English translation

God the Exalted said: 'Who believe in the Unseen, and perform prayer.' And the Prophet, peace be upon him, said at his deathbed: 'And what your right hands possess.' And the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: 'Three things from your world have been made beloved to me: perfume, women, and the comfort of my eyes in prayer.' And he, peace be upon him, said: 'Whoever abandons prayer intentionally has disbelieved, and between Islam and disbelief is the abandonment of prayer.' And he said: 'The one who prays is intimately conversing with his Lord.' And he, peace be upon him, said: 'If the one who prays knew with whom he is intimately conversing, he would not turn away.' And he, peace be upon him, said: 'Be humble in your prayer.' And he, peace be upon him, said: 'Prayer is the light of the believer; whoever establishes prayer is given Paradise through prayer.'

Until the servant emerges from ritual impurity, The veil of the honor of prayer shall not be opened. Since the key to prayer is your purity, Know that its lock is your flawed state. How can you set foot upon the roof of heaven? How can you drink wine from the cup of angels, As long as, like a donkey in this ruined abode, Your belly is filled with bread and your back is loaded with water? As long as you are under the sway of the four, the five, and the six, You will drink no wine except from the cask of desire. How will God accept you with grace, Or willingly accept your prayer, When the command of your Lord made secondary Four takbirs over your three pillars? The loincloth-weavers of the world of pre-eternity Will recite subtle points and ghazals for you. How will you see the face of the King of the Divine Law, While you see your existence in water and in the sky? Both your morsel and your robe must be pure, Otherwise you will perish amidst the dust. When you do not have pure food and clothing, What is your prayer but a handful of dust? Do not stand for prayer with arrogance; Have shame and fear God. Whoever is not turned toward himself, God gives him audience in prayer. A dog sweeps its own spot with its tail, and yet You do not sweep the place of prayer with a sigh! For the sake of the glory and service of God, Keep your place, garment, and soul clean. The Qibla of the soul is the threshold of the Eternal Lord; The unity of the chest is the Kaaba of the One God. At Uhud, risk your life like Hamza, So that you may find sweetness in the call to prayer. Burn and plunder whatever is other than God; Purify yourself from whatever is other than religion. If you come with neediness, they will accept you with grace; Without neediness, they will not accept your prayer. Without neediness, if you worry about prayer, You eat onion stew made of your own liver. But if there is neediness along with prayer, The hand of grace will pull back the veil of mystery. Whoever hastened to the court of grace Gave what was to be given, and found what was to be sought. Otherwise, Satan, from within the prayer, Will grab your ear and pull you out again. You are base, while prayer is noble; You are created in time, while prayer is eternal. Know that seventeen rak'ahs of prayer from the heart and soul Are the kingdom of the eighteen thousand worlds. So do not say this calculation is too precise, For seventeen is close to eighteen. Whoever performs seventeen rak'ahs, Possesses the kingdom of the eighteen thousand. By God, will envy, anger, avarice, lust, and greed Ever let you perform your prayer? Until you cast envy out of your heart, You will not be delivered from its evil deeds. When it does not see your spiritual gain, Your prayer will not determine your value either. When your value turns its reins away, By God, not even Gabriel can reach it. The seeker first begins with ritual bathing, For God does not accept prayer from one in a state of ritual impurity. As long as you have deceit and malice inside you, How can you be considered as having performed ritual bathing? Without washing away blameworthy traits, The Great Lord will not accept your prayer. Though whatever belongs to you may be clean, In the presence of God, it is all ritual impurity for you. The root and branch of prayer are ritual bathing and ablution; The cure of a difficult disease is through medicine. Until you sweep the path with the broom of 'la', You will not arrive at the palace of 'illa Allah'. When the heart rouses you away from your self, Then prayer will arise from neediness. Prayer will not grant passage to God When you have not performed purification with neediness. Weeping and selflessness are your purification; Killing your ego is your expiation. When you have slain your ego on the path, The grace of God will swiftly show its face. Come with neediness so you may find admittance, Otherwise, you will quickly receive a threefold divorce. For that prayer which is performed in the Divine Presence Is far from the mere wetness of water on the face. When the body goes into the dust and the soul to the heavens, See your spirit in prayer like an angel.
