بخش ۴۲ - فی‌الرائحة الکریهة علی غیبة اخ المسلم / Section 42 - On the Foul Odor of Backbiting a Muslim Brother

گفت روزی مرید خود را پیر
که ز غیبت مکن تو چهره چو قیر

کاجکی معصیت بدادی گند
تا که مغتاب را شدی چون بند

هیچ جمعی به غیبه ننشستی
هرکسی مهر غیبه نشکستی

ور نشستی ز رایحات کریه
گنده گشتی میان جمع و سفیه

زان خجالت دگر به غیبت کس
نزدی نزد خلق هیچ نفس

هست غیبت بسان لحم اخیه
نخورد لحم اخ مرد وجیه

به جز از ابله و ضریر و سفیه
ننماید شره به لحم اخیه

ای برادر حذر کن از غیبت
از یقین ساز توشه نز ریبت

نخورد لحم اخ گه گفتار
جز که مردار خوار چون کفتار

گفت کم کن سبک به کار درآی
چون درایست خیره یافه سرای

نه ز لاتامنوا سپر بفگن
نه ز لاتقنطوا قفص بشکن

همچو مردان درآی در تگ و پوی
تختهٔ گفت زاب روی بشوی

علم لشکر جفا بفگن
قلم نقشبند تن بشکن

نکند صبر نفس تو ناپاک
کاب او آتش است و بادش خاک

که سپید و سیاه دفتر جاه
دیده دارد سپید و نامه سیاه

در گفتار بیهده در بند
به قضای خدای شو خرسند

چون نگویی سپیدنامه شوی
رستی از رنج و خویش کامه شوی

ور بگویی بمانی اندر رنج
بشنو این پند و خیره باد مسنج

شیر گردن سطبر از آن دارد
که رسولی به خرس نگذارد

رهیی در ره رهایی باش
از خودی دور شو خدایی باش

چه شوی چون ستور و دیو و دده
چار میخ اندرین گدای کده

نیست در وی ز معنی آلت و ساز
همه خامست و گندگی چو پیاز

گرنه ای چرخ بر گذشتن چیست
گرد این خاک توده گشتن چیست

در هوس عالمی نبینی سود
از هوا زنده ای بمیری زود

کار کن کار بگذر از گفتار
کاندرین راه کار دارد کار

گفت کم کن که من چه خواهم کرد
گوی کردم مگو که خواهم کرد

English translation

One day an elder said to his disciple, 'Do not make your face black as pitch through backbiting. Would that sin gave off a stench, so that it would act as a fetter upon the backbiter. Then no group would sit down to backbite, no one would break the seal of backbiting. And if they sat, from the foul odors, they would become putrid and disgraced among the gathering. Out of that shame, no one would ever breathe a word of backbiting to others. Backbiting is like the flesh of one's brother; a respectable man does not eat his brother's flesh. Except for the fool, the blind, and the ignorant, no one shows gluttony for their brother's flesh. O brother, beware of backbiting; make your provision from certainty, not from doubt. No one eats their brother's flesh during speech, except for a carrion-eater like a hyena. Speak less and quickly get to work; like a bell, the idle talker babbles in vain. Neither drop your shield because of Do not feel secure, nor break the cage because of Do not despair. Step into the struggle like true men; wash the tablet of speech with the water of honor. Throw down the banner of the army of cruelty; break the pen of the body's painter. Your impure soul does not exercise patience; for its water is fire, and its wind is dust. For the white and black of the ledger of pride, has made the eyes white and the record black. Close the door on vain speech; be content with the decree of God. When you speak not, your record becomes pure; you escape from suffering and attain your desire. And if you speak, you remain in suffering; hear this advice and do not vainly weigh the wind. The lion has a thick neck because he does not send a bear as his messenger. Be a servant on the path of liberation; distance yourself from selfhood and be godly. Why become like beasts, demons, and predators, crucified in this beggar's den? There is no tool or instrument of true meaning in it; it is all raw and stinking like an onion. If you are not the wheeling sky, what is this passing by? What is this circling around this heap of dust? In a world of desire you will see no profit; you are alive by lust, you will die soon. Work, work, move past mere speech; for on this path, work is what matters. Speak less of What shall I do?; say I have done, do not say I will do.'
