش اختیار ما کند
امر شد بر اختیاری مستند

حاکمی بر صورت بی اختیار
هست هر مخلوق را در اقتدار

تا کشد بی اختیاری صید را
تا برد بگرفته گوش او زید را

لیک بی هیچ آلتی صنع صمد
اختیارش را کمند او کند

اختیارش زید را قیدش کند
بی سگ و بی دام حق صیدش کند

آن دروگر حاکم چوبی بود
وآن مصور حاکم خوبی بود

هست آهنگر بر آهن قیمی
هست بنا هم بر آلت حاکمی

نادر این باشد که چندین اختیار
ساجد اندر اختیارش بنده وار

قدرت تو بر جمادات از نبرد
کی جمادی را از آنها نفی کرد

قدرتش بر اختیارات آنچنان
نفی نکند اختیاری را از آن

خواستش می گوی بر وجه کمال
که نباشد نسبت جبر و ضلال

چونک گفتی کفر من خواست ویست
خواست خود را نیز هم می دان که هست

زانک بی خواه تو خود کفر تو نیست
کفر بی خواهش تناقض گفتنیست

امر عاجز را قبیحست و ذمیم
خشم بتر خاصه از رب رحیم

گاو گر یوغی نگیرد می زنند
هیچ گاوی که نپرد شد نژند

گاو چون معذور نبود در فضول
صاحب گاو از چه معذورست و دول

چون نه ای رنجور سر را بر مبند
اختیارت هست بر سبلت مخند

جهد کن کز جام حق یابی نوی
بی خود و بی اختیار آنگه شوی

آنگه آن می را بود کل اختیار
تو شوی معذور مطلق مست وار

هرچه گویی گفته می باشد آن
هر چه روبی رفته می باشد آن

کی کند آن مست جز عدل و صواب
که ز جام حق کشیدست او شراب

جادوان فرعون را گفتند بیست
مست را پروای دست و پای نیست

دست و پای ما می آن واحدست
دست ظاهر سایه است و کاسدست

English translation

A certain man was climbing up a tree, Shaking down the fruit very hard in a thief-like manner. The owner of the orchard came and said: 'O vile wretch! Where is your shame before God? What are you doing?' He said: 'From the orchard of God, a servant of God Is eating the dates that God has bestowed upon him. Why do you blame him in such a vulgar manner, Showing stinginess at the table of the Rich Lord?' The owner said: 'O Aybak, bring that rope, So that I may give my reply to Abu'l-Hasan.' Then he bound him tightly at that moment to the tree, And began beating his back and legs hard with a stick. The thief cried: 'In the end, have some shame before God! You are killing this innocent man miserably!' He replied: 'With God's stick, this servant of His Is beating the back of another servant of His quite happily! The stick is God's, and the back and ribs are His; I am but a slave and an instrument of His command.' He said: 'I repent of determinism, O clever one! It is free will, free will, free will! His free will created our free wills; His free will is like a rider hidden under dust. His free will makes our free will; The divine command is directed at one who possesses free will.' Every creature has the power To rule over a form that lacks free will, So that the involuntary one may draw the prey, Or Zayd may be led by the ear. But without any instrument, the work of the Eternal Makes his free will a lasso for him, His free will fetters Zayd; Without dog or snare, God makes him His prey. The carpenter is the ruler over the wood; The painter is the ruler over beauty. The blacksmith is the master over the iron; The builder is also the ruler over the tool. It is a wonder that so many free wills Should prostrate like slaves before His free will. Has your power over inanimate things through struggle Ever negated their inanimate nature? In the same way, His power over our free wills Does not negate free will from them. Speak of His will in the sense of perfection, So that there may be no imputation of determinism and straying. When you say: 'My unbelief is His will,' Know that your own will is also there, Because without your will, your unbelief cannot exist; Unbelief without will is a contradiction in terms. To command one who is helpless is ugly and blameworthy; Anger is worse, especially from the Merciful Lord. If an ox does not take the yoke, they beat it; But has any ox ever been beaten for not flying? Since the ox is not excused for being unruly, How could the owner of the ox be excused or stupid? Since you are not sick, do not bind up your head; You have free will, do not laugh at your own mustache. Strive to find renewal from the cup of God; Then you will become self-transcended and free of personal choice. Then that Wine will have total choice, And you will be absolutely excused like a drunken man. Whatever you speak will be what is spoken (by Him); Whatever you sweep away will be swept away (by Him). How should that drunken one act other than with justice and rectitude, Since he has drunk wine from the cup of God? The magicians said to Pharaoh: 'Hold on! A drunken man has no care for hands and feet. Our hands and feet are the wine of that Unique One; The outward hand is but a shadow and is worthless.'
